saw people on YT, TWT, Reddit, etc talk about the new era of fantasy anime...with "Frieren" and "Dungeon Meshi" as pioneers...with Witch Hat Atelier as the next to complete the BIG 3 OF MODERN FANTASY...

why do you think these animes are making a wave in fantasy genre in anime industry ?
what do they do they uniquely ?

is it the world building ? characters that seem lot less cringey ? what do you think ?

Personally I don't really care about those particular shows. Not my cup of tea.

Or maybe they only seem like a new kind of fantasy because the idea of a fantasy setting without anyone from our world being reincarnated/summoned/transported to it has become so rare.

Everything that connects to MAL

Contains Ecchi, but not Tagged Ecchi: Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3

As someone who hasn't watched many fantasy anime made before Frieren and Dungeon Meshi, I was also somewhat confused by this "new era" narrative.

They're great shows, but aren't these what great fantasy shows are supposed to be like? They don't seem that original or revolutionary, just well-written and well-produced in the traditional sense.

What were "great fantasy shows" exactly like, back in the day? I would like to know what's so unusual about these new shows.

Mmmm I think because it refreshes the formula of fantasy adventure shows per se. The industry had been goin on a streak of always mixing fantasy adventure WITH isekai. Ill be honest some are ok but like after a while its literally just a rinse and repeat story telling. For me Frieren and Dungeon Meshi took me completly by storm because of how it sets up the world and the characters. They feel natural, intresting, engaging and have depth into the lore; world or character. Not some random overpowered dude/dudette that just spawned into this world with a party just causing mayham.
I guess this new type of fantasy anime are an eyecatcher for me because they have some pseudo slice of life into them. At times they dont feel that far fetch; again the key here is the characters in how they are set up.
Surprisingly I guess thats why Spice and Wolf has been and will always be such a good show as well (for me). It has this type of fantasy story telling going on but at the same time feels grounded. :D

I am of the opinion that we didn't have great fantasy shows back in the day. So if the new shows are as great as you say, that alone will be enough to make them stand out.

I recall watching a video similar to that talking point. I don't know if that will be the trend but I would welcome it mainly because I would like to shift away from "isekai" fantasies at this point. But to the point of the discussion, I don't think it's anything related to something that's unique. More so it's different than what we've been getting for more than a decade--at least it feels like that.

They might be popular, but the most unique of these shows is actually Dungeon Meshi. I wouldn't call either of 'em, except Dungeon Meshi, "a new kind of fantasy anime". New wave - sure. But it's not like we've entered an age of unseen before types of fantasy anime being released in huge numbers.

I'm like a fine wine connoisseur in a world of trendy cocktails.
I say Let the youngsters enjoy their modern fantasy renaissance while I kick back with the good ol’ stuff that never goes out of style.
After all, nothing beats a shounen showdown, thrilling youkai ayakashi, mystery-solving comedy or a intense sports anime to get my adrenaline pumping.
You youngsters keep watching what you want, and I will let the fantasy fans have their moment.

I can't say much about Witch Hat Atelier, but it honestly looks much more like traditional fantasy than the seemingly Dungeons & Dragons inspired fantasy that is Frieren or Dungeon Meshi.

There always has been high fantasy that's not purely focused on action.
I would much rather see more of things like The Ancient Magus' Bride, Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina or Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms.

It is a mix of things for sure - beautiful production both in animation, directing and OST, interesting world building that expands, characters seem more grounded for me, same with character designs. Less high stakes, high action - more focused on the journey than the climax of it?

I don't know If I would call this new era yet, still new wave of non-isekai fantasy is always welcome. [and I say this as I like both isekai and fantasy], I certaintly wait for next seasons for Frieren and Dungeon Meshi - same for Witch Hat Atelier [didn't read it, the guy is pretty XD]

The big 3 fantasy anime of the 2020s are all unique for different reasons:

- Frieren: the core concept is unique (what happens beyond the journey's end after defeating the demon lord, reminiscing about the past), but everything else is pretty standard (I mean worldbuilding and every character besides Frieren). The issue with Frieren is that the more it goes on, the more it will focus on the "everything else" and the less on its core concept; that's why some people think it would have been better off as a short story (the first few episodes).
- Dungeon Meshi: worldbuilding (the dungeon and its wildlife). 11/10, nothing to add.
- Witch Hat Atelier Ishuzoku Reviewers: worldbuilding (the different species of human-like creatures and how they interact between each other). 11/10, nothing to add.
