Anime Relations: Bubble
Bubble Home Viewing

1st June 2022

Disclaimer! For people who haven’t seen the movie yet, I may spoil some of the key plot points within the film so please read at your own discretion. If you haven’t already seen the film then I highly recommend watching it. It gets a thumbs up from me.

Lately, all I have been doing when it comes to anime movie is watching them when they come out in the cinema. This time round I was fortunate to learn that the movie I had been interested in watching for several reasons was going to be shown on Netflix. That’s right. Prime time anime movie from the comfort of your own home. Having been keeping up with the hype surrounding this show while it was in the works with the trailers and the key visuals, I decided this evening that this is the time that I am going to watch this show. It just felt right. So, I made myself a nice cup of tea, sat down with my dogs, and finally got round to sticking it on.

The first thing that truly jumps out to you in the beginning is eves music, and the visuals. Oh boy the visuals. The screen was just filled with colours, and detail. You are introduced to a few characters who of all things are doing parkour. That’s right. Ladies and gentlemen, they finally did it. Its mirror edges the anime. Well, that’s what I thought at least. That and the fact that it plays off like this indie game but in some sort of movie format. I have gone into detail beforehand now of how I like animated movies with a focused, stand-alone story so this really caught my eye. Especially the parkour its a weird concept.

In the story we learn that these characters really ought not to be where they are as it would seem this district of Japan has imploded and become some sort of unexplainable phenomenon. Due to the unique characteristics of the environment, it has become home to parkour enthusiasts. We follow teams of people who participate in games whilst some characters try to solve pieces of the puzzle as to why this phenomenon has happened. We follow our main character who not only excels in parkour but also can hear a strange song coming from the centre of where it all happened. We are later introduced to a strange character which appears out of the bubbles to save our main character. Together these characters undo this phenomenon and discover all sorts of things within one another along the way.

There are several elements of the film that really, I really like. I really like the parkour elements. I think that it is so weird that it really works well. It also helps that it was animated super nicely. One of the key moments that truly stood out to me was the part towards the end of the film where they are making there way to the tower and the character who we haven’t seen do parkour, does parkour over all these beams and he traverse the environment. The way it was animated was just super cool. It also goes without saying that the animation was amazing as well.

I do wonder what the character is up to after the film is aired. It is a strange element that always fascinates me when it comes to these types of mediums. Like I know that these are inventions by people, but I do wonder, or I would like to think past the movie. Where is that character now, and what are they doing. This film had me thinking about that.

While this anime was an enjoyable watch. Part of me is like, what the hell did I just watch? I mean, what you are essentially saying to me is that the main character is the cause of all the problems because he angered the bubbles. Alright? Why on earth were the bubbles even on earth to begin with and what is with them being able to come alive. Are they some sort of alien race or something? On top of that we get the bare minimum of information with each character, it is nice that it is evenly distributed. I don’t need to know about all the characters, but some areas left me really puzzled. Especially the main character and everything that happened at the end. I think I might have enjoyed this film a bit more had I had known exactly what was going on. Perhaps a second watch or a read up on the internet would give me a clearer picture.

Overall, this was such a good watch. I really liked for once that I could watch something huge on the small screen instead of the big one from the comfort of my own home. When I first heard about this coming out, I was keeping an eye out to see if it would come out in cinemas and whether I could go view it, so it eased my mind to learn that it was going to be on Netflix. Wit studio did a stellar job with the animation because it was just visually stunning. It was just so pleasing to the eyes. So vibrant, and bright. The music was relaxing, and I enjoyed the characters. While it wasn’t as concrete as a story that I had hoped it would be and left me puzzled at times. It is something I feel comfortable saying I would recommend watching to people. I mean you can’t really go wrong when it is literally on something probably everyone on the planet has.

The music for this film was nice and subtle. It was ambient and minimalistic which was a great addition to the environments the characters where in. It went well with the nice animation. Sometimes in this film I thought to myself. Wow. This sounds so spacey. It’s like being in out of space. There were a few things that jumped out to me which I would like to discuss bellow:

Bubble feat. Uta Eve – It is the first song that we are introduced to in the film. Man, you know when it is eve that its going to be good. I loved it when he did music in jujutsu kaizen, and it works just as well here. Its so perky and groovy which works well because these characters are constantly moving and traversing obstacles. It’s like a AMV without saying its an AMV.

Bubble – This song is played several times throughout the film and with many different renditions. Why am I not surprised to learn that the master Sawano Hiroyuki had a hand in creating the music? This tune really reminded me of the music for Tetris effect in all the right ways possible. It’s soaked in reverb and ambience. It’s all just really moving. It’s probably a track that I will come back and listen to again a few times because it is just so good.

Jaa ne, Mata ne. (じゃあね、またね。)" by Riria (りりあ。) – This is played right at the end when the credits are rolling. It’s amazing. It is really in keeping with the musical theme that is used throughout the film. These minimalistic instrumental tracks which centre around the piano. I am not quite sure what the song is about, but I think it has something to do with saying goodbye and see you later. I know nothing about Japanese, but it sounds like what the person is saying, and I have heard the phrase thrown around. This is another track that I would like to come back and revisit again a few times. I might even buy it if its possible.

That is really all I have to say about this film. I think that I have said all the things that I wanted to say. The way I will score this show will ultimately come down to two aspects. My overall enjoyment of the show and my understanding of the story. I feel like because it was a little wishy washy with a few things that I will score it a little low because for me. If I don’t understand it, then there is less potential for me to enjoy it. But that is just me. I think now I will finish up here and then perhaps go to bed. I am sleepy and I am on a high from watching the film. What more can you ask for. Once again yes. I would recommend this show to anyone. It is so easy to find where to watch it and, I think that anyone can really find some enjoyment out of the show.

7/10
