End of August: Johannes Bridge - Log 1 (Dead Reign RPG)
My name is Johannes Bridge. I am a Special Ops Commando for the US Military Force... or was, at least. After The Wave struck a year ago, my life underwent a complete paradigm shift. All I knew was that even though I had to walk among the dead, I had to live - if not for myself, but for others. I may sound like them Shepherds but I couldn't give up my specialized training to be part of the rescue team.
I may be a soldier, but I am also an writer. I used to write a journal in the military before - but that's gone now. I decided to rewrite the journal only now since it seems like there's been a change of game. I've been fighting off them for a year now, but it seems the tides are a tad bleak this time.
Day 1:
Woke up to a relatively peaceful day in the survivor camp in Scar City. Like almost any other day, I'd see those two guards patrolling around my bunk and the farm. They told me the gearheads picked up a brand new water purifier from some scrap somewhere. Water was the the thing we needed the most. With it, the survivor camp wouldn't be restricted to stocking up processed water.
I went to the gearheads' place and true enough, they were working on some machinery that greatly resembled today's water purifiers. But there was a problem - it wasn't working. It was missing mechanical parts and could only be reconstructed given a few days of repair... or if we get the mechanical parts it needed today.
I wanted it repaired as soon as possible so I lent a hand to collect the parts it needed... but I had no escorts and there's hardly any luck to finding salvageable mechanical parts in the survivor camp. Moving parts and engines are a rare find around here.
But fortunately a group of Reapers came into the camp today. I went and met them. A strange bunch of people, they are.
Among them was their CO, Lisa, a tough young lady who had such flagrantly short orange hair. Some of her men were also strange cases. I met an eccentric man my age named Ellis(or Killswitch, as he likes to be called) and Morgan, a slightly disgruntled chain smoker guy.
To make the trip easier and safer, we got an old but reliable Shepherd(ironically named Sheperd) and a gearhead(Mikhail) to accompany us in the search.
As soon as we were ready, the four of us went towards the abandoned yet still-in-shape building a few clicks from the main camp.
The interior of the building was run down... as expected of a year of depreciation. We headed down the basement floors to head to the generator room. We went down numerous empty storerooms and rusted hallways.
We finally reached the deepest part of the basement after some doing. Much to my dismay, the generator room was located in the sewers. After a year of derelict, one has to wonder what the sewers would be like...
Strangely, the generator was not actually broken. It was only turned off - strange. As to why people would worry about conserving energy after The Wave is a complete mystery to me. With Mikhail's help, we got the engine back running.
But then there was the rub.
The loud noise of the generator whir awoke some dormant zombies we never noticed were around. During that time, we only thought that we had to run. We ran towards the sewer door. To my surprise, something tripped Mikhail and me. Ellis and Sheperd ran into a horde zombie(a much weaker Sloucher).
Ellis handled the horde zombie pretty well. I wouldn't expect less from a Reaper. But what tripped me? Why, nothing else but a crawler hiding in shallow sewer waters, of course. Fortunately, all it took was a few slugs and a powerful head-crushing stomp.
We heard the infamous zombie moan echo throughout the sewer. At that time, we just ran to the sewer door and locked it tight.
Back upstairs, Ellis went to the surveillance room. He said that an unidentified bogey was inside the elevator and was heading well way down. We had the guns at ready when the elevator opened, only to find out it had already escaped through the hatch.
Ellis took the initiative and blockaded the fire exit and elevator. He took the reception bell and placed it on the elevator blockade to see if someone had been there.
We marched back into the camp and decided to call it a day for now.
That night though, Ellis noticed a jawless zombie on top of a structure was watching us. I lent him my custom Anti-Mat rifle to shoot it just in case it did something stupid. He was left there for the whole night.
Day 2:
Today, Eliis, Sheperd and I went out into the city to look for spare machine parts. We went through the man-made ruin-barriers from the camp.
Outside was a complete ruin. There was a lot of rubble scattered around and many machine parts were broken or unusable.
Until, we ran across an abandoned hotrod. It was still fresh and looked like it had only been here for a few days at most. As far as we're concerned, it was still working. We opened the trunk and salvaged some winter clothes. Winter's gonna be a bitch when it comes.
Then, some large man approached Ellis as he tried to break the car door open. He struggled against this man and subdued him. We tried to ask him questions, but he remained silent. However, he was able to take Ellis weapon and reverse the odds.
But it seemed this man meant no harm. He finally spoke and asked why we were taking his car. Of course, we told him the gearheads were looking for spare mechanical parts.
He told us that he is a drifter and he'd been out cold in this city for a day or so. He doesn't remember anything before he was knocked out. But something in his head told him that he must head to the south. A migration instinct, perhaps?
Off he drove to the distance. I don't know what the possible cause was, but a moment later, his car exploded. His body was nowhere to be found and the engine was now defunct.
The explosion alerted the dead. Before we could even think of getting back to camp, they were on to us already. And among them was, frighteningly, a juggernaut. Fortunately, they were pretty slow and I was able to tear off the leg and severely damage the juggernaut with my rifle.
To finish it off, Lisa arrived and set ablaze a part of the road, scaring off the dead, leave for one fast zombie that tried to assault us. We killed it no problem.
We went back to the camp before dark. There, we got our rest and replenished our tired bodies. Lisa thought that the horde might find the camp, so she got Ellis' bike and made it run off by itself into the distance to divert the zombies.
But in the middle of the night, a Reaper approached us and said to come to the gates, as there was something incredibly strange going on.
Outside, we saw a little girl slowly approaching the camp with an unsettling gait. Her hands were reaching out, as if asking for help. Her entire being was covered in blood and as she crept closer, we started to hear her unintelligible murmuring.
The whole camp was on their toes, as they tried to speak to the girl but answered with no response. We just pointed our guns at her. When she finally got to the grating, she started rattling it as if in desperation. We still refused to open it, in fear that she might be one of them mock zombies.
To our shock, the jawless zombie crept behind her and slashed her from behind, killing the girl in one blow. She was definitely human. Strangely, the zombie just stood there, looking at me. Yes, that jawless zombie stared at me intently and gave me the most uncanny feeling that it was smiling at me. Despite it having no jaw, for some reason I felt that it was smiling at me.
The rest of the camp fired at it. With that, it fled back into the darkness.
We opened the gate and retrieved the body. Ellis held it like a little child in his arms. Surprisingly, the girl was still alive and stroked her hand on Ellis' face...
...then its head explodes.
A few moments later, the limp and headless body got up and walked towards a wall. It continued to do so and then, it fell on its back and started to crab-walk. It was fast and tried to claw the other camp members.
Everyone opened fire at it until it died again. After investigating the corpse, we found a mysterious new organ that popped and bled intensely - but it wasn't a heart, that's for sure.
Lisa took pictures of it and I drew a sketch of the corpse to give to Morgan. Lisa told him to take these evidences and have the rest of the Reapers check it out back at Colorado.
For all we knew, this might be an evolution of the zombies. This could turn out to be, in the words of Lisa, a game breaker.
Day 3:
Everyone was visibly disturbed by last night's incident. This included even Lisa, who to her stress, punched a hole through my favorite sandbag.
Later, we went back to the derelict building we were in a few days ago. I, along with 3 more young shepherds, went with Ellis upstairs as he told us about a zombie on the 19th floor being shot down by a barrage of bullets this morning.
We took the fire exit and went up to the 19th floor. We knocked on a window of the room, and found a man to be living inside. We went inside and found a veritable fortress filled with food. He even had internet access. The man who owned the joint was named Kyle. He was well aware of the camp outside but refuses to go out as he was sure he could survive the whole apocalypse alone.
We used his internet to find out about the new zombie species. All we found were Morgan's to-be-delivered photos and my sketch. It puts a bit of ease that there are still numerous places one could access the internet.
I went back down with Ellis, leaving the shepherds with Kyle. We went into the surveillance room. We observed the same dark zombie rise and knock on Kyle's door again. But this time, it wasn't shot. We decided to just wait and observe it.
Ellis told me he was once a guard who worked in a correctional facility. He recalls killing a prison breaker there and finds this situation incredibly similar to what he did in his past life. Our conversation slowly evolved into some form of philosophy, for some weird reason.
I after a while and got some fresh air. It was raining heavily and I suppose a storm had stuck already. I was surprised though as I saw Lisa running urgently through the rain. She signaled me that Ellis was in trouble. We quickly rushed to the surveillance room... but was fortunate to find Ellis s'well and victorious against a zombie that ambushed him.
He told us that there was another crab-walker on the 15th floor. Although they could not transfer floors, we were worried about Kyle. We ran up the fire exit again and to floor 19. We knocked on the window again, but there was no answer.
We went into the window and into Kyle's room. It was pitch black and we had to use a flashlight. We checked into the bathroom and found that Kyle had hung himself on the bathroom pipes. Strange, as he seemed to be overly satisfied with his life in the room.
We searched for the other shepherds... but to no avail. Though, we found one of the female shepherds buried in a pile of cans. Her abdomen was sliced cleanly in half, and black liquid oozes from her insides. It was extremely disturbing. Ellis grabbed a knife from the kitchen and found it, too, covered in the black liquid.
We observed the time and dusk was approaching. We ran down the fire exit and back to the survivors' camp.
The group took its rest and pondered about what was happening to everything. To my dismay, a guard approached us again. It only meant more trouble.
He then asked us:
"Did someone else go into the building? A fourth person?"
