This post describes my theoretical analysis about the MyAnimeList rating system: how it was intended to be and how it actually is used. From the design it is technically sane and sensible, from the user perspective something different:

  • 0: This one is actually called 'Select score' and is the default setting. It can mean 2 things for the typical MAL user:
    a) not done watching, will rate later
    or
    b) don't care about ratings, leave me alone (n/a)

  • 1-3: are called 'unwatchabele', 'horrible' and 'very bad'. They are also never used, except maybe 1, but the people using this option probably would call it -1 'kill everyone involved in making this' or something similar. Additionally most users read the review before watching an anime, so they don't really come across this awful stuff, if it even exists.

  • 4: This is were the scale begins for most users. Officially it is called 'bad'. A more accurate term would be 'dropped, hate it'. It's most commonly used for boring animes and really unwatchable stuff.

  • 5: 'Average'. More precisely 'watched it, because I was bored, but did not like it' option. This is useful for animes that are just annoying, but the watcher was so bored, that he/she still watched it. The never ending animes, that began good and turn to fillers fit in this category too.

  • 6: 'Fine'. Translated to MAL standard, it should be called 'below average, but OK for one time watching'. This is the one you will actually start to encounter once in a while.

  • 7: 'Good'. This could be called 'average'. Mostly used for stuff OK for watching once.

  • 8: 'Very Good'. The 'slightly above average'. Basically the same as 'average' and it depends on the users current mood to set it.

  • 9: 'Great'. First of the two mostly used options. Actually means 'good' and sometimes even 'I might consider rewaching it'

  • 10: 'Masterpeace'. Second of the most used options. I means something between 'was quite OK and I will probably even rewach it' to 'this was totally epic and why is 10 the highest option' Actually I just read in an episode thread today, that someone wanted to rate it 11: 'epic' and complained that it was not an option.

Now here is the end of the scale. To resemble the typical MAL user, there should be 3 additional options besides the -1: 11: 'epic, totally loved it', 42: 'the answer to life, the universe and everything' and last but not least 'over 9000'.

Disclaimer: This is meant as a joke. I purely pulled it out of my (well, you know where), so there is no reason to kill me for it. ~ sayonara

15 Rules.
I was doing a bit of fooling around with some philosophical aspects of life. Here are 15 preliminary roles I assembled, which are meant to inspire. Still, they should not be taken too seriously.

  1. Life isn't fair, but then again, a fair isn't life. Learn to play the game and preferably win it. Don't listen to anyone who want's to enforce rules on you. There are more then enough and most are stupid, but learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
  2. Work at something you enjoy and that's worthy of your time and talent. Form your own opinions and make your own decisions. Be bold and courageous because when you look back on your life, you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the ones you did.
  3. Don't be an indecisive. Take a step back and analyze your technique, then make a decision. Don't hesitate too much.
  4. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
  5. Never stop learning, for when that happens you can be declared dead.
  6. Fight not to win the battle but to win the war. Learn to pick your battles; Ask yourself, "Will this matter one year from now? How about one month? One week? One day?"
  7. Don't try to create and analyze at the same time. They're different processes.
  8. No matter how far down the wrong road you’ve traveled, once you realize it switch to a better lane. Sunk cost principle.
  9. Don’t nag, complain, or whine. No one wants to hear it, and it makes you look like a miserable person. Negative energy is contagious; bad people and bad events always follow. It also won't help you to resolve the thing you complain.
  10. Be like water, flowing effortlessly through your environment. A weak person is easily affected by the daily problems of life. Instead of fighting things that are sure to come up, adapt to them and solve them rationally. Things won’t always go your way.
  11. Have no expectations. When you enter situations with expectations, you limit your behavior and thinking. Having an idealized outcome in your mind beforehand closes yourself off to new experiences.
  12. Enjoy the overcoming of obstacles as learning experiences. Do not expect your plans to be fulfilled easily. If they are easily fulfilled, you will be prone to arrogance.
  13. Look to those who disagree with you so that you may learn from them and become wise. Do not expect others to always agree with you. If they do, you will always think that you are always right.
  14. The enemy of 'good' is 'better', so whatever you do, make it better than the last one.
  15. If you come across a sheep in wolf's clothing, be very afraid, for that is one psychotic sheep.
