Digimon. Depending on whom you say that to, the word either conjures up amusing memories of a passing fad of the 1990’s or heartfelt passion about a misunderstood property, deeper and richer than most people gave it credit for. Most of those memories are tied to the Digimon Adventure anime of 1999, a series that is still highly regarded by its fans around the globe. It’s so highly regarded that this May, the series is set to receive a museum exhibit. From May 3rd to May 14th 2017, Tokyo’s Laforet Harajuku will be hosting Digimon Adventure: The Real World.

Digimon Adventure

For those not familiar with the Laforet Harajuku, it’s an extremely popular and well known mall that features a pretty wide showcase of fashion and fashion accessories. It’s also noteworthy for having an entire 6th floor that serves as an exhibition hall, known as the Laforet Museum Harajuku. It’s previously served as the host to exhibits from Disney/Pixar, director David Lynch, various photographers and artists, and the band KISS with crossover art featuring Astro Boy.

The Digimon Adventure exhibit will feature replicas of locations from the anime, allowing for guests to experience the Digiworld in a real life form. More details are forthcoming but both advance and same day ticket buyers are entitled to commemorative wristbands and medallions for an additional price, according to the official site. Ticket prices will range from 1,300 to 3,300 yen ($12.00 - $30.00) depending on age and the previously mentioned merchandise, with advance tickets being 300 yen cheaper.

Even if you can’t be in Tokyo to see the exhibit for yourself, Digimon fans should be happy to hear that their beloved franchise is being honored in such a unique way. In the United States, Digimon Adventure found itself in an unwarranted competition with Pokemon, despite being two radically different series. Though it received an occasionally frustrating translation and dub from Saban Entertainment, it was still many young kid’s introduction to evolving anime story lines and character arcs.
