Well-Developed Female Characters and Relationships
Information
Since watching NANA, I/we haven't been able to get into any other anime.
Why?
Well, it could be that in a lot of anime, the female characters are more well developed in the physical endowment area (Ahem...boobies) than in the emotional or conceptual area. Not to mention that their relationships are often just as underdeveloped and the exist pretty much to be the love/lust interest of other characters.
There is definitely anime out there that doesn't fall into the above category. So let's support it! I'm talking NANA, Azumanga Daioh, Claymore, Kino's Journey, and so many more!

When a club has two itineraries on its agenda, but only one bucket to dump it all in, how can we help our clubbers to rummage what they want? The bucket might well become a trashcan and you gotta be a ragpicker going through all of what we've dunked in there till you find something of interest.
SO... we decided to give you a little treasure map! All the series and Characters we add, we'll be updating them here in this list but under sorted heads, along with a one-liner description on why we thought we should feature it in our club. So if you want a series with one category, but not the other, rather than looking at the general list, you can take a peek at this cheat sheet!
This list will keep updating as and when we get time, but do let us know what you think should be included and why. We'll take a sneak peek, maybe lick it, or gobble it up into this list!
Dun dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnn.....!!!!
Series with Well Developed Relationshipsdoki doki aaaaah!!!! so much happening! how we move each other so...Anime:
Eikoku koi Monogatari: Emma
Emma x William (class and status hierarchies really push buttons)
Hachimitsu to Clover
Yamada x Mayama (the sting of unrequited love);
Takemoto x Hagu x Morita x Hanamoto (little pushes make shifts)
Kara no Kyoukai
Although it contains an overarching romance plot, this isn't a romance story.
However, it's noteworthy that the romantic relationship is a very unusual one. The typical gender roles are nearly reversed. Still, don't watch this because of romance!
NANA
Nana x Hachi (how strangers end up taking all attention);
Hachi x Nobu (so many desires that couldn't be channelled)
Nodame Cantabile
Nodame x Chiaki (quirks affecting the stable)
Manga:
Bambi to Dhole
Yukimi/Bambi x Nagasawa (so much to carry on little shoulders)
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
Miyazawa x Arima (the farce quickly drops and the deepest parts of the heart are affected)
Series with Well Developed Female CharactersThem ladies to look up to or be whipped by! Or simply learn from...Anime:
Blood+ = Saya
taking up the sword implies many responsibilities and consequences
Claymore = Clare
Clare is an exceptionally strong character (personality wise as well as physically) with a detailed, troubled past. There's also character development.
Eikoku koi Monogatari: Emma = Emma
she had to make very big choices/decisions in her life due to her situation that really put her in the middle of bourgeoisie system. Where her colleagues would step down, she steps in and chooses not to be ignorant or avoidant.
Golden Time = Kouko
irritating at first, and perhaps not so lovable, but you really respect her when she gives her all to keep her sanity when all she invested in starts crumbling
Kara no Kyoukai series = Shiki; Touko
2 very capable women.
This series (almost) lacks any double standards.
Shiki is an especially interesting character.
While the whole show is heavy on mystery, the biggest mystery is Shiki herself.
Juuni Kokuki = Nakajima, Youko
Epic scale fantasy with a well written female MC who's character grows a lot, so much that it's a central theme. Empowering with an especially strong female.
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou = Miyazawa
Kemono no Souja Erin = Erin
Coming of age story and more with a detailed, very well written, very strong-willed female MC. There are very well done time jumps and you get to witness a lot of character development as she becomes an adult.
This is NOT (just) a children's story. It's probably not even suited for really young teens.
Oniisama e...
Not just one but multiple very complex female characters dealing with really heavy themes.
Psycho-Pass = Tsunemori Akane
her objectivity is her boon, but when morality and emotions are thrown at you, how do you take decisions that would keep you going, that too in the midst of a whole country's politics and governance?
Seirei no Moribito = Yonsa, Balsa
Balsa is probably the most capable warrior (swordswoman) in the whole story. She is a complex character who's not just physically strong and capable, but has a lot of compassion too. She doesn't lose anything of her femininity, despite being badass.
Skip Beat! = Mogami, Kyouko
A very strong-willed female MC with a charming and quite unique personality. She is very determined to reach her goals and goes through quite some character development.
Manga:
Akatsuki no Yona = Princess Yona
damn gurl, look at what you've become from a spoilt ignorant brat! This is what you call 'experience'.
@granuli
boogers bogglers!
nice discovery!
but after making the thread, I did feel we were repeating the older thread you'd started asking for additions, and when it's on the club page, you have the advantage of skimming the list, and then clicking on the html link already in the Relations list of the club. Easier for them lazies, makes things simpler too, plus invites people to peek in and hopefully join the club. :)
>>call to all admins! Please help edit the cheat sheet, add your own titles and pairings, descriptions can be added as and when our muse tickles... Let's update this bukkatsu!
@Kundalini
Thank you for doing all this!
I agree, the features are seriously lacking.
Group messaging and some other features would be really helpful!
Great job and writing BTW :)
I'll try to contribute too asap.
Edit:
Are you sure that we can't edit each others posts? That would mean an exception for admin-created threads.
I just discovered the sticky feature ;) it's not very visible by any means... you have to (full) edit your post and then under Additional Options/"importance" you can change from type "post" to "sticky".
Really, they could have added those options to the create new thread dialog.
Ahhh..
I realise the stupidity of creating a thread for such a main list. Only I'd be able to edit it. And it also can't be sticky, and it also acts almost as a repeat to the other thread asking for additions.
Putting it in the main page now.
