Anime Relations: Animegataris
Action: Action is about conflict. Whether with guns, blades, fists, or mysterious powers, these anime feature characters in combat - either to protect themselves or the things or people they value, or simply as a way of life.
Adventure: In these anime, characters embark on a journey to explore the world or to search for something. These wanderers travel to many places and meet new people, often encountering hardships along the way, or discovering strengths and weaknesses about themselves that are revealed throughout the adventure.
Cars: They're fast, they're sexy and they're the perfect way to get from A to B in style. They're cars! These anime showcase automobiles and the characters who interact with them, from street races to cars used in combat, to AI-controlled vehicles that have gone awry.
Comedy: These anime aim to make you laugh through satire, parody, humorous observations, slapstick scenarios, or absurd antics. Bonus points for spitting your drink all over your screen!
Dementia: Dementia Anime
Demons: Demons are non-human entities generally believed to be dark or evil in nature. If demons are a core aspect of the work, their actions - often harmful to humans - will generally be the focus. Characters may engage in fighting demons physically; may attempt exorcisms or other rituals or spells to deal with them; or may be the demons or their servants or allies, carrying out their own agendas.
Drama: Drama anime heavily emphasize their characters' emotional development. Whether by experiencing the protagonist’s emotional turmoil, viewing heated character interactions, or exploring a passionate romance, any anime that humanizes its characters through emphasizing their flaws qualifies as a Drama.
Ecchi: Constant panty shots, bouncing breasts and dubious camera angles are hallmarks of an Ecchi title. These titles are usually sexualized and designed to titillate, depicting perverted themes and focusing heavily on the female body. Nosebleeds, suspicious hand positions, faceplanting into bosoms, expressive and exaggerated body parts and other tropes characterize this genre. Ecchi is all about fanservice, while Borderline H and Smut titles focus more on sexual content
Fantasy: Fantasy anime take place in a broad range of settings influenced by mythologies, legends, or popular and defining works of the genre such as The Lord of the Rings. They are generally characterized by a low level of technological development, though fantasy stories can just as easily take place in our modern world, or in a Post-apocalyptic society where technology was buried alongside the old world. These anime also tend to feature magic or other extraordinary abilities, strange or mysterious creatures, or humanoid races which coexist with humanity or inhabit their own lands removed from ours.
Harem: A harem includes three or more characters who potentially show romantic interest in a male protagonist. The sex, gender, or orientation of the harem members is irrelevant as long as they exclusively, or at least primarily, are vying for the affections of the same individual - who may or may not reciprocate towards one, several, or none of these romantic rivals.
Hentai: Hentai Anime
Historical: The setting of a historical anime takes place at some point in Earth's past. The level of dedication to portraying the lifestyles, societies, and technologies of past periods and peoples accurately or believably can vary greatly between different works.
Horror: Horror anime create an atmosphere of unease. Like Mystery anime, they encourage viewers to learn more about their world... but there may be secrets that are better left unexplored. Through eerie music and sounds, visceral or disturbing imagery, or startling moments, works of Horror make you worry about what gruesome thing is coming next.
Josei: Josei (女性), translated as "woman", is a demographic aimed at women from late teens through adulthood. These titles tend to be more mature, often focusing on realistic situations such as work life or romance. Josei is the counterpart of Seinen, a demographic aimed at older teens and men.
Kids: Kids Anime
Magic: Magic is the use of gestures, incantations, or rituals to harness some kind of supernatural power. Characters in Magic anime tend to go by titles such as witch, wizard, mage, or sorcerer, and may be occupied with learning to harness these abilities or with finding magical relics or battling against strange entities... or other magic users.
Martial Arts: Martial Arts Anime
Mecha: Mecha are self-propelling machines that are modeled after humans; some can change into multiple, non-humanoid formats as well. They're usually controlled by an internal pilot or by remote, but are sometimes sentient beings that move autonomously. A mecha's size ranges from bulky, wearable armor to a massive, towering contraption and beyond. While mecha have a wide range of applications, such as making manual labor easier, they are most commonly portrayed as heavily-armed war machines.
Military: These anime have a strong military presence, be it on a national or intergalactic level, or showcase characters that are in the military.
Music: These anime are all about the appreciation or performance of music, no matter the genre, or the skill level any musicians involved. Music lives in the soul of these characters!
Mystery: Mystery anime focus on unresolved questions, and the efforts of characters to discover the answers to them. Whether curious and deadly events are afoot, or some part of the world itself is strange or inexplicable, or someone's past or identity seems strangely shrouded, these characters are set on learning the truth.
Parody: These anime imitate well known genres, styles or characters in an exaggerated, comedic manner to poke fun at them.
Police: Police Anime
Psychological: Psychological anime delve into mental or emotional states of a character in the midst of a difficult situation, letting you observe them change as tension increases. Internal monologues are a key feature, allowing narration to delve into a character's mind, revealing their innermost ideas and motivations - even as they may be driven to the brink of sanity.
Romance: These anime showcase the joys and hardships of falling in love, whether a schoolgirl has an unrequited crush on her senpai, a Love Triangle occurs within a group of friends, or rivals become lovers through competition or their intense passion for each other.
Samurai: Samurai Anime
School / School Life These anime showcase events that occur on a daily basis in a school, whether from the perspective of a student or of a teacher. Having fun in the classroom, attending School Clubs, spending time with friends or doing daily chores are frequent themes in these anime.
Sci-Fi: Sci-fi, or science fiction, is a speculative genre which builds on imagination. Sci-fi anime ask, "what if things were different?" They explore a new world, whether it's the world of the future or past, a present Earth with a changed history, a land that was previously unknown, or another planet entirely. The genre commonly features humanity's inquisitiveness and innovation, as they grapple with new technologies, new societies, or new frontiers in Outer Space.
Seinen: Seinen (青年), translated as "youth", is a demographic aimed at men from late teens to adulthood who understand kanji.
Shoujo: Shoujo (少女), translated as "young woman", is a demographic aimed at teenage girls. The most iconic and influential Shoujo character designs come from the early 20th century, where girls and boys alike were drawn with huge eyes. Shoujo is the counterpart of Shounen, a demographic aimed at boys and young men.
Shoujo Ai: Yuri is a genre that depicts homosexual relationships between women. Japan typically uses this single category for all forms of these relationships, sexual or not. In the West, the term Shoujo-ai categorizes stories that focus on the emotional aspects of the relationships, while Yuri categorizes more of the sexual aspects and explicit content. As Anime-Planet's audience is mostly based in the West, we use the Western definition for both Yuri and Shoujo-ai.

SoL: Slice of life, or "nichijou" in Japanese, refers to events that occur on a daily basis such as getting ready for the day, light chores, enjoying a hobby, or preparing meals. These events differ depending on setting, but above all else are considered to be ordinary, everyday actions that don’t always follow a central plot. The related tags School Life and Work Life focus on ordinary events that take place in a school or work setting, respectively.
Space: Space Anime
Sports: These anime delve into the world of competitive Sports, ranging from team-based to individual participants. From Baseball or Basketball, to track and field or combat-based sports, these works focus on the athletes and those around them who show their support.
Super Power: Superpowers are special abilities that the majority of modern humans do not possess. Unlike skills that are studied and learned through traditional means, these abilities are inherent strengths that arise from genetic differences, random accidents, or exposure to strange phenomena. These anime often focus on combat between these individuals or against outside threats, as well as the social stigma that comes from having these powers.
Supernatural: Also called paranormal, supernatural events are those modern science has difficulty explaining. Supernaturally oriented titles are often steeped in folklore, myth, or Urban Legend. They may involve strange or inexplicable phenomena, Psychic Powers or emanations, and/or ghosts or other fantastic creatures. Supernatural events are those that lie at the edge of our understanding - they are easy to believe in, but difficult to prove.
Thriller: Thrillers are characterized by tension. These anime typically set up a complex story with a variety of dangerous elements, plot twists, and possible outcomes, and attempt to resolve it in a manner that keeps the level of suspense high, keeping you guessing as to what might be coming next.

Adult Couples: These anime feature romantic or sexual relationships between two adults.
Afterlife: These manga focus on the afterlife. The manga might take place in Heaven or Hell, focus on purgatory and the judging of souls, or other topics that cover life after death.
Age Gap: These anime showcase a relationship where the characters are in two different age groups, based on societal norms. While not always the case, these characters sometimes must overcome challenges or societal stigma associated with the Age Gap.
Agriculture: These anime explore the occupations, issues and lifestyles related to agriculture and farming. They frequently take place on a farm or in the countryside, and follow protagonists that learn or practice skills such as tilling the earth or taking care of barnyard animals.
Animal Characteristics: These anime feature human-like beings that possess animal characteristics, such as animal ears, tails, or other body parts not normally found on people. Catgirls are a common example.
Anime Industry: These anime explore anime from the industry or consumer side. Common themes include the creative and design process, sound design or voice acting, editing or meeting deadlines, distribution and marketing, or the culture of anime consumption.
Bar: These anime predominantly take place in a bar.
Baseball: Baseball is the focus of these anime. Training and competing in tournaments or championships are common themes in sports titles, as well as team spirit, or being an underdog who goes against the odds to succeed.

Boarding House: Characters in these anime live in a boarding house: a large building or complex that houses multiple individuals or renters, usually with shared areas for the community. Off-campus, shared dormitory buildings qualify for the tag as well, as long as the housing situation is similar to a traditional boarding house.
Boarding School:These anime take place at a boarding school: an institution that acts as both a dormitory and a school for students who live on-premises.
Bodyguards: These anime feature bodyguards: personnel hired or appointed to protect a specific person or group of people.
Breaking the 4th Wall: These anime feature characters that are aware that they are part of a story, and at times, pause to speak to the audience.
Brother Complex: These anime feature Siblings with a Brother Complex: they want nothing more than to ensure the well-being and happiness of their beloved brother, often to an unhealthy or even romantic degree. They're known to be over-protective and jealous of their brother's suitors.
Bullying: Bullying is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively dominate others. These anime, which typically take place in a school setting, focus on bullying as a primary theme.
Cafe: These anime predominantly take place in a cafe.
Cannibalism: These anime contain cannibalism: the act of a species eating all or part of another individual of their species.
Cats: Cats are the focus of these anime, whether they're domesticated, lions, or any other type of feline! Common themes in these anime include pet care, or the daily life of a cat from the cat's perspective.
Cheats: Characters in these manga have gained a way to cheat the system through fantastical means, whether the cheat breaks the rules of a game world, the real world, or an isekai fantasy world. Examples include: a game-based levelling system that appears to only them in the real world; finding or being given a game-breaking item; acquiring an ability to level up faster than usual, or to instantly access new skills; or having access to knowledge from a past life through Reincarnation. Special, overpowered abilities aren’t considered cheats if they are game-sanctioned - for those manga, see Overpowered Main Characters.
Chibi: Chibi is Japanese slang for someone small and cute. In Western anime fandom, the term is used to describe characters who are "super deformed", usually with giant heads and tiny bodies for comedic effect. In these anime, several or all of the characters frequently appear in a Chibi state.
Childcare: The main characters in these anime provide care for children, either through the industry or individually. They might be a single parent, or suddenly become an adopted parent or guardian for a child, or work as a nanny or caregiver.
Childhood Friends: These anime primarily focus on one or more childhood friends. The friends might have reunited after a long period of time apart, or they might be characters who start a relationship in a Romance anime. A Childhood Promise might also be involved.
College: These anime take place in a college, a university, or a post-secondary school.
Coming of Age: Coming-of-age refers to the process by which a child becomes an adult. These anime showcase characters who make the transition naturally, or are forced to grow due to outside pressures. Learning about one's self, about others, about the world, and what society requires from adults, are all common themes of coming-of-age works.
Conspiracy: These anime feature an organization of two or more people executing an unlawful or harmful secret plan. Conspiracies can be anything from large-scale government coverups to several people conspiring to make someone else's life miserable.
Contemporary Fantasy: Contemporary Fantasy is a subgenre of Fantasy that takes place in the present day. In these stories, Magic or magical creatures might exist in the real world, but the general populace is unaware of their existence or misunderstands their true nature. Anime that take place in an urban setting are also considered to be Urban Fantasies.
Cooking: Cooking is the focus of these food-themed anime, whether the characters within attend a Culinary School, work in a Restaurant or are simply passionate home cooks. These anime may offer step-by-step Recipes for various dishes or plating techniques.
Countryside: These anime are set in the countryside, an area outside of cities and removed from their influence. Communities are generally rural and pastoral in nature, with customs and dialects that could be seen as strange or antiquated. Some anime showcase the contrast between city and country life, showing how city folk struggle in adapting to a slower way of living.
Coworkers: This anime features coworkers: people who work together at a job, usually at the same level in the company hierarchy. The coworkers might be shown in their day-to-day Work Life, or spending their time together with drinks after work, or are shown to be involved in a Workplace Romance.
Crossdressing: Unlike Gender Bender titles where a character undergoes a complete physical sex change, these anime showcase characters who crossdress for a secretive reason, whether it's to attend a single-sex school or to acquire a job targeted at a specific gender. The secretive, crossdressing element must be the focus of these anime to receive the tag.
Crude: These anime use lowbrow humor to make you laugh, most commonly by sex jokes, toilet humor, bodily functions or crass racial stereotypes. If these anime ask you to pull their finger you should politely decline.
Culinary School: Characters in these anime attend a culinary school to learn how to cook or bake, with an emphasis on cooking techniques and proper plating.
Cyborgs: Harder, better, faster, stronger. Cyborgs are organic beings enhanced by mechanical prosthetics, granting them abilities beyond those of mere mortals. Where does the man end and the machine begin?
Dark Fantasy: Dark fantasy is a subgenre of Fantasy that incorporates grittier and more mature themes. These anime often contain elements of Horror, Graphic Sex, or Explicit Violence.
Delinquents: A delinquent is a young person, generally of school age, who has a problem with following social rules or the word of authority figures. These anime typically focus on the group dynamics of a delinquent's gang of friends, or the misadventures they get into thanks to their attitudes and actions.
Detectives: Detectives are people who investigate crimes. These anime feature characters who work the streets, analyze evidence from crime scenes, or research past records, using logic and reasoning to discover who did what, and how. Detectives may be members of a police force, employed by some other organization, or private citizens with a desire to learn the truth.
Domestic Abuse: These anime contain scenes of domestic abuse where characters commit acts of violence against their family members, spouse, romantic partner, or other people they live with.
Dragons: Dragons are huge and mighty serpentine mythological creatures, often seen as being magical in nature. These anime center on the impact of dragons - whether reimagined, extinct, or living and breathing alongside humans, and may feature dragons as major characters.
Dungeon: Dungeons are the focus of these manga. The setting might take place in the dungeon, or the story might be related to one, such as dungeon management or creation. These manga typically follow adventurers who traverse the floors or levels of a dungeon to find treasure, to defeat monsters, or to exit it.
Earthquake: An earthquake shatters the tranquillity of these anime, whether the disaster was natural or manmade. Often these anime center on the aftermath of the event and how the characters struggle to survive.
Elemental Powers: These anime feature characters who possess elemental powers such as fire, water, wind and lightning.
Explicit Sex: These manga depict an explicit level of sexual content, indicated by one or more of the following: detailed, graphic sequences; a high frequency of sexual content, even if content isn't explicit; prevalent nudity; Fetish-based, graphic sequences; or simulated sexual acts.
Explicit Violence: These anime portray an explicit level of violence, either due to high frequency or for showing shocking, graphic acts. Common sightings include excessive blood, body explosions, broken bones, internal organs, torture, cannibalism, or detailed, disturbing sequences of other types of violence.
Fashion: These anime focus on the fashion industry. Common themes include design, creation, modelling, marketing, or appreciation of clothing, makeup and accessories.
Fetish: Characters in these anime have an unusual desire or sexual fetish that falls outside of the social norm. Often deviant, these obsessions can manifest in a variety of forms such as Voyeurism, BSDM, sadomasochism, or an unnatural preference for feet.
Food and Beverage: These anime relate to food and beverage, from taking place in a Restaurant, Cafe or Culinary School, to showcasing step-by-step cooking instructions and techniques, to featuring culinary competitions that pit would-be chefs or bakers against each other.
Forest: These anime fully or mostly take place in a forest: a large area dominated by trees. Forests can vary greatly based on climate, from woods filled with tall fir trees, to tropical jungles with dense vegetation.
Gambling: You win some, you lose some. Gambling is a strong focus in these anime, from casino adventures to backroom games. Characters often gamble day in and day out for a variety of stakes: money, fame, or in the case of High Stakes Games, even more sinister consequences.
Gag: Gag comedies are usually episodic, focusing on a specific pun, joke, situation, or character, for a series of episodes for anime, or one or more chapters for manga. The breakdown is similar to a single sketch in a stand-up comedy show. 4-koma manga typically use a single strip for a single joke.

Ghosts: These anime feature protagonists who are Ghosts: Supernatural beings who have passed on to the Afterlife. Ghosts are usually non-corporeal and translucent, unless they're possessing someone.

Gods: These anime feature deities - gods or goddesses - as main characters. The gods may be based on a form of mythology such as Greek or Norse, or they may be fictional deities. Anime with gods may focus on a God-Human Relationship.
Guilds: These manga feature characters who are members of guilds. They may be adventurers, thieves, magicians, or other professions associated with fantasy or RPG settings. Guild members often live and work together, making a living by hunting monsters or going on quests that frequently lead to adventures.
Gynophobia: Gynophobia is defined as an irrational fear of women. In these anime, characters with the disorder have extreme reactions to the women in their lives, from panicking to having an intense allergic reaction to anything in between.
High Stakes Games: Characters in these stories play a 'game' with serious consequences. Fame, fortune, power, life: any or all of these may be won or lost according to the rules of competition. The stakes and the rules may be agreed upon by parties involved, or imposed on them by an external force; either way, not following them will usually have severe consequences for the transgressor. Those who take part in the game will generally be forced to play until they win... or lose.
Hotels and Inns: Hotels, inns or ryokans are the focus of these anime. Characters, often Innkeepers, manage day to day operations or other aspects of running the facility.
Idols: Idols are heavily promoted multimedia stars. In Japan, they are adored by the masses and frequently perform at concerts or events; however, the idol industry is both competitive and harsh, and many involved have short-lived careers. These anime showcase all there is about the profession, from training, to being scouted by talent agents, to management and production.
Illness: These anime feature characters who struggle with a debilitating health condition, whether they're diagnosed with a terminal illness, a mental health issue, or a lifelong condition that impacts their way of life.
Inheritance: Characters in these anime receive an inheritance, typically from a relative who has passed away, and gifted them with riches, a mansion, or some other form of property. Common anime themes include receiving the inheritance, such as having to move to a new house; stipulations about the inheritance, such as having to marry; or squabbles amongst family members to split up the inheritance.
Isekai: A person is suddenly whisked away to a strange world - be it an alien landscape, a parallel dimension, an unfamiliar time in history, a virtual reality they can't escape from, or a number of other settings. Common themes include trying to discover how to get home, coming to terms with a new life in a new place, or political or social involvement with the local populace.
Island: These anime fully or mostly take place on an island, whether the land mass is in the sea or floating in the air.
Isolated Society: These anime feature a society that is physically isolated from the world. The populace might live inside of a walled or domed city, or are limited to a small island. Typically, the society is unaware of what exists outside of their borders in the Outside World, or are forbidden to go there.
Iyashikei: Iyashikei (癒し系) is a sub-genre of Slice of Life anime that is designed to have a "healing" effect on the viewer. Iyashikei anime are typically Episodic, have little to no conflict, and showcase the characters' peaceful lives. These titles often take place in the peaceful Countryside, but can occur in a variety of other locations such as a home, workplace, or school. Common features include mellow atmospheres, soothing soundtracks, and gorgeous background art.
Japanese Mythology: Japanese mythology refers to any number of stories involving kami (deities or spirits), oni (ogres), and/or youkai (fey-like creatures). Anime commonly include ideas based on the creation myth, featuring Amaterasu, Susano-o, Izanagi and Izanami; tales of incredible beasts such as the serpentine Orochimaru; or stories of mortal deities or folk heroes like Momotarou.
Lifestyle Change: Characters in these anime undergo a significant lifestyle change. They might be a commoner who becomes royalty, are rich and become poor, or have a sudden change in popularity. They might move from the city to the country, have a significant job change such as leaving the mafia or embark on a new career, or experience other personal changes such as a debilitating injury, becoming a parent, or coming to terms with their sexuality.
Love Confession: Kokuhaku (告白) is the act of declaring your love to another in hopes of dating them. In these Romance anime, the protagonist wishes to confess to their crush, but anxiety, planning, and other factors might stand in the way!
Love Triangle: A love triangle is a set of interconnected romantic relationships between three people. These anime focus on the trials and tribulations of characters who may at first be in love, uninterested, or completely oblivious, as they untangle their feelings, make their choices, and try to win the heart of their beloved. More complex sets of relationships involving more than three people, sometimes called love polygons, may also be included.
Magic School: Characters in these anime attend a Magic School where they learn about the magical arts.
Magical Girl: These anime feature young, generally school-aged girls as defenders of love, life, and justice. They typically stumble upon the source of a magical power, or are granted one by allies that are aware of evil forces on the rise. Often by using a special item or with the help of a magical familiar, these characters are able to transform into an alter-ego ready to cause mischief or fight their foes.
Maids: These anime showcase maids: women - or rarely men - who are employed to help cook, clean, run errands, or anything else that their master requires. The anime might also feature a Master-Servant Relationship. Alternately, maids might be employees of a theme cafe where cosplay is required to please customers.
Manga Industry: These anime explore manga from the industry or consumer side. Common themes include the creative and design process, editing or meeting publishing deadlines, distribution and marketing, or the culture of manga consumption.
Mature Romance: These Romance anime typically feature relationships between Adult Couples or College students. Unlike high school romances, these stories typically feature more mature themes that adults experience in relationships.
Medieval: These anime take place in a setting thematically similar to Europe in the middle ages. Castles, moats and small villages adorn the landscape, and knights, military forces and feudal kingdoms rule the populace.
Melancholy: These anime have an atmosphere of pensive sadness. They may explore themes such as Loneliness, depression, or tragedy.
Military School: Characters in these anime attend a military academy. They're often found in the classroom or training in the field, whether they're attending the school to become a mecha pilot or a member of the armed forces.
Mind Games: In these anime, characters use words and actions to manipulate others psychologically. Whether it be for their own amusement, to gain an advantage or for darker purposes, the characters in these anime use manipulation to get others to do their bidding.
MMORPG: These anime are about an MMORPG: a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The setting might take place inside of the game if it's a virtual reality, or the story might focus on the MMORPG's existence and use instead.
Monsters: Monsters are fantastical creatures that appear in a wide variety of genres. They're classifed most easily by what they aren't; Vampires, youkai and a variety of other characters are separate categories. Monsters can be cute and cuddly sidekicks, scary beasts or anything in between, as long as they are fantastical, not found in nature, and don't fit another character classification.

Neighbors: This anime features neighbors: people who live in separate apartments, or in separate rooms in a Boarding House, or live in neighboring houses.
Newly Co-ed School: Characters in these anime attend a newly co-ed school that was recently all-girls or all-boys.
Non-Human Protagonists: These anime feature protagonists who are not human. They may be animals, monsters, catgirls, deities, space aliens, sentient robots or any other fantastical or supernatural beings. These stories may center solely on a non-human protagonist, or feature one who is paired with a human comrade or romantic partner.
Nudity: These titles have a mild amount of nudity, either because of Ecchi or light fanservice, mild Sexual Content, or simply a one-off shower scene or hot springs visit.
Ocean: These anime take place on or within an ocean.
OP Main Characters: These anime have overpowered protagonists, or overpowered main antagonists. Overpowered anime characters easily rise above the conflicts of their story. When competition is involved, they are typically undefeatable, using their intelligence, fighting prowess or pure raw power to win with ease, always staying ten steps ahead. They might be overpowered because of Cheats.
Orphans: These anime feature orphans: characters that were orphaned when both of their birth parents died. They may be Siblings who were orphaned together.
Otaku Culture: The word otaku describes a person with obsessive interests, usually in the realm of anime and manga fandom. Characters in these anime may be shown visiting stores to acquire new merchandise, cosplaying as their favourite heroes or heroines, meeting and trading Doujins at fan conventions, or arguing online about works from their favourite authors or studios.
Outside World: These anime feature a world where a part of it is foreign and unknown, such as a forbidden area outside of an isolated community, or a mysterious dungeon or pit that has not been fully explored. These mysterious areas compel curious or adventurous people to want to see for themselves.

Person in a Strange World: Characters in these anime find themselves in a world very different from their own. They may have been suddenly whisked away to a strange world, become stuck in a video game, or are trapped in a different time period. Common themes include trying to discover how to get home, coming to terms with a new life in a new place, or political or social involvement with the local populace. Physical Abuse: Characters in these anime suffer Physical Abuse at the hands of others, whether they’re Bullied and beat up by a classmate, struck by a relative, sexually abused, or something worse.
Pigs: Pigs are the focus of these anime, whether they're the classic barnyard type or a wild boar.
Political: Political issues concern people on a broad scale, and generally relate to a region's government or its relationship with other territories. These anime focus on anything from political campaigns and policies to international politics, wars and treaties.
Post-apocalyptic: The world was nearly wiped clean of life, whether through nuclear war, an alien invasion, a natural disaster, or a pandemic. From the ashes of the old world, some societies struggle to endure and rebuild, while others live new, agrarian lifestyles and the old days are merely legends.
Prehistoric: These anime take place in the prehistoric era, or have a prehistoric aesthetic. Cavemen, Dinosaurs or ancient beasts that predate human history populate the landscape, or modern characters may arrive through magic or Time Travel.
Prison: These anime take place in a prison.
Prophecy: These manga focus on a prophecy. Characters may possess the gift of prophecy, are trying to fulfill a prophecy, or are attempting to stop one from coming true. Some may rebel against getting involved, while others may be affected by a prophecy whether they like it or not. Common prophecies include the coming of a destined hero, the rise or fall of a great evil, or the foretelling of an event that will have far-reaching consequences.
Proxy Battles: In these anime, protagonists use and control creatures, robots or other beings to fight on their behalf.
Psychic Powers: Psychic powers are extraordinary abilities that allow those that have them to project their mind and will onto the world. Common examples include additional or heightened senses; telekinesis, or general manipulation of physical objects; mentally projecting oneself into space or time; or manifesting physical objects from distant places or from nothing at all.
PVE: These High Stakes Games anime are PVE: player versus environment. The game rules dictate that players don't battle each other, they must instead fight a common enemy or deal with an external force. Not to be confused with PVP anime (player versus player).
PVP: These High Stakes Games anime are PVP: player versus player. The game rules dictate that one or more players are the enemy, pitting the characters against each other. PVP anime are often a Battle Royale setup where players must kill each other off until only one remains. Not to be confused with PVE anime (player versus environment).
Reincarnation: Reincarnation is the concept that a person's essence continues after their body dies, and may be reborn into a new one after their lifetime. These manga focus on the theme of reincarnation, featuring characters who either have been reborn into a new life-cycle, or may be carrying the spirits of past lives as well as having their own personality.
Restaurants: These anime predominantly take place in a restaurant.
Reverse Harem: Reverse Harem Anime
Romantic Comedy: Romantic comedies, also known as romcoms, are a type of comedy anime focused on relationships. Typically, they feature characters who meet and ultimately fall in love, but can sometimes focus on already-coupled characters whose relationships grow throughout the story. The progression of their relationship is usually what provides the comedy aspect; for example, through the obstacles the couple faces such as a love triangle, or through mismatched personalities, misunderstandings, or other common tropes.
Royalty: These anime feature royalty: members of a royal family such as King, Queen, Prince, or Princess.
RPG: These anime were designed to feel like or parody or a role-playing game (RPG), and aren't necessarily based on a specific video game. Common themes include characters that level up, visit armories and shops to purchase equipment, use disposable items, and fight monsters.
Satire: These comedy anime are parodies that use irony, humor, and exaggerations to criticize or mock culture, politics, or other topical issues.
School Club: Characters in these anime are passionate or begrudging participants in a school club. Typical themes include recruitment, day-to-day activities (be they relevant to the club's purpose or not), participating in school activities and celebrations, and going on field trips as a bonding experience for the members.
Self-Harm: These anime contain scenes of self-harm: the act of purposely cutting, burning, maiming, or otherwise injuring oneself.
Senpai-Kouhai Relationship: These anime focus on a relationship between students who are in different grade levels. Upperclassmen are known as "senpai" (先輩), while underclassmen are referred to as "kouhai" (後輩). Notice me, senpai!
Sexual Abuse: An act of sexual assault occurs in these manga.
Ship: These anime primarily take place onboard a ship that sails the seas. The craft might be a cruise ship, a freighter, or a military vessel.
Showbiz: These anime are all about show business. Characters are involved in the industry as actors, idols, or other talents.
Siblings: These anime showcase siblings that live together, work together, or travel together to accomplish a common goal. The siblings' relationship or bond is the primary focus of these anime.
Single Parent: These anime feature characters who are the sole caregivers of a child. They might be the biological parent, an adopted parent, or simply a primary caretaker. These single parents are responsible for all the tasks involved with childcare, either alone, or with the aid of friends, family or a potential new love interest who serves as a secondary parental figure.
Soccer: Soccer, also known as football, is the focus of these anime. Training and competing in Tournaments or championships are common themes in sports titles, as well as team spirit, or being an underdog who goes against the odds to succeed.
Star-Crossed Lovers: Characters in these anime are in love, but because of fate, family loyalties, timing, or other reasons, their relationship seems doomed to fail.
Steampunk: Steampunk describes an alternate timeline based on the industrial revolution, where steam-powered technology like airships, robots and appliances are commonplace. Invention and imagination are common themes in these anime, and elaborate, mechanical devices with cogs, gears, wheels and lenses are found everywhere, even in the outfits of ordinary people.
Student Council: These anime feature characters who are a part of their school's student council. Elected by the student body, student councils represent their peers when it comes to school affairs. Typical themes in these anime include student council elections, planning of school events such as culture festivals, or interactions between the council members.
Student-Teacher Relationship: These anime focus on a relationship - usually forbidden and taboo - between a teacher and his or her student.
Sudden Girlfriend Appearance: In these anime, a leading lady suddenly enters the protagonist’s life and often, but not always, desires to become his girlfriend or wife through any means necessary.
Suicide: Suicide, the act of killing one’s self, is attempted in these anime, or is a central theme overall. Suicide scenes attempts may contain graphic or upsetting images of violence and self-harm.
Super Heroes: These anime feature characters with extraordinary and often superhuman Superpowers. With these abilities, they fight evil to protect society and uphold their moral code. Superheroes are frequently Masked Heroes who wear costumes to hide their identities.
Survival: Characters are threatened with danger or death from the very environment in which they live. Whether through starvation, dehydration, asphyxiation, the power of the elements, the threat of attack from deadly wildlife, or fantastic environmental circumstances, the world around the cast poses at least as much of a threat to life as does any humanoid enemy.
Swordplay: Anime with swordplay focus on combat between sword-wielders. Whether duels, skirmishes, battles, or wars; taking place in the past, present, or future - or even somewhere else entirely - if disputes are settled by the blade and it happens on a regular basis, swordplay is at work.
Time Travel: Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time, usually with an invention called a time machine. The science is loosely based in theoretical physics, with quantum mechanics and wormholes as common themes. These titles either focus on the concept of time travel or include time travel, often involving a Person in a Strange World.
Tournaments: Tournaments are competitions on a large scale, in which many challengers or teams may take part in the hopes of winning grand acclaim or prizes. These anime feature characters who intend to succeed in one or more Tournaments, and may focus on their preparations for entry or training as well as individual matches in whatever style of competition the series favors.
Urban Fantasy: Urban Fantasy is a subgenre of Fantasy that typically takes place in an urban setting. These anime might be a Contemporary Fantasy set in the present day, or they might take place in the future, or in the historical past. Urban fantasies are set primarily in the real world but contain fantasy aspects.
Video Game Industry: These anime explore the video game industry, from typical console games, to mobile games, or even erogames. Common themes include the creative and design process, development lifecycle, or Voice Acting.
Violence: These anime have a mild amount of violence, such as weapon fights that result in bodily harm, deaths, or dangerous explosions.
Virtual Reality: A virtual reality is an immersive, computer-simulated environment that can be accessed using a computer, through a video game console, or even jacked into directly. These manga either take place inside a virtual reality, or might showcase a world where a virtual reality is commonplace.
Voice Acting: These anime feature protagonists that are voice actors for TV, movies, games or other media formats.
War: In these anime, two or more factions are in the midst of an adversarial conflict. They take place on a number of scales, from minor conflicts between two villages, to country-wide, to intergalactic between worlds. Wars occur for many reasons, from racial tension to political maneuvering to plain old fun and games, with consequences ranging from genocide to loss of land and power.
Weak to Strong: Characters in these anime are weak, but through determination, hard work, and rigorous training, they become strong and masters of their field, whether it's martial arts, a job class in a game, or a hobby such as sports. These protagonists might even become powerful enough to be Overpowered Main Characters.
Writers: Writers have a career or hobby related to literary works. They might be an author that works in the Manga Industry or Novel Industry, or they might write poetry, draft news articles, or simply write for fun.
Work Life: These anime showcase the daily life of an employee, whether they are a waitress, a salaryman or beyond. Office politics, relationships, daily duties or little things the characters do to pass the time are frequent themes in these titles.
Youkai: These anime feature Youkai: Supernatural spirits that originate from Japanese Folklore. Common examples include the Kappa, Kitsune, and Yuki-onna.
Zombies: Zombies can take many forms: from slow, shuffling and mindless undead, to relatively normal-looking humans, to anything in between. What they have in common is they're reanimated corpses brought back to life through an outside force. Who's hungry for some brains?!
