CAMPIONE! FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Campione! has one episode released. Is that enough for me to say you should go watch it? Absolutely not. However, it was well done enough for me to suggest that you go check it out and maybe keep up with it once in a while.

TL;DR If you’re looking for your well done standard shonen/action romance/harem anime of this season, Campione! is not a bad place to start.

STORY : 7.5
You have this dude: Kusanagi Godou who’s like your stereotypical shonen protagonist, but with some more likeable personality traits than your average Ouma Shu. First off, he’s thrust into this unknown situation of gods and mythological deities duking it out in power displays of potentially apocalyptic proportions and what does he do? He grabs his secret bundle and seizes the power he needs to get in order to save the world (and the pretty girl who happens to meet him). Wait, I’ve seen this before? Yeah, you have, but it’s why we watch it. You don’t come here for super innovation or art house productions, (see Bakemonogatari, Code Geass) you come here for a rollicking good time. And that so far, is what Campione! gives you.
You have your essential boy meets girl, boy discovers super powers, saves the world, arouses said girl into potentially romantic feelings, and some decent animation. This is what we come to see. Brainless fun. And that is what Campione! gets you, in the VERY FIRST episode.
*A note to the light novel (LN) readers, this episode actually skips I think, the first 2 volumes and heads straight into the action. Some character introductions are thusly not as covered as they should’ve been.
Still, for a first episode, it delivers on the shonen goods.

CHARACTER: 8
Can’t really say too much as of yet, although if the anime is like the LNs, you’ll find Godou and Erica Blandelli to be far less annoying than some, Ouma Shu, I’m looking at you.
First episode impressions: Godou is very typical of a shonen protagonist, but possesses a determination/potential badassery that’ll make the show more enjoyable to watch. Note on potential. He has the opportunity to redeem for the badass male lead in the beginning that shows like Sword Art Online have already established.
Erica Blandelli, your tsundere counterpart, only with more dere apparent in the first episode than you would expect. Seems like a good female lead. Plus Hikasa Youko is the VA, can’t really go wrong with that.
They also have Eri Kitamura, and Hanazawa Kana voicing the other females. You KNOW you’re going to get some enjoyable female roles out of this.

SOUND: 7
Sounds like your standard shonen show. Well done though, nothing too cheesy. But nothing transcendent. (The only thing really that Guilty Crown got right, that and animation).

ANIMATION : 7.5
Again, does the job fine for its purpose. Fluid enough, colorful enough, effects are decent.

ENJOYMENT: 8.5
What can I say, I’m a sucker for this kind of anime. I like to turn my brain off when I watch these episodes after class or work, so these types of shows are perfect for that fact. It doesn’t need to provoke or intellectually titillate me for me to endorse this show. It’s just…entertaining. What it is.
So pick it up, check it out, seems like your well done shonen anime of the season, although, this season seems to have a good number of potentially entertaining shonen anime. You can turn your brain off for most of them I wager.
