Shōnen (少年 ), shonen, or shounen, is a kango word literally meaning few years and generally referring to a typical boy, from elementary school through high school age. It is used in everyday conversation when referring to the period of youth, including in legal wording referencing youth, without regard to gender.

It means young boy and it just refers to animes/mangas targetted towards that age demographic.

senien = young adult to older males
Josei = young adult to older females
Shojo= elementary school to high school age girls.

They are demographics

But I don't get what you are trying to say, is it because Tokyo ESP is a shounen then the lead should be a boy/male?

If so then there are plenty shounen out there with female lead, Claymore, Blood Plus and Soul Eater just to name a few.

BTW Tokyo Ghoul is published by a Seinen magazine meaning it is aimed at an older audience than shounen is.

It's kodomomuke.
Isayama Hajime should be awarded The Manga with The Highest Inconsistencies of Characters' Appearances.
He keeps performing multiple plastic surgeries on those Shingeki No Kyojin characters in a SINGLE chapter.
Yes, I've read up to the latest chapter of Shingeki No Kyojin manga.
Forced myself to read through the kidsketching chapters after the anime's ended. At least from now on, I only have to go through the hell once a month.
Patiently awaiting SNK TV/movie/OVA anime-sequel.
The 2015 SNK live-action movie would probably suck.
