TenkaiTenkai, the Buddhist monk who was employing Gessai, is the one from whom he got this outlook. A devout believer in the Shogunate, Tenkai's philosophy is all about eliminating troublesome elements that could threaten the peace, no matter how sneaky or underhanded he has to get. For this he used Gessai and his pupils.As soon as Gessai wasn't needed anymore, Tenkai left him to die. It's implied that he allied with the Tokugawa Shogunate and had something to do with the assassins sent after Azumi following the Shogunate's consolidation of power.
