Bakemonogatari: Characterization Through Aberrations
Anime Relations: Bakemonogatari
Thanks for reading my article!
This article was written as a part of a high school project. As a graduation requirement, we are required to take a class revolving around an independent project. This project could be anything we wanted to do. So, being the otaku I am, I decided to do a project on anime. I brainstormed possible projects (making an AMV, manga translation, learning how to draw, etc) but ultimately I chose to write an article. I made this decision as my other ideas required learning something new from scratch which made my worry about how much progress I could make during the limited 4 months of this project. Contrarily, writing was a skill which I already had, but could improve on (being a STEM student, my writing, though not bad, is not the best) in addition to this, writing is a relevant skill outside the context of this project which is something I value. I don’t want to learn something just for the sake of learning, I need to be able to use it elsewhere.
Then came the decision on what to write about. At first I was contemplating on writing an analysis on the use of backdrop in anime, which ended up too broad so I decided to focus on a single anime. There wasn’t too much indecision for this, I was obviously going to choose a show which I liked. The Monogatari Series is one which I really like (was going to explain why but it ended up repeating the points in my article) and has two distinctive features which I could analyze: the unique animation and the aberrations, of which I chose the latter. Naturally, with the constraint of time, I chose to focus only on Bakemonogatari.
I would like to thank Shymander for giving me this opportunity. At first I was planning to post my article as a forum post, but I reached out to Shymander who said he would be willing to publish it as a featured article. He also helped me through the writing process, especially with the editing which has ended up as a good learning experience for improving my writing. It was a great experience being able to work with him.
Thank you for reading (both this and my article)! Please feel free to leave comments/feedback.
