Uuum I'm not really sure? The characters are definitely important to me. I get very attached and involved with characters I like. But that doesn't really mean I'll enjoy the anime or give it a good score? Or vice versa. Like I liked the characters in Black Cat, I did not like Black Cat (which I rated a 6). And I liked Death Parade (which I rated a 10), but I'm more attached to Train and co. from Black Cat than I'm attached to Decim and the others. I usually enjoy action and shounen a lot, but I'm not sure what's most important for it to be enjoyed, if that makes sense? I think it's kind of loose.
If that doesn't make sense that's understandable because I had to retype that a few times in attempts to get my thoughts out and I'm not sure how successful I was with that lol.
Haha, i see.. Nah, ofc i understand about the things that you mentioned given i also felt the same with some certain anime series, so i guess it's pretty relatable as well XD XD Anyway, now for the contrary, what type of anime do you tend to avoid at all cost? and do you have any anime that you like but fall under the category of genre that you tend to dislike (for e.g i like code geass but in general i'm not a fan of mecha) :P

So you started Monogatari, better prepare for a ton of questions by the crazy fanboys that are @PhKay and I. I'm not kidding, we cannot restrain ourselves :P

What do you think of the artstyle?

Oh I don't mind!! This place is seriously one of my favorite ways to pass time so I enjoy question spamming lol

It's gorgeous, definitely. When I first heard about, before I initially decided it probably wasn't for me, it's art and animation was one of the things that got me interested.

yay you started Monogatari! ^^ That happened much quicker than i expected haha
@sytemet is right so be prepared for the questions :D

But first, what did you think of Koe no Katachi? :p I´m pretty hyped for it and haven´t found it in great quality yet -.-

Me too honestly, but I thought that if I didn't know what to watch anyways I should probably watch Monogatari lol

It was really everything I was hoping for lol. It was actually the very first manga I even started before I even knew what manga actually was (I was only like 11? 12?). I didn't finish it because I didn't know how to read manga at the time but when I started seeing gifs of the pv on tumblr I was like.. this looks oddly familiar. I was really shocked when I read the synopsis because that's when it clicked that I'd read some of this before.

So I'd been waiting for this since like, the first pv came out and it really delivered. It was severely stressful, for a boat load of reasons, but in a good way? Koe no Katachi was really packed with emotional intensity, beautiful animation, and thoughtful directing and it was a pleasant watch despite the anxiety lol. I'm going to personally send a thank you letter to KyoAni.

And a little spoiler so don't read unless you've watched it by now

Uh, my imagination I guess? I used to have really lucid dreams that I'd be able to control and plan out and sleeping was pretty much my favorite activity because I loved my self-made movies so much. I had multiple long running stories that I'd add on to every night. I just lost that over time. My creativity isn't as flexible as it used to be, I guess. Now I don't remember most of my dreams and the ones I do are your usual weird, nonsensical dream stuff.

I think that's all

I'm glad, I was wondering if that was weird or not lol. Uh I think the only kind of anime I try to avoid at all costs are hardcore ecchi harems. I don't have any interest in watching any of the recent magical school pseudo harem light novel adaptations either.
Otherwise I'm pretty lenient, it doesn't really matter what kind of show it is as long as something about it catches my attention.
Well I don't really like harem set ups, because large love triangles irritate me, but I'll always really love Ouran High School Host Club a lot. I think one of the reasons that didn't bother me in Ouran is because only two of the dudes actually had a crush on the protagonist and it's mostly downplayed in comparison to the comedy aspect in the show. So I'm not sure if that counts. I also liked The Seven Deadly Sins despite not being an ecchi fan, I don't think it was amazing but it was endearing enough that I'd like to continue it. I don't love mecha either, but I think I'd enjoy Code Geass too.

Maybe not all of them but I think I would delete a lot.

I like Lavi for a bunch of reasons. :> One being, I just really like his character design. I like his eyepatch and headband and earrings (I also like redheads which is a contributing factor). What I like about him personality wise is the fact even though he's introduced as a doofy comedic relief character, he's actually very serious and cautious. He plays dumb to come off as unintimidating and only in backflashes and internal monologue do you get a gist for his general distaste for humanity. He said himself that it's only been recently he's been faking happiness less and less (while being with Allen and co.) but that means he totally was faking it when he was first introduced and he faked it pretty well. I also like that the viewer doesn't get too many details on him or his childhood. All the other main cast characters get full episodes on their childhood, featuring how they got to where they are, their families, and where they lived. With Lavi you only get an episode or two set not too long before he met Allen and the others. You know that Lenalee is Chinese, Kanda is Japanese, Allen is British, but nobody except maybe Bookman even knows where Lavi came from. Lavi isn't even his real name, it's just an alias he started using semi recently as well. It just adds some depth to his emotionally repressed, closed off personality and I appreciate it. He's slowly letting go of that though, as his bonds with his friends become stronger and he realizes he genuinely likes these people and they like him too, it creates room for growth as well as interesting character traits. Basically, Lavi is a weird riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

... I miss dgm now but dgm stresses me out so I'm not sure what to do with these feelings lol

I'm honestly not too sure? I haven't watched a lot. It's more like I have a collection of ones I enjoyed and others I enjoyed less and I'm not sure of the exact ranking of any of them.
For now I guess I'd say Doukyuusei, Princess Mononoke, and Kimi no Na wa OR Koe no Katachi but I can't decide at the moment

I did like it actually, I plan on continuing it (although I'm not totally sure of when.) I like the relationship between Araragi and Senjougahara, I think they actually have good chemistry and a few of their conversations made me laugh. I like his friendship with Kanbaru too, after all of that mess passed. Them just going out together and eating lunch is something I find sweet for some reason. The show does a good job on selling the viewer the characters and the relationships between them.

I also like the different openings for each arc and how they hinted at things relevant to the characters and the story. Like I only realized Kanbaru was jumping across lilies (yuri) after she said she was a lesbian (yuri) it was clever lol. The flashes of words that I'm assuming are from the novels set the tone for the episodes really well too, it creates an ominous feeling that suits the series well. It definitely delivered on the visual storytelling, which is something I'm a fan of.

I still don't like harems much, and I would have enjoyed a little more if the president and Araragi were really just friends. Partially because I just don't like love triangles but also because I think every girl falling for the same dude, no matter how charming, is unrealistic. I also wish they'd leave the grade school and middle school girls out of the ecchi/harem parts of the show but overall it was played off well. It's classy for a fanservice show.

So yeah I'll continue it. I can see how/why it became a lot of people's favorite franchise.

It's okay, not really recommended though. It's just your regular pretty boy anime. That's kind of the only thing it's got going for it. If you like the pretty boys and think they're cute you'll probably think the anime is cute but otherwise it's nothing special at all.

Puchkov said:

I'd say the anime I've rated 8-10 or even my favorite characters speaks more about my personality than my entire completed list. There are more than a few things on my completed list that I do not want associated with me in any way at all whatsoever. Like even if we're taking scores into account I don't think Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu (which I watched and finished for some reason?) says anything true about my personality. On the other hand, me liking Darker Than Black and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid probably says something true about it.

I have neglected my promise to shower you in Monogatari questions (it's been busy irl) but let's try to continue for a while. I remember jokes and/or implications of adult-child relationships being a major red flag for you so how much did Hachikuji's and Nadeko's arcs frustrate you? (you already mentioned them, but I'd like to hear a bit more:P)

Yeah it happens. It certainly is a major red flag, but I guess it didn't bother me as much compared to other shows? I think it helps that I know the Araragi has a girlfriend that he loves and is not actually into little girls. The fanservice is more directed to the audience. Which is still gross to me since they're minors but at least I don't harbor any negative feelings towards Araragi for it. Hachikuji's wasn't that bad though, aside from the occasional groping. Nadeko made me more uncomfortable, but still wasn't as bad as it possibly could have been since I still like the writing and each arc only lasts a few episodes anyways.

Hey Hey what do you say! It´s NOT survey time just yet! lol
Happy New Week and Welcome to the Qualifier for the World Survey Championships!

If you want to take part, please post a Toplist of your favorite foreign (=non japanese...half-japanese is fine) anime characters until the 10th of August, 7pm CET! Only characters from actually existing countries count so please do not use characters from fantasy nations! Also, your list has to include characters from at least three different countries regardless of how long it is!
Please just ignore this post if you do not want to take part!

You can create anything between a Top 3 and a Top 10 list. The longer your list is, the more points are awarded to the countries. (for example, If you do a Top 5, the character in 1st place will receive 5pts, 2nd place 4pts and so on...If you do Top 10, 1st place receives 10pts, 2nd place 9pts and so on...) Each character collects points for his country, the Top 7 countries will qualify for the World Survey Championships which will be part of the 3rd Survey Season!

The new survey season starts on August 14th! If you are interested, here are the rules for the WSC and the full survey season. There is no need to read it to participate though ^^

I am aware that HSTs are no longer a thing, but since mine was one of the few that didn't get shut down I thought I'd cheat a little and answer my last few questions while I still could. I know it's been forever since I actually participated here, but you guys are awesome and I'm gonna miss this <3

PhKay said:

I think I already answered something similar to this, and that answer was I'd like to be the colorist? Or whatever that job's called. Other than that though I'd also like to try being a voice actor. I'm not sure I'd be any good, but I'd definitely be interested in trying it

sytemet said:
Can you talk a bit about what makes Ouran such a great anime?

Well, I like the protagonist, for one thing. Haruhi is relatable and funny to me. She's very real, and the show never puts her on an unrealistic pedastal. For example, that episode when the Lobelia girls steal Haruhi to put her in their play. There's this moment where the boys are spying on her through a little window. She turns dramatically in their direction. In any other anime there'd be that shoujo sparkle, she'd be beautiful, and it'd be magical and romantic and all the boys would fall for her. But actually when she turns she has too much makeup on and she looks weird. Also it turns out it wasn't her singing, but a disc playing in the background because she has such an awful singing voice. Also, my favorite quote from her is "I hate these damn rich people." That is my kinda girl.

I like the other boys as well. My favorites being the twins because they are horrible and I hate them. I think they're funny in general, but also I thinks it's funny that they bring out the worst in each other. If you get them alone they're much more quiet. Kaoru is actually almost a pleasant person when he's not around Hikaru. That is hilarious.

Likable characters are important to me in any show I watch, and I like Ouran characters a lot, basically. It has a lot of heart and it has good, original humor. It's not perfect and I do not recommend it if twincest jokes make you uncomfortable, something I accidentally went through firsthand when I tried to make my sister watch it with me (her opinion on anime dropped a bit,) but I love it

I honestly am not certain how to answer this. I don't really admire anything about him. He's not exactly a good role model. His intelligence is noteworthy but he mostly uses his smarts be manipulative or deceitful. I find him very fascinating though. I could write a full essay on his character and why he's one of my favorites, but I definitely wouldn't praise him or any of his actions.

To be brief, why he's on my favorites despite the fact I do not think highly of him, is very simply because I like jerks (not unlike why I like the twins from Ouran). I don't know why but I think they're the funniest thing ever. I have never seen another character more spiteful or vindictive. I also emphathize with depressed, self-deprecating, lonely, gay teens. So there's that too.

Thank you for participating in hot seat threads :3
