The manga wasn't even close to finished when the 2003 series was made, so the show took its own course partway through. The 2009 series is adapting the manga almost all the way through.

The 2003 anime decided to not follow the manga after the set up. I wouldn’t call the rest filler either as it wasn’t there to wait for the manga. I actually prefer this version. It is an anime original as far as I am concerned

because the original got too far ahead of the manga and after a certain time it started spinning on it's own, so they made Brotherhood. More Manga faithful.

The problem is that Brotherhood ended up being better because of the ending. Original anime had a terrible ending, but following the manga more closely made Brotherhood better.

Guys, I think the question is about the studios. You're all giving reasons for the re-adaptation, but I'm pretty sure the question is about why Bones did Brotherhood, as well.

And to be honest, I don't know.

But what we see often when a work needs a second adaptation is that the first anime was in some way so bad that whatever team is producing the show doesn't trust the same studio with a second adaptation. And I think this just doesn't apply to Fullmetal Alchemist. Arakawa, the original creator, was heavily involved in the first anime's production and didn't mind the anime going in a different direction. And considering that the original plot they wrote isn't half bad, Bones was still the go-to studio for the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise.

Another reason I could think of is that Bones was still heavily involved with the Fullmetal Alchemist brand, since the 2003 anime was only a few years old when the production of Brotherhood would have started.

Hope I could help :)

It's very simple

FMA Manga was released in 2001, and the first adaptation of FMA was released in 2003, so they didn't have material to adapt the serie. And they decided to do an original story different to the manga

After that, in 2009 Brotherhood was released and it adapts the entire manga and they finished almost at the same time.

So, if you want to watch 2003 too, do it, it's so different to Brotherhood, but Brotherhood is the best one

I disagree.

And Brotherhood has a garbage start and garbage pacing and that spoils the whole supposedly superior experience.

I like and prefer the darker story of 2003.

The studio decided to make an Anime adaptation to a manga that wasn’t even finished in 2003. They had most of the stuff of the beginning of the manga but when they were approaching to the Climax they started making made up stuff to the Anime and it wasn’t close to what the Mangaka had in mind. A few years after the Manga was released, the same studio read the manga and thought that they can make an alternate version but this time having the proper ending that the Manga had. So in conclusion, they wanted to make an Anime adaptation for an anime that was in development at the same time they wanted to make it and a few years after the manga they decided to have the proper story.

I guess it was because Bones did an extremely amazing job with how they did FMA 03, even with the original content. While the original content of 03 parted ways with the manga, it was actually a much welcome development because the content of FMA 03 adheres very strictly to the primary concept of alchemy: equivalent exchange. FMA 03 bound the characters to this extremely dark and heavy concept, which made it much more interesting than how FMAB is. Also, people complaining about the ending of FMA 03 seemed to conveniently forget that it is the cruelest twist of fate, Ed being able to bring Alphonse back to life only to get separated , as fitting for the dark and heavy theme brought by the Law of Equivalent Exchange.

The 2003 version deviated from the manga as it wasn’t close to finishing so seeing this, Bones( the studio behind the show) decided to make their own story. Where as Brotherhood pretty much sticks to everything in the manga.

Because the original series didn't follow the manga. FMAB did and was so much better .
