Anime Relations: Bleach
Bleach (280 – 286 / 288 – 290) [Re-watch]
The battle against Yammi gets a little more interesting with the arrival of Kempachi and Byakuya, but I still get the impression Yammi wasn’t really priotized by the author when he made the Espada; he seems lacking overall as a character.

The battle with Stark could have been more exciting but was decent overall. I understand why they changed a plot element from the manga and
Stark was strong though, no doubt about that. He singlehandedly defeated 2 former Soul Reaper captains and gave a lot of grief to the other 2 as well and considering the Resurreccion is the Espade’s equivalent of a Shikai, I can’t imagine how powerful he’d be if he had reached his absolute form, as Ulquiorra had.

Barragan’s battle was, again, one of the most exciting in these last few episodes. I especially liked how they brought about his demise, very cleaver.

Hallibel’s battle was pretty much over long ago and this felt like an unnecessary extension. Her backstory was anime original content and it wasn’t anything extraordinary but it stands right alongside the other Arrancar flashbacks in the series thus far in quality.

The main event these last episodes was Tosen’s battle. Emotional and interesting with decent choreography. We’re finally getting to really know the character and what makes him tick. Although, his Resurreccion is ugly as fuck. Observation: If Tosen got a Resurreccion in Hollowfiled form and we know Ichigo transformed into something similar to that as well in his fight against Ulquiorra, those that mean all Vizards/Hollowfied Soul Reapers can achieve Resurreccion as well?

Bleach (291 – 297 / 300) [Re-watch]
SPOILERS! I don’t think I need tags this far into the series; I mean, come on.
I don’t care what anyone says, the battle against Aizen is the high point of this series. His single handedly defeating all the Soul Reapers has to be the best part of the fight as well. We all knew Aizen was powerful but we didn’t really understand how much until now. You also have to hand it to Kubo for managing to shock in the exact same way twice with Momo. Yamamoto’s battle was also pretty great and showed why he’s the Head Captain. The recap was unnecessary, again, and the filler episodes were introduced at the worst possible time. The arrival of Urahara and his comrades was expected but fun although its pretty obvious they don’t have the skills to take down Aizen alone. It still seems like Urahara is the only one that ever made Aizen sweat though. Ichigo’s battle against Gin is decent but nothing to write home about. To be honest, I expected more from that battle; I also didn’t think it would be Ichigo who would fight him.

In retrospect, now that I understand the underlying themes behind the battle of Ichigo vs. Aizen as well as why they both progressively get stronger throughout the series, Aizen’s lack of prudence suddenly makes sense and Ichigo’s growing wisdom as well.

Bleach (301 – 302 / 306 – 310) [Re-watch]
Finally, I completed my re-watch. Granted, I still have the next arc to go but I’m waiting until they animate the rest of the manga before I go there. When I first watched the series, I found the last battle underwhelming but as I said above, now that I understand what is at play, it makes more sense and isn’t just an overpowered battle anymore. I think this is an appropriate conclusion for not only this arc but the series as well. This leads me to wonder what the next arc (The manga’s final arc) could possibly offer. Hopefully, with any luck, I’ll know in the near future.

Anime Relations: Bleach
Bleach (202 – 203 / 206 – 211) [Re-watch]
The Noitora retrospective was overly long for a guy who is essentially an asshole; although it was worth it for Nel's backstory.

Bleach usually stinks at flashback episodes but the Past Arc is a rare case of when they handled themselves pretty well. It starts out pretty entertaining and funny, introduces us to the characters efficiently, ties a few loose ends and then gets right to business. I’m glad they didn’t stretch the “Soul Reapers are disappearing” angle and went right for the reveal as it was sorta obvious in all honesty. The confrontation with Aizen is the highlight, as usual, and I’m looking forward to the conlusion.

Bleach (212 / 215 – 221) [Re-watch]
These episodes were pretty average which is the norm for lower fights in this series. Kira’s fight was somewhat okay, Ikkaku’s fight was non-existent, Yumichika’s fight was... the less said about this one the better. And finally, Shuuhei’s fight was actually the best of the bunch this time around. Now it seems the battle is heating up but we’re still dealing with lieutenants and Fracions right now.

Bleach (222 – 226 / 266 – 271) [Re-watch]
I understand why they made it, but the recap was pointless and as usual, the battles involving Renji, Chad and other low ranking combatants are a chore to get through; with Omaeda as a particularly horrible standout. With that said, the battle against Aion and Uryu’s battle were pretty decent and even though they were essentially just powering up for the real fight, the Espada battles, including Ichigo’s, were pretty good. Ichigo’s battle against Ulquiorra was hilariously one-sided. It’s obvious Ulquiorra is more powerful than Ichigo. Heck, in his second form he’s probably more powerful than the first Espada. Still, I suppose Ichigo doesn’t really have a choice but to fight, as the other option is waiting to die.

Bleach (272 – 279) [Re-watch]
Ichigo’s hollow transformation is definitely the most awesome to date and his battle with Ulquiorra was the stuff of legends. Yammy however, continues to be a rather disappointing Espada and I’m glad they’re not wasting too much time with his battle. Hallibel’s battle dragged as well but Stark’s was decent and Barragan’s was awesome. I think Barragan’s Resurreccion is most definitely the best of all the Espada, no contest.
the battle is indeed going to get intense fast. Ultimately this arc is one giant super battle. I’m not complaining and I think it’s where the series hits its stride but you really have to be into shonen to fully appreciate this arc.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (46 – 50) [Re-watch]
Spoiler Alert! You have been warned.
Meer’s final moments were more emotional than one would expect (Although that “dance” move when she got shot was stupid) and the series had some nice moments before the finale kicked in. The finale itself was everything you’d want it to be: Epic, grandiose, intense and emotional. It brought some of the series’ most intense battle sequences and managed to not only give us 3 episodes of solid action, but do so in a paced manner that interweaves character development, story progression and thematic development throughout; which resulted in them actually pulling it off. The action didn’t feel like it was too much, which usually would happen with it concentrated to such an amount. And the final confrontation between Kira and Durandall was expertly executed as well.

With that said, not everything was rainbows and unicorns. Some of the acting was jarringly bad (Isolated, thankfully), there was repeated animation at times (Unforgivable for a finale) and the ending left us without an epilogue of any sort (Rectified in later versions I believe).

All in all though, a very satisfying ending to one of the best chapters in Gundam history.

Bleach (194 – 201)[Re-watch]
A pretty good series of fights. The battle between Neliel and Noitora wasn’t excessively exciting but it was still awesome just to see Noitara getting his ass handed to him by a girl. Mayuri and Espada #8’s fight was actually well handled and pretty interesting; we got to see who’s the worse mad scientist and we had a rather entertaining competition of seeing just how over the top their pre-battle preparations could be (FYI, it worse than Batman's). Byakuya’s battle was another display of arrogance and power on his part but awesome all the way through thanks to it. And of course, Kenpachi’s battle proved to be even more intense and physical than Ichigo and Grimmjow’s. I like how opponents were paired against their counterparts for battle: Mayuri and Szayel Aporro (Mad scientists), Byakuya and Zommari (Arrogant, dutiful pricks), Ichigo and Grimmjow (Speed and physical warriors who like to fight and compete) and Kempachi and Noitora (Bloodthirsty, brutal warriors).

Shomin Sample (1 – 6)
A fun and nice series so far. It’s mainly comedic and has its share of fanservice, although it’s not really focused on it. I really like the characters so far and I’m looking forward to see where this goes.

Shomin Sample (7 – 12)
That was actually a pretty satisfying ending, even though it still left plenty of questions for a second season to explore (Like who the hell the maid is). This show had characters interesting enough to carry it through its more serious and slice of life elements without going overboard and it had a decent balance of regular and sexual comedy that made it work. I also like how the ending was more “grandiose” than the rest of the series but didn’t take itself too seriously as well; avoiding the pitfall of many comedic series where they try to be too dramatic at the end.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (26 – 32) [Re-watch]
Seeing Stella’s story unfold is truly tragic. You know those fighting her don’t really have a choice and you know Neo doesn’t like what he’s doing but again, doesn’t have a choice (She needs drugs to live which I’m guessing the alliance won’t provide if she stops being useful as “equipment”) and can’t keep his promise. It’s made all the worse when you know she’s essentially a traumatized victim of intensive child abuse where traumatic suggestions are used to control her and it’s made painfully clear that underneath it all she really is a normal girl who just wants to be happy. Of course, the only negative side of this powerful and emotional story is that Shinn is going to be even more unbearable now but given the character’s purpose in the series it can’t really be helped.

Beyond that, it’s hard to argue that the last battle was indeed the most heated confrontation to date and another prime example of the Earth Alliance’s barbarism as well. Durandall doesn’t have to work hard to get these bastards to compromise themselves. As for the upcoming episodes, for lack of a better term, shit is going to hit the fan!

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (33 – 39) [Re-watch]
Epic is the only word to use here. I won’t bother with spoiler tags, anything beyond this point is beyond spoilers and you read at your own risk. Durandall exposes Logos (Who are essentially the Illuminati). His strategy up to this point is revealed at last. His long term plan was ambitious and meticulous but paid off big time. The power of the people is demonstrated in spades here as Logos is almost destroyed by the revolting masses even though ZAFT did little to even shake that group in nearly 3 years of war. The chairman is still foreshadowed as someone not to be trusted (The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my ally!?) even within the same speech in which he strikes a crippling blow against humanity’s enemy and our suspicions are confirmed in the next episodes with the attack on the Archangel and Athrun's forced escape and defection from ZAFT which brought us some of the most tense moments in the series thus far. Then there’s the attack on Heaven’s Base, which brings all of the elements of war, intensity and mayhem of the series to its highest levels yet with some of the fiercest fighting. That battle is mainly the opportunity for Shinn and Rey to show off their new machines as well. And finally, we end these episodes with Kira gaining a new and better mobile suit and showcasing its powers in all its glory.

Bleach (161 – 167, 190 – 193) [Re-watch]
It’s interesting to re-watch Bleach without the fillers as you don’t have major arcs interrupted and it’s also interesting to have watched the fillers before the Hueco Mundo Arc, as they definitely felt more natural and appropriate there. With that said, these episodes still suffered from a severe case of massive recap (5 minutes before each episodes and, in one instance, the first half of the entire episode) that were wholly unnecessary. If they really needed the time that badly, they could have at least extended the fights, made the fillers longer or just taken a break; massive recaps every episodes is just lazy.

The battle between Grimmjow and Ichigo was intense to be sure but the one between Uryu and Renji against the 8th Espada was rather bland. It wasn’t bad, but it definitely dragged unnecessarily and it probably didn’t help that it kept interrupting a solid fight with Ichigo as well. Nel’s revelation was surprising (The first time I saw it) but in retrospect, having re-watched the series, there were hints since the first encounter something wasn’t right with her and her reveal was certainly handled well. Her asskicking of Noitora has begun and I believe it’s a high point of this part of the series; especially the irony of Ichigo coming to save the captured princess and himself being rescued by the kid he brought along.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (40 – 45) [Re-watch]
Massive spoilers, duh! The Logos saga comes to an end and now we await to see what the man who defeated the Illuminati will do. From the monumental battle of Orb, to the reveal of the new mobile suits, to Cagali taking back control like a boss, to rampant destruction of the PLANTS to the battle of the Moon and the death of Jibril… these episodes weren’t lacking in excitement or intensity and the series truly hit its peak once again. If memory serves they manage to top themselves in the last few episodes to come too. Thinking about it now, there are a lot of people who don’t like this season and I sort of get why. But in my opinion, once you understand that Shinn is not the main character but an important secondary character, the entire show is more enjoyable and if anything tops the first season; just my opinion anyway.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (1 – 6) [Re-watch]
It starts off more exciting than the first series with more intensity and better handled, and animated, action sequences. Shin proves annoying and hilariously seems to have confused many of the fanbase into believing he’s the main character of the new series; I suspect because he pilots the new Gundam and is similar in attitude to Kamille from Zeta Gundam, but Athrun is this series’ main character and it seems pretty well established by this point. I like that they cut the “space pursuit” arc short in this series and we get to thick of the action right away. The incident involving Junius 7 has reached high levels of intensity and promises more with hints of Kira and Lacus at last.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (7 – 9) [Re-watch]
This series kicks off its plot and the intensity much sooner than the previous one. Starting with the
it also seems to move from one epic and devastating event to the next and with expert precision I might add. I do love both Seed and Seed Destiny but I remain certain now that I’m re-watching it that Destiny is the superior series.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (10 – 17) [Re-watch]
The Meer ploy and the attempt on Lacus certain should have been early indicators to all that
Athrun makes the wrong decision, again, and seems even more clueless than usual. He literally gets caught up on current even in between elevator rides. Shinn certainly shows promise and demonstrated some pretty high levels of awesome when he
but he still continues to show arrogance and small mindedness that will undoubtedly cost him. Kira is finally back into main focus and it seems his skills haven’t rusted at all and apparently he’s the king of wedding crashers.

The most intriguing character so far is the chairman, Duradall. He obviously isn’t weak or an idiot and his overall strategy seems very well thought out. He is seemingly allowing his enemy to show its true colors, committing act of atrocities without end and mistake after mistake. Meanwhile, he seeks only self-defence and to assist those asking for help while providing humanitarian aid. By doing so, his enemy is slowly coming of the shadows and the people is slowly turning against them and supporting the coordinators. This strategy is not only brilliant and not only proves that there are times when not fighting back is the answer, but it bears disturbing and almost prophetic similarities to events ongoing in the real world right now.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (18 – 25) [Re-watch]
Important episodes for sure. Kira finally makes his long awaited comeback to the battlefield and as much as Shinn has been hyped as an ace pilot, it seems he’s still no match for the ultimate coordinator as
These episodes also allowed to see to a greater extent the full level of depravity of the Earth Forces in both their occupation of territory and some more insight into just how disgusting their human experimentations have been. The meeting between Kira and Athrun was emotional and somewhat intense but it seems Athrun is the one deluding himself. Stella’s capture will no doubt lead to more emotional moments as well this time with Shinn.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (25 – 29) [Re-watch]
Some pretty intense episodes and more to come base on what I remember. These episodes were top notch quality safe for the recap frenzy that happened. We’re approaching the turning point in the series that brings everything to an all new level.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (30 – 38) [Re-watch]
This is where things get epic and awesome. The plot, now set up for over 30 episodes, really kicks in. Psychological developments move to entirely new grounds in both dark and hopeful paths in what is increasingly becoming an interesting study of war-psychology and the battles are heating up to new heights as the themes are also bearing fruits. Now the underlying elements of anarchy, authoritarianism and corrupt democracy are coming together and into the open.
Its moment like these I remember why I love this series and I think it was the perfect time to watch it with the HD Remaster and, more than likely, the movies coming out on physical media in 2018.

Bleach (152 – 160) [Re-watch]
We’re finally done with the Privarone Espada. Rukia’s fight with Espada #9 was decent but nothing to write home about and Renji’s fight with Espada #8 doesn’t really amount to anything exciting until when Mayuri shows up if I remember. Still, these episodes managed to pull themselves together gracefully in spite of rather weak material. I’m at least looking forward to the upcoming confrontations on Ichigo’s side of the battle.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (39 – 44) [Re-watch]
Again, some pretty eventful episodes. The epic and emotional battle of Orb, important realizations about family lineage, the formation of the 3 Ships’ Alliance… These episodes deliver, there’s no doubt of that. The gathering of Earth forces at the Moon, Rau’s so called “final door” and the cliffhanger on which the last episode ended also promise a pretty intense conclusion; on which it delivers splendidly, if I remember correctly.

I also have to say I like how the 3 Ships’ Alliance

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (45 – 50) [Re-watch]
A truly epic finale for the first half of the story. Intense and heavy in action but not over-saturated. Through the action, which is itself well-choreographed and exciting, the series develops the characters’ psychology, advances the plot and brings the themes to a clause in a progressive, detailed and precise manner. It’s a perfectly executed epic conclusion to an epic tale of war and tragedy.

I’m beginning Destiny today and looking forward to it.
