Anime Relations: Death Note
NOTE: I orginaly had this on the forum but one of the moderators decided it wasn't a discussion post, even though it sparked a lively discussion. Make of that what you will.

Every now and then I see topics on this forum to do with Anime and Parents - and, from what I gauge, it doesn't mix well a lot of the time - leading to some fairly humorous reactions to it. So it got me thinking: What camp my Mother would fall under? Would she like or hate Anime if I showed her something? While I thought about dropping the idea naturally thinking she wouldn't, I decided to go head with my mission seeing some of the success stories on here.

Since my Mum is a massive fan of, Breaking Bad, Death Note was a fairly obvious choice from the start. Just replace Meth with a killer Notebook and you have the exact same television show - almost - plus the supernatual elements.

While I don't hide I watch Anime in the slightest, considering the amount of DVDs and Blu Rays blantantly on my shelf. I do watch it on exclusively in my room with headphones on. Because I like cranking up the sound and having it as loud as I want on my beautiful flatscreen. This also means my parents have never seen me watching it before. So it made me kind of nervous bringing the topic up to her too watch it. I wondered if she even knew what anime even was?

Too make a long story short, I got the balls and asked her. Suprisingly she said, "Yes," almost instantly after I told her the plot. I did though leave out the Shinigami thinking it might be too weird for her out of context.... And maybe the fact that it was animated. She didn't take it too well learning it was. Mum just doesn't care for animation in general.

I asked her to atleast give the first three episodes a chance before deciding to quit. She agreed and started.

To my suprise, and her's! She really liked it, but questioned how you could make an entire tv show out of a guy killing people with a notebook? Once the end of the second episode happend she was sold on the series.

It took a fair bit for her too watch it all. About a month (Mum works a full time job and doesn't get home till late a lot of the time. She can generally only watch one a night, but on her days off she watches a few).

After it was all done and dusted, Mum turned to me and thanked me for showing her the series. She really appreciated it and never thought she would ever watch or like an Anime series - And yes! She learnt a new word as well. As an added bonus she even begun telling her friends about it that like Breaking Bad.

Anyway, that's the end of my little experiment. I never, ever thought my Mum would watch an Anime series, let alone like and thank me for it. It's good to see someone else that now has an appreciation for it, and doesn't think it's just Pokemon and Hentai.

So, yeah. Thanks for reading through this. I hope a lot of you can have similar experiences like me. While I'm not writing this up too brag, I just thought it would be fun to post my findings and experience.

Oh! And her favourite character was, Ryuk, ironically. I thought the Shinigami at the time would turn her off the series.
