Anime Relations: Sword Art Online II
Today, I decided on a whim to record the anime that I followed and dropped for each season and say a little bit about them.

*This is only a rough sketch. It will be updated when this season ends.

*To spice things up a bit, I will put a final prediction for each anime's rank on MAL after the season official end. I will make this prediction right now (at week 6). We'll see how well I do. A correction prediction made after week 6 will be punished for 10% one extra week after week 6.

- Watching -

Akame ga Kill!
#200(week 6)
Amagi Brilliant Park
#900(week 6)
Fate/Stay Night: UBW
#20(week 6)
Grisaria no Kajitsu
#1800(week 6)
Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
#190(week 6); #100(week 8)
Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
#1400(week 6)
Psycho-Pass 2
#350(week 6)
Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis
#400(week 6)
Sword Art Online II
#700(week 6)

- Dropped -

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo
#5000
Reason for drop: New Directors + Fan-service show + expectation of not serious plot + yuri = just a show to train new director, and not for serious audience like me

Nanatsu no Taizai
#600
Reason for drop: I might* have like this kind of shounen shows five years ago.

Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu.
#4000
Reason for drop: Appeals to a certain part of male demographics, I am sure.

Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete
#5500
Reason for drop: Shitty production value + out-of-rhythm pacing + Typical non-adjusted visual novel plot = maybe appeals only to the source material fan-base.

Anime Relations: Clannad
Today, as of May 8, 2014, I decided to conduct a practical investigation in comparing new anime's scores with the global scores. There are going to be a lot of estimations here and there, but for the most part the method and data should be believable.

I have selected all the TV anime series aired after January, 1, 2013, and passed the minimum required votes (50) to have a Bayesian score. I used the anime search function, using "aired after 2013" and "TV series" as filters, and copied each page of anime information into excel. Somehow, despite the messy formatting, I was able to retrieve all the anime scores. There are 247 titles in total (again, I might have missed a few). The average score is 7.19.

Now, we can compare this to the global score for TV series, which is kind of a "calculated guessing" process, lol. Again, I resort to the anime search function with "TV series" as a filter. Obviously, it's impractical to calculate the average by copying each page (20 entries per page) into excel again, since there are a total of 2356 TV series entries with scores. This is easily found by sorting by "score", and then use bisection method to find where the total entries. By assuming that TV series have a normal distribution in score, I plan to estimate the average by taking the middle, and see how it deviates on both sides.

The 1178th entry has a score of 7.18. 75-percentile entry is 6.74 (0.44 from average), and 25-percentile is 7.61 (0.43 from average). It seems that it deviates evenly in both sides. Now, obviously I don't know any easy way of collecting the score for 2356 entries (I have to copy more than 100+ pages into excel), and I am too lazy to select a big enough random sample from the series to construct a sample deviation (yes, all for the sake of standard deviation). [Actually, technically it is possible. Just use any internet random number generator between 1 and 2356 and do it 50 times. Then, find those entries' scores. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow.

Anyways, sufficient to say, coincidence or not, the median of scores of all TV series (7.18) (of an assumed normal distribution; which is supposed to be equal to the average) is very close that of the new anime (7.19) aired after January 2013.

Based on the sketchy results from this investigation, MAL community as a whole does not overrate new anime. To be honest, I am relieved. While it is true that newer anime on a whole have more pleasing graphics, the "average quality", if you will, remains the same as it always has been.

To a certain extent yes, since I have a bad habit of not wanting to watch anime that I didn't enjoy.

Here is a list of my completed anime of which I did not watch every episode.

- - - ANIME - - -

Ga-rei: zero - Despite the exhilarating 2nd half, the first half is really really slow-paced. I didn't watch 4 episodes.

Hyouka - skipped/skimmed a few episodes in the latter half

Mirai Nikki (Future Dairy) - I didn't enjoy it to the fullest because I was already spoiled by reading the manga a couple of years ago. Admittedly I skipped and skimmed some episodes in between.

A certain magical Index I & II and Railgun I & II(2nd arc) - skimmed through several parts of the anime of Index, especially in the second season. Skimmed through episodes in Railgun first season.

To Love-Ru - Skimmed through the boring, fillerish episodes.

Death Note - I didn't watch episode 26 - 36.

Air - skimmed over some episodes.

K-ON! and K-ON!! - too little plot twist that I skimmed through both anime. I only stayed for the music performance part.

Suzumiya Haruhi (2009) - I congratulate you if you finished the entire endless 8 arc.

Suisei no Gargantia - the first half (minus eps 1) is boring as hell, and I did not miss anything important by skipping.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo - I did not enjoy this anime as much as others did what's with its over-the-top and silly comedy, trying to blend it to drama. I skipped a few episodes in the ending to watch the conclusion.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - most of the second half is too wtf to me, and I skimmed through most of them.

Deadman Wonderland - skim

Btooom! - nothing new in the anime. Not as good as manga. I skipped half the anime to watch where the conclusion left us.

Ergo Proxy - I had to skim through some of the heavy dimentia scenes. I don't like those particularly.

Mashiroiro Symphony - Bad galgame adaptation. I skipped or not pay attention most of the time.

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic - skimmed around the episodes.

Zero no Tsukaima - skimmed around the third and fourth season.

The TV series marked as "childhood memories" - I watched them as they were aired in China when I was a child. I am not sure how many episodes I catched out of the entire series, but I am confident that I watched at least more than half of them because I did understand the entire story.

- - - MANGA - - -

Special A - I can't remember if I skipped some 20 chapters or not, but it was pretty repetitive in the middle.

Holyland - After I put it on-hold for a long time and come back to it I don't get the same thrills anymore. I skipped the last 20- 30 chapters to read the conclusion.

20th century Boys - a decent manga all in all but perhaps too lacking in the "modern shounen-ness" for me to read everything carefully. It's not enjoyable to read the MCs suffer, in the entire fucking manga. So yes I skipped perhaps 10 chapters but not a lot.

Suzuka - yes it gets boring in the middle.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle - If I read this slowly I might not skip.

As a clear evidence, even the entry title is in style with the trademark Light-novelish titles that have sentences starting with "I".

Serious, a lot of anime, as seen in my anime relations for this blog entry.

Verdict? Most of them are not bad (7 or above), with the exception of Kyoukai no Kanata, Princess Lover, and Nozoki Ana.

KnK is a innovative attempt by Kyouto Animation at supernatural shows that fail at a lot of things. Princess Lover was only picked up because I wanted to have a better understanding of its hentai OVA (a goal that I did not achieve), and Nozoki Ana covers a part of the manga with no endings whatsoever and is not needed.

Anyways, starting tomorrow I will read more manga to regain the balance that I seek between the two.
