Entertainment is a science, subjectivity is objectively explainable
Anime Relations: High School DxD, Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai.
A good amount of what I'm sharing here is theory based on observation. What I believe is that there are logical reasons as to why any and all entertainment genres appeal to us. Subjectivity, or specific works not necessarily appealing to us, is also logically based on the things we can personally relate to, which are influenced by our socialization and upbringing.
Entertainment like any other science consists of organized knowledge that can be tested with observations and predictions. To be specific, it's in fact a derivative of social science. One of the most obvious indicators that entertainment is in fact a science is the use of tropes. In our culture, there are common ideas that we are ingrained which are reflected in entertainment. These are ideas that can be reused consistently because of how our ability to appreciate entertainment is ultimately tied to experiences that we can (in)directly relate to.
Why is this important? To an extent, one of the common modern day criticisms I hear about entertainment in general is a lack of originality. And to an extent, this is a fair argument. There is literally nothing that is original as of modern day. Every entertaining concept that we know of is something that has been used before. However, this does not necessarily mean that a lack of originality is a bad thing. What has to be put in perspective is that entertainment and its originality is in fact limited by our cultural boundaries. What we can accept as entertaining depends on the experiences, values, and ideas our society can conceptualize. And to be realistic, probably 99.9% of modern day ideas are things that have existed essentially since the beginning of society itself. With that in perspective, I almost question the concept of calling entertainment "original" valid. Again, this is because entertainment is primarily restricted by culture, the actual original source of ideas and concepts that we relate to.
As of late, one of the genres that interests me the most is ecchi. There's a few reasons for this. One of them is the fact it is a heavily criticized genre, being labeled as unoriginal, uninspired, cliched, and generally speaking laden with fanservice. And to be extremely objective, these are accurate assessments of ecchi. They do not however really explain why it is so stigmatized in spite of the fact it clearly has a market. If sexualized humor wasn't funny, then there wouldn't be a point in producing it. Clearly because it is produced and consumed, the only objective logical conclusion we can reach is that ecchi has legitimate entertainment value.
I've written a review for Dakara boku wa H ga Dekinai that highlights my opinions of ecchi. To sum that up, ecchi is a highly character driven genre with a side emphasis on visual appeal. What makes ecchi enjoyable is how likable its main character is. In most ecchi comedy, the premise is deliberately meant to be fantastically ridiculous, which goes against our usual societal conventions that we understand. And it is through having a main character that we relate with well that ecchi becomes fun and humorous. A popular ecchi such as High School DxD accomplishes this though its main female lead Rias, who aside from being attractive, is a well developed, interesting, confident, and a commanding presence. High School DxD like any other show can be appreciated due to viewer capacity to relate to something (in this case, it's a main character), and subconsciously compare/contrast elements of the world envisioned around that character to what we know. It is also worth keeping in mind that as an ecchi genre, its sexual appeal visually is also a legitimate basis of viewer capacity to relate to elements of entertainment. Humans as a species are biologically designed to appreciate sex, so it's something that we (mostly) universally relate to.
Why have I made such a big deal on ecchi specifically? In the end, I feel like simplicity of ecchi easily let's me understand basic conventions of entertainment. It is criticized for very specific reasons, and it can be easily appreciated for other specific reasons. At least in the United States, our culture clearly teaches us that sex is taboo. And in many reviews, I observe the same criticisms that reflect this. Evidently, most of us are taught to believe that sex is not intelligent, and that we need to more or less avoid it completely to preserve the purity of our supposedly more intelligent elements of other genres. It is especially evident when people express shock that every so often, an "intelligent" ecchi comes out with a supposedly strong story and character development (though I will remind you, the most important element of an ecchi is the main character).
This brings me to the point that subjectivity is objectively explainable. In the example of ecchi, I clearly hold a completely different stance on the genre compared to many people, who hold the more commonly recognized viewpoint that ecchi is unintelligent, uninspired, etc. This difference of opinion does not mean that subjectivity makes analysis unable to be logical. Rather, it is a sign that the logical basis for the analysis of entertainment can be understood through the way our culture and society works, and the way people are brought up. You might ask, how the hell did I personally come to my conclusions about ecchi specifically? I would say most simply that I find sex funny and interesting and a very natural thing to appreciate, and my upbringing and life direction has taught me to think that way.
I am also perfectly aware that although I'm trying hard to make a general point about entertainment, I almost entirely ignored other genres in my analysis. So it's probably fair to ask what I think about other genres. And my cop out (but honest) answer is that there's many a good and bad show for every genre, and logical reasons to appreciate them. Action shows obviously are something of a sensory treat. Slice of life is meant to very directly relate to our understanding of "real life". Drama appeals to us emotionally with multiple relatable characters in a thoughtful scenario. Comedy appeals to us making some familiar things seem outrageous. I won't explain these quite as in depth however, simply because for me, ecchi best demonstrates how entertainment works, and that quality entertainment as a whole has a very logical basis that can always be objectively analyzed in relation to societal contexts.
For me, knowing that entertainment is logical and subjectivity is objectively explainable is true justification for the reviewing of entertainment. In this way, I can understand that we will not always like the same entertainment, but this is often due to explainable reasons. I also believe that by knowing this, I am able to care about having a clear understanding of the purpose of entertainment to appreciate it. And finally, I understand the production of entertainment is a practical thing which enables us to connect to our culture and life experiences in a way that feels good.

SoraOto Fanfic "Learn to Respect, Learn to Love"
Anime Relations: Sora no Otoshimono, Sora no Otoshimono Forte
Note: cut and pasted this here for a friend. Although I don't mind if anyone else reads it if they're a fan of the SoraOto series. This is adult rated fyi. Leave comments on http://a2zomg.deviantart.com/art/Learn-to-Respect-Learn-to-Love-278189505 preferably.
Today starts with clear skies, appearing like it would welcome another typical summer day for Tomoki and his friends. It should be noted the word "typical" is not easily defined in this context given that there is actually very little that comes predictably in a typical day for Tomoki and his friends. This may however be explained better if the perception of an "ideal" day is defined.
For Tomoki specifically, "Peace and quiet is number one!" as he would say, topped off by an adventure in seeking erotic things like any normal male teenager would desire. Given the nature of Tomoki's friends whether they intend it or not, his days only seldom end peacefully and quietly. Whether by a blunder resulting from Ikaros's undying devotion to serve Tomoki, tomfoolery with the dimwitted Astraea as well as the aloof Nymph, big shenanigans set up by the wealthy and sadistic Mikako, the odd potentially dangerous experiment presented by the bespectacled Sugata, or a karate chop to the back of the head from Sohara's disapproval of Tomoki's naturally perverted behaviors, Tomoki's days while unpredictable typically are busy with action and mischief of some sort. Then not too long ago yet another Angeloid by the name of Chaos took residence with Tomoki, which to him only further added complications to his living situation, much to his chagrin.
Tomoki awakened, seeing Ikaros sitting beside him Japanese style.
"Good morning Master," she said unflinchingly.
"Good morning Ikaros," Tomoki replied, then yawning. Without changing out of his pajamas, Tomoki made his way downstairs, and then...
"Good morning big bro!"
Tomoki was greeted by Chaos, who leapt into Tomoki's face. While small, she put a lot of force in her greeting, which was sufficient to knock Tomoki back into a wall roughly.
"Ugh...good morning, and for the last time, I said not to do that again," came the reply from Tomoki, who still was in the process of fully awakening.
"Big bro, can we do something fun today?" said Chaos, who dropped to the floor.
"I don't want to talk about that until we're done with breakfast. Alright?"
Tomoki arrived in his living room, with Chaos following him like a pet with her innocent admiration. They sat down by his table, next to Nymph who was absorbed in a soap opera on TV while eating assorted snacks.
"Hey Nymph, have you seen Astraea?"
"Yes," she replied. "Delta was here not long ago but was tired of waiting for breakfast, so she flew towards Mikako's residence. Right now she seems to be enjoying herself there along with Mikako and Sugata, and I doubt she will be back for most of the day after she's done stuffing herself silly."
"Huh, well good for her I guess. Got tired of sharing snacks with her I assume?"
"They're my snacks! I paid for them with the money you gave me."
Then, Tomoki heard a knock and his front door opening.
"Good morning Tomo! You awake? Did you have breakfast yet?" said a familiar voice.
"Oh, hey Sohara. Ikaros was just getting started with that."
"In that case, I guess I'll go help her out."
Sohara then made her way to Tomoki's kitchen. Ikaros was already there, having already started the preparation of steamed rice and miso soup. Also placed on the counter were fish, eggs, and various vegetables and seasonings. Recipes associated with those items could be observed to the side.
"Good morning Sohara"
"Good morning Ikaros, how are you doing?"
"I'm fine, but Master doesn't seem very happy today. I wonder if I did something wrong."
"I guess that's no surprise, but I don't think it's your fault. A lot has happened recently, and I imagine that it has been stressful for Tomoki to adjust."
"I want to do something to make Master feel happier, but I don't want to make him angry. He often seems to get upset when I do things for him and make a mistake. I wonder if he really needs me."
Sohara paused for a moment, briefly appearing both conflicted and unsure.
"Ikaros, I know Tomoki sometimes does get frustrated, but I think it's because you are very special to him. I feel he would be very worried if he woke up not knowing where you were. I'm sure you remember the first time you met him. The way I heard him tell me about you, it seems like he's always cared about you."
"Sometimes it looks like Master has more fun when he's with Nymph and Astrea though. Lately he doesn't seem very happy when he's with me."
"Well...Tomoki does sometimes like doing perverted things to them, and to me as well."
Sohara clenched her fist briefly, obviously cringing at the memory of one of Tomoki's pranks.
"But you're different. He always seems very protective of you, and never wants to do anything perverted to you."
Sohara wiped her face, hiding tears.
"Sohara, is something the matter?"
"Nothing Ikaros. You don't need to worry, I'm pretty sure Tomoki cares about you a lot. And I believe we should finish making breakfast for him."
It was pretty evident that something was the matter, but breakfast preparations proceeded without interruptions. However, Sohara could be observed glancing a bit restlessly at Ikaros, looking mildly concerned. Ikaros appeared to be behaving normally, although could be heard softly singing "Fallen Down" to herself. Sohara and Ikaros then completed making the breakfast of broiled fish, rolled omelet, rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables and delivered it to all who were present in Tomoki's house.
"Thank you Sohara and big sis Ikaros! It's all delicious!" chimed Chaos. "Big bro, can I help you finish your food so we all can do something fun?" she said inching closer to Tomoki.
"That's enough Chaos! I just want to finish my meal in peace and have time to think for myself." came the disgruntled reply.
"Chaos, I think I can do something fun with you today." said Sohara. "I think Tomoki will be happy to play with you some other time when he's less grumpy. Let's look for some new clothes and toys together for you."
At once, Chaos, who was still wearing the same nun outfit that she arrived with was escorted by Sohara and left with her.
"Huh, well I guess it's just me, Nymph, and Ikaros. Looks like a good time to relax!" Tomoki said to himself.
Tomoki finished his breakfast, and seeing Nymph occupied by the TV, and Ikaros occupied with cleanup, he prepared himself to take advantage of what appeared to be a rare opportunity to spend his day according to his ideals.
An ideal day for Tomoki would be free from interruptions and distractions, such as falling aliens, flying weirdoes, sadistic school presidents, and karate chopping childhood friends. While two such aliens were present in Tomoki's house, they appeared to be ignorable this particular day as if they were inanimate household objects. As a normal hormonal teenage boy, the single most dominating fun thought on Tomoki's mind was porn. Very, very much so today in fact. Given the entities Tomoki has been associated with, he has been continuously denied the right to an important luxury colloquially known as "jacking off". Naturally, it only makes sense as to why Tomoki was feeling very frustrated up to the current moment at hand.
Speaking of the current moment "at hand", Tomoki of course made his way to the nearest bathroom, grabbed a porn magazine, and put his own hand to work. An acute observer outside the door could possibly have heard some characteristic giggling from Tomoki enjoying himself, then silence accompanied by a series of soft splashing noises characteristic of being denied this basic pleasure for an extended period of time. Tomoki then finished other important business in the bathroom and proceeded to flush, looking significantly more calm and less irritable.
In the meantime, Ikaros had completed cleaning up after breakfast, and briefly observed Nymph absorbed in Farm Sonata, a soap opera that Nymph never seemed to grow bored with. The sight of Farm Sonata reminded Ikaros of her conversation with Nymph where they discussed the meaning of love and proposals, and subsequently reminded Ikaros of the feelings she harbored for Tomoki.
"Nymph, how would you cheer up Master when he's upset? I still feel like I don't know what makes Master happy."
"I wouldn't know either Alpha, although he seems pretty happy when he just gets to do whatever he pleases. He even tells us that we should decide for ourselves what to do. It frustrates me too because he rarely asks for us to do anything important for him, but for me it seems he doesn't mind me eating snacks and watching TV."
"The problem for me is, I want to do more things with Master, but I'm afraid he will get angry."
"Maybe you should just tell him that yourself. I'm pretty sure he'll be nice and understanding about it. If Tomoki really didn't like us, I think he would just tell us to leave or self-destruct."
Suddenly, an electronic device from Nymph's location started beeping.
"Oh, looks like Sugata wants me to help him with something. Well look after Tomoki for me, alright Alpha? I need to check up on that idiot Delta sometime later anyway, since Tomoki will probably be worried if she isn't home sometime later."
And with that, Nymph's transparent sky blue wings became visible, and she flew off into the distance, leaving only Ikaros behind to watch over Tomoki.
Ikaros was now alone with Tomoki, who at the moment was currently in his room killing time peacefully and quietly with a nap. The significance this dawned upon her. This wasn't the first time that she had been alone with Tomoki, but to Ikaros, it very much felt like it was. Previously before Ikaros's memory and emotional restrictions were removed by Nymph, Tomoki was simply 'my Master' according to Ikaros in the very strictest sense, for she was living and breathing to receive commands and execute them. Now, after many events have transpired, Tomoki could also be described as "irreplaceable", and this is probably not limited to the strict definition of irreplaceable. The word irreplaceable would explain how Ikaros was always eager to be there for Tomoki, to protect him, share experiences with him, and die for him if necessary, even though Tomoki swore against allowing the final instance to ever occur. Ikaros of course never forgot that Tomoki promised this, and this memory among others came to overwhelm her in a way she still had no idea how to describe accurately, although a few words involuntarily escaped her lips.
"I love you..."
With nobody else around to observe, she said this on the verge of tears, her cheeks also discolored by a beautiful shade of red not unlike some of the darker bangs of her long hair. Shortly afterwards, she collected herself and decided to look around the house for more things to clean up and put back in their usual places. She removed the DVD of Farm Sonata from the DVD player, turned off the TV, and then proceeded to check the status of the bathroom.
The bathroom was mostly clean and required little on Ikaros's part to tune back to status quo, although she noticed the porn magazine that Tomoki had taken with him still remaining in the area. She picked it up and paused for a moment, remembering that these items were important to Tomoki, and then she checked the contents.
Ikaros's eyes widened as she was presented with an array of highly explicit imagery, complete with full frontal nudity and a good view of common sexual practices. Nudity alone was not a shockingly foreign concept to Ikaros, although more recently she seemed to be aware that not being exposed in public was something of a virtue. Pages turned, and Ikaros's attention was drawn to a woman servicing a content-looking man with her mouth, while fondling her own privates. Of course, the sight of a penis alone wasn't necessarily shocking to Ikaros, but seeing its interaction with a woman in such a way made her gasp. Ikaros felt her heart leap and felt other parts of her body react in a new way she couldn't describe. She cupped her left hand around her breasts, and her right hand reached to her own privates to feel them growing moist. Her hand explored her crotch, when a finger brushed against her clitoris, sending an electrifying sensation to her that made her gasp. She pulled her hand back in fear of the shocking sensation, and turned to a new page featuring the man and woman engaged in coitus. Ikaros's eyes widened yet even further, appearing frightened, yet she couldn't avert her gaze. Almost by itself, her hand moved back to her vulva. This sudden enlightenment on the anatomy of sex prompted her fingers to mimic the penetration of the penis into the vagina. Her insides were sticky with her own juices, and the stimulation to her lower regions only seemed to make her beg for more. Her nipples hardened and her other hand almost instinctively moved to attend to them. Ikaros could feel her breathing become faster and deeper. She felt like letting her voice cry out, but restrained herself wishing to not disturb Tomoki. Her hands unconsciously adapted to the sensitivity of her clitoris, and soon she started imagining Tomoki being there with her to share the experience. The whole sensation finally brought Ikaros to climax, and she let the sensation of it consume her.
Shortly afterwards, she came to, and observed her panties and parts of the floor stained by her juices. Regaining her balance, she cleaned the mess, and left the bathroom taking the porn magazine with her to deliver back to Tomoki's room.
Tomoki still appeared to be asleep as Ikaros arrived at his room. She left the porn magazine in Tomoki's closet where similar objects were stored, and then still feeling sticky from her experience earlier, she headed to the other restroom and proceeded to get herself ready to take a bath.
Completely naked now, Ikaros sat quietly in warm water, pondering the possibility of being together with Tomoki for an intimate moment. Her train of thought was interrupted as the bathroom door opened and Tomoki walked in, yawning and still in his pajamas. He took one look at her, paused, and a bulge at his waist was noticed.
"Sorry, sorry Ikaros, forgot to knock. I'll wait."
Tomoki turned around and started to hurry out the door.
"Wait, Master!"
"Eh?"
"I would...like to wash your back please!"
Both Ikaros and Tomoki fell silent for a moment. It was an unusual moment for Ikaros, given she was not known for ever asking for anything she personally wanted. Ikaros turned away from Tomoki and was blushing, while Tomoki was still frozen in place, comprehending the significance of the situation.
"If it's something you want, I guess it's okay Ikaros."
"Thank you very much...Master."
Tomoki stripped down and cautiously stepped into the bath, facing away from Ikaros. Kneeling behind Tomoki, Ikaros reached out to Tomoki's shoulders with a washcloth, her hands trembling as they got closer. As they made contact, Tomoki's face grew red. Noticing this, Ikaros drew closer to Tomoki.
"Is everything okay Master? Are you angry?"
"N...Not at all! Just...don't worry about me."
"But, I am worried Master, because I wanted to make you happy. You seem very distressed right now."
"Of course I am! The truth is you're acting unusual, and I wondered if something was the matter. I told you though that you should do what makes you happy, but I'm not sure what is going on now."
"Master...I am...very happy that I can be with you now."
Saying that, Ikaros clung to Tomoki's shoulders, her chest pressing against Tomoki's back. Blood leaked from Tomoki's nose.
"Master...I...l...love you."
Ikaros burst into tears. Dumbfounded, Tomoki turned around, blood still leaking from his nose. Before he could think clearly, he reached out and embraced Ikaros, and spent a moment holding her as she sobbed onto his shoulder.
"Master...did you really mean it when you said I could stay by your side forever?"
"I...I didn't know you felt that way but yes, I did mean it. Ever since I first met you, I never wanted to leave you alone. I don't know why, but I always felt like you seemed so vulnerable"
"But it's my job to protect you Master."
"That's nice of you, but you shouldn't be throwing your life away just to save me. You should value yourself as well. I don't want to lose you either, because I love you too."
Tomoki then suddenly released his embrace from Ikaros and backed off, looking bashful, nose still dripping with blood.
"Master, I was wondering why you haven't done perverted things with me yet, and if you would do some with me now."
Tomoki looked shocked for a moment, but collected himself and replied calmly, "Well, that's a good question. I always felt that concerning erotic things, you were very vulnerable. If you ended up with the wrong person and they took advantage of you, you would not know how to defend your own dignity. Nymph, Astrea, and Sohara are different from you in that they know how to respect themselves, so I can act like an idiot around them and not feel bad about it. But I never really felt like you understood that fully. That part of you I wanted to protect until I could teach you to respect yourself."
"Thank you Master. I...understand. Will you do perverted things with me?"
Tomoki gulped. "If you insist, I'll do it. But you must let me know if you don't like what is happening. I want to be someone who you can trust."
"I trust you Master. Please touch me how you would like."
Ikaros leaned backwards against the edge of the bathtub, leaving the front of her body completely unobstructed from Tomoki's view. Tomoki stared at her in awe. Nobody could disagree that Ikaros was certainly beautiful wearing any outfit, but before Tomoki, Ikaros appeared to him as if she were a goddess. Tomoki ran his fingers through her long flamingo pink hair and found it silky to the touch. Her skin had a heavenly shine and texture, in other words flawless. Tomoki's attention then moved towards her breasts, which were to say at the least hard to ignore given their impressive size. His hands caressed them gently, savoring the divine texture of her skin, his thumbs also rubbing across her erect nipples.
"Ah..." she gasped, eyes closed, giving an appearance of content mixed with a longing for more. She looked back up at her love, evidently taking relief in his presence. She reached out to him, begging for an embrace, to which Tomoki complied, albeit somewhat clumsily, given the confinement of their mutual act to the relatively small bathtub. She leaned her lips towards his, and slowly they both met. With some difficulty, Tomoki attempted to play around with her lips and tongue, attempting to stay balanced in a relatively precarious position with little space for solid footing while maintaining his embrace with both arms. Eventually gravity got the better of him and his balanced failed, and his weight collapsed against Ikaros, causing her to fall back into the wall with an audible bump.
"I'm sorry Ikaros! I, I didn't mean to do that, I just lost my balance. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine Master. Are you uninjured? I want to continue this please."
"As long as you give me the OK, I'm here for you. Let's move somewhere slightly less cramped."
They exited the tub, and dried each other off, looking at one another with admiration.
"Ikaros, spread your wings please."
Doing as she was told, Tomoki proceeded to start drying her wings as well. Ikaros blushed, impressed by Tomoki's undivided attention towards her. As he finished, Ikaros knelt down, gently grasping Tomoki with her spread wings, coaxing him towards her. His other head swiftly was fully alert to the probable inevitability to come as Ikaros's face drew near. Taking hold of Tomoki's member, she inserted it deep into her mouth and closed down upon it.
"Ah! You don't need to use your teeth, just move your head back and forth." He instructed her.
"My apologies, this is the first time I've ever tried anything like this. I only saw pictures of it in your magazines."
Ikaros quickly adjusted her technique to Tomoki's specifications. Looking up to his eyes, her heart rose when she saw him smiling back at her. She moved at different speeds and rhythms, observing the reaction from her love.
"That's really good" he said to her, and he patted her head in approval. Overwhelmed, Ikaros felt her eyes getting wet. Tomoki suddenly removed himself from Ikaros's mouth and then bent down to meet her face to face. Embracing him with wings and arms, she kissed him, gradually pulling him towards her closer and closer, until he was on top of her and the force of gravity pulled them both to the floor.
"Master...please insert your penis into my vagina."
"That would be called having sex, and it's something you do only with someone special. You are still certain about this?"
"I completely understand, and you are the only one I want to do this with. Please have sex with me Master."
"Alright, here it comes. Just make sure to tell me if it hurts."
Tomoki's member never felt harder than before, and slowly he brought it towards her lower lips, teasing them gently for a moment. Slowly he pushed in, and could hear his partner gasp. Tomoki moved slowly, expecting some kind of obstruction, but it never happened. Whether her hymen was lost in the turbulence of action or never designed in the first place would be a mystery to all. However he finally made his way to the end, and he saw Ikaros in tears, but smiling for the first time. It was so ever slightly, but definitely there. There was no doubt Ikaros was truly happy.
"It doesn't hurt. Please move as you wish Master."
Finding the right rhythm of movement was somewhat of a tricky process, and at first more work than a raw pleasure, but this did not deter either of them from pursuing each other's affection. Through a bit of trial and error, Tomoki worked out his balance, finding a way he could maintain sustained hip movement while having access to the rest of Ikaros's body with his hands. Eventually it was indescribably enjoyable, where lust, physical sensations, and emotions blended for a very special experience. They reached climax together, and then took a moment to simply lay there, together, with the one other they truly belonged with.
In the meantime, somewhere high in the sky, Daedalus observed from her monitor, weeping but at the same time smiling, evidently crying tears of joy.
"My eldest daughter has finally learned what it means to love and be loved. I am so proud of her. Thank you Tomoki for truly loving her."
More boredom: URL OF INDIVIDUAL REVIEWS
Anime Relations: Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
What I was trying to accomplish was finding a way to extract these kinds of links.
http://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=32895
At any rate, the easiest way to get the http://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id= part of the link is to simply write a new review. Now the trick is finding the ID number. To do that, simply look for the report button. You should get a link like this.
http://myanimelist.net/dbchanges.php?go=reportreview&id=32895
And there you have it. That's one way to find the ID number of reviews. If you ever wanted to directly link people to a review that doesn't belong to you, well I hope this helped you.

Boredom: Fun thing to do on MyAnimeList
I hope I'm not the only one who figured out how to do this, but I figured out how to view conversations between any two users on MyAnimeList.
Basically, the way MyAnimeList works is that the following link format allows it to dig up shoutouts between two different user ID numbers. For the sake of giving an example, this link will direct you to my conversations with kuroshiroi.
http://myanimelist.net/comtocom.php?id1=247229&id2=37266
Of course, the question remains what are you universally allowed to do on every profile page to find the ID numbers of individuals? The trick is simply to click on the "All Comments" link, which will give you the history of all comments a user ID number has ever received. If you were to look up my comment history for example, you would get a link like this.
http://myanimelist.net/comments.php?id=247229 <- note the ID number.
As you might be able to tell, I like abusing site mechanics in ways that are not meant to be obvious. I think it's entertaining.

Quick Impressions of Fall 2010
Anime Relations: Sora no Otoshimono, Iron Man, Kuragehime, Sora no Otoshimono Forte, Shinryaku! Ika Musume, Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
I'm bored and have nothing else to do besides school stuff. Some quick ratings on the 1-10 scale that could be subject to change as the shows progress (I don't drop shows very often, so anything here is generally going to be watched to completion at some point).
Iron Man: 5/10
A lot of people complain about how the show looks ugly in comparison to its trailer. Honestly I don't think it's that big of a deal. However the story is pretty uninspiring, and not really well tied into the Marvel Universe. Decent action scenes here and there are decent, and alone make an otherwise unremarkable show moderately interesting.
Kuragehime: 7/10
Josei and Shojos are genres I haven't familiarized myself with, so given that, I'm curious what this show has to offer as a Josei. I'm not a huge fan of the whole trap premise about said crossdresser believing it's completely normal for a guy to be dressing in womens' clothes. Besides that the main character was presented well, the opening was epic (star wars anyone?), and the topic of choice (slice of life revolving around female otaku) seems interesting.
Ore no Imouto ga Konnai Kawaii Wake ga Nai (I hated typing this out...) : 9/10
Translated as "My Little Sister Can't Possibly Be This Cute", this show is probably not what you think it is from hearing the title. It's a legit drama about an older brother whose younger sister is a fan of anime and eroge, specifically eroge featuring imouto/onii-chan relationships. I assure you though, this title really isn't all that perverted and provides interesting perspective on how otaku fit in society. Definitely worth a watch.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt: 6/10
If you checked the page for this show, I'm sure most of you have read Nyron's glowing review of the first episode. I mean at the time, he probably was right, but his review is totally outdated. Generally what it seems this show was trying to accomplish from the first episode was troll popular genres and tropes (specifically stuff from ecchi romance I assume). It does so with its more Americanized art style (quite good), and by deliberately establishing a shallow story that focuses on crude humor in ways that nobody else would dare to animate or write a script for. Certainly the first episode did that quite fine, but the subsequent episodes have proven disappointing due to the show lacking any consistency in its creativity. When the show stops being creative, it goes to being a series of misadventures that lack real cohesion or substance, and unfortunately as a comedy, it's quite unremarkable without creative crude humor (good crude humor: South Park). I would still recommend giving it a look, since it does do some unique things here and there.
Shinryaku! Ika Musume: 6/10
Unfortunately I'm lazy and only got to watching the first episode of this show. The main character is kinda dumb, arrogant, and annoying, being literally a squid girl who wants to take over the human world due to humans polluting the oceans or something. Of course, she doesn't actually know anything about the human world. I was relieved to see that the main humans she interacts with (who run a restaurant by the beach) didn't give in to her petty threats and actually put her in her place, so at least there's people who aren't going to put up with the brat routine. Art and comedy was pretty good as well, so I personally have a bit of interest in this show.
Sora no Otoshimono: Forte: 9/10
I was a fan of season one of Sora no Otoshimono (which is a legitimately good show in spite of or due to its ecchi comedy qualities). Given everything from plot/characters, animation quality, soundtrack, and mix of drama and comedy was brilliant in season one, I was pleased to see SnOF be a faithful continuation of its predecessor, starting off where season one left, yet at the same time reintroducing the fun comedy tone that season one began with. Animation quality and soundtrack are still beyond epic for this show (different EDs each episode!), and you can just tell from watching the opening for SnOF that they have a lot in store for whoever remains dedicated to the series. Don't let the silly ecchi tones of this show fool you. It is extremely deserving of praise and should be watched by all. On a small note, I am strongly convinced that the chance of a third season for this show is very high, since the manga is still ongoing and has much to offer that the OP of this show hasn't yet provided us a glimpse of.
I'm generally very easy to convince into picking up all kinds of shows if I am made aware of them. Go ahead and suggest any to me if you bothered reading this, although I really wish days lasted longer for anime watching purposes.
Iron Man: 5/10
