| THree factors: The intensity of the plot. Unless you've read the manga, you really don't know what's going to happen next. Lust being completely smoked by Mustang fairly early, Ling becoming Greed- these moments are just absolutely insane. The breadth of the universe. In the first anime, there's Resembol, Central, Ishbal and a few other villages that they visit, but aside from Lior, Youswell, and Rush Valley (all of which came from the manga) there's not much of an identity established for them. In Brotherhood, it's not just Resembol/Central/Ishbal for the major storylines, but also Fort Briggs, Xing, and at least references to places like Drachma and Xerxes, and each of them really give the feeling of a fully "lived in" universe. The breadth of character development. In the first series, it was pretty much Al, Ed, Mustang, and some Scar. Here it's everyone- not just those four, but also Bradley, Winry, Hawkeye, the characters from Xing, Armstrong, who all really get some major development. Sorry for the long answer!
