WSJ Rankings (ToC) FAQ
The ToC is strictly poll based.
Take a look how such a TOC looks: ToC sample
1)The magazine layout takes the series which have color pages out and gives it in the middle. The other ranked series are visible on the right except of course the cover which is also not ranked.
“Imagine there is a cool chapter which deserve to get an high position in the magazine series order, that chapter should be given a low position only because the chapter 8 issues ago sucked?! Likewise, you get a sucking chapter first position because 8 issues ago it was good? You have to imagine the reader of the magazine, which order they get their series each issue. It's clear the magazine management aim is to make a good composition of the current chapters of the current issue they are releasing”
2) It would be a smart suggestion, but once again, WSJ is a strictly poll based magazine. They use ONLY color pages to promote a series. They give them when a new arc starts or when an arc hit its peak or for thousand other reasons but this is the only promotional tool they have. Best example of that is Kuroko no Basket. I don’t know if you were around when it started. When it started WSJ wanted desperately a sports series to survive. They gave it TONS of color pages but it was as much in the bottom as it had color pages. If they just could it place where they wanted, why not just place it constantly in the TOP 5?
“Why should they base it on polls of 8 issues ago?”
3) I think we should ask the Editor in chief for that, hehe. I only can guess. It probably has something to do with the beginning of the magazine. When it started it had no big name authors but only new unknown authors. So they included questionnaire cards and put a lot of weight to the outcome of those polls. It worked and they become the most successful manga magazine in Japan and they are still the most successful magazine out there. While other magazines are losing readers they are gaining readers. Why change something that works, right?
