Aa! Megami-sama! (TV)
Comical Romance
2005 14+ Is my recommendation because of some adult situations although those really aren’t heavy, just scantily clad comical situations. This show is like many others in the regards that a boy who has been unlucky for much of his life suddenly ends up living with a beautiful girl and yet he still can’t admit his feelings…way to go dumb ass. The twist this time, the girl is a goddess. That’s right and god has a machine running the earth for him. Anyway, this is a comical romance so things always get in the way including his friends and sister and her two goddess sisters and her goddess friends, and some demons, and the end of the world…well you get the picture. This happy show is set in modern day Japan during the college years, and the main character is nuts for driving machines so expect mechanical adventures as well as some racing all though no where near enough of that takes place. On to the technical stuff, the animation is very natural and clear…no fancy stuff just simple and elegant. The sound during the show isn’t bad at all and the music usually matches the mood but in an general sort of way, this show has its best music in its openings and endings. The characters are good and even evolve a little during the progress of the series but again this is a show where the guy never has much in guts so that portion is agonizingly slow. Finally this show does move at a good clip sometimes getting bogged down in the testing of the relationship. Would have been better if the relationship moved forward in a healthy non stall way, also would have liked to see the motor club do some more. Downloaded Episodes: 24 |

Ayashi no Ceres
Action, Fantasy, Romance
2000 15+ due to brief nudity, graphic violence, and adult situations. The plot is set in present day Japan were a brother and sister are just turning 16 which in their family means great changes await them. Basically this family line is very old and the original two members like to reincarnate themselves once in a while which brings about bloody clash. Think celestial powers and angels. This is a love story though so expect tender sequences. The action we do see isn’t prolonged though so don’t look for knock down drag out fights. The character complexity dispite the complex situation that surrounds each individual is average and the animation style is Evangelion-esk just without the mind trip. The music in this series is good, I especially like the opening music. The idea behind this one is nice but used a lot, the music is redeeming as is the comic relief character. The action could have been drawn out more, they have a hard time defining the magnitude of Ceres’s power, and the series was too short. The angle mass suicide was an interesting touch. Bastard!! Ankoku no Hakaishin
Fantasy
1992 Not for children. Contains nudity, sexual situations, and a moderate amount of blood and gore. This is a 6 part anime which is probably a good thing. Setting is a post apocalyptic world which has decided that castles, swords, knights, and sorcery was really the right way to go after all. Plot is the classic bad guy wants to destroy the world vs the goo…somewhat goo…ok complete bastard who doesn’t want the world to end. The characters aren’t really developed well which is a fault of a 6 ep series but the background story helps tie them together. The sound track isn’t original and the animation is a hair above standard for the time it was created. Still the story line isn’t something to completely toss out, I think that this could have gone another 6 eps the way it was. “This girls chastity is 100%...um well 80% perfect anyway.” Downloaded Episodes: 6 |

Claymore
Claymore:
Supernatural, Action, Fantasy 2007 Age 17+ is recommended due largely to the gore. Best described as a mixture of the insanity displayed in Gantz and the grit of Berserk!, Claymore thrusts the watcher into an age of swards, peasants, and demons. Warriors called Claymores (Half human / Half Yoma) travel the country slaying demons (Yoma; suspect a play on Yokai) by request of township. Yoma are crafty blood thirsty creatures capable of perfectly disguising themselves as humans (living or dead) and while humans can destroy them it is rare that one ever does. Claymores are trained not to show compassion to anyone and in return they expect and get none. Claire the main character of Claymore breaks from this tradition and befriends a boy who’s family had been destroyed by a Yoma this boy proves to be mildly useful but more or less not important. Together they travel the country side until broken up by a fellow Claymore, whom by their standards is among the best, Claire escapes but not without loosing her arm. By fortune she runs into a Claymore from a previous generation who has gone into hiding, this claymore trains her to fight and begin her journey toward avenging her own slain friend. The plot and the story flow pretty well and though there are some nice twists don’t expect too much from what I label as a gore fest. As far as character development goes I’d say the curve here is pretty linear and once more does nothing to make this anime more than standard. This is not to say that Claire doesn’t become kick ass or doesn’t learn a good deal, it’s just that there is about as much interest in the softer emotions as there is in a typical football locker room. Animation styling is not typical of Japanese animation which is good considering that the people being portrayed here are easily westerners. Again though, the animation is nothing special. Finally the development pace of this story does not leave you wanting; the pace is fast and the big battles are drawn out respectfully. 7,6.5,5,6.5,8 ….6.6/10…this is mindless killing with a hint of subplot. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Mecha, Drama, Alternate History 2007 Age 15+ for bits of nudity, action violence, and some suggestive content. When the writers began with this show they asked the question "To defeat evil would you become evil itself?". Cross tactics with Gundam Seed and say the British Empire won the revolutionary war and you’d have a show like this one. Basically the British Empire is on a conquest for world domination with the last holdouts being China and some other smaller nations. In Japan/ Area 11 the British have been in power for 7 years and the rights of the conquered Japanese taken away. An active terrorist organization holds out hope to spark a revolution and take back Japan but with the Brits having far superior technology there really is no hope. That is until Lelouch is given the power to command anyone. Lelouch disguised as Zero then rushes to aid the terrorists with his brilliant tactics and seething hatred for the emperor/ father who tossed him out and may have had a hand in killing his mother and crippling his sister. Suzaku an old friend of Lelouch and an ace mech pilot is also a key player here and true to Gundam form both are secretly pitted against one another with the fate of a nation in the balance. This show though resembling much in the way of Gundam’s tech races and friend vs. friend theme has a much more modern and realistic aspect to it. Ok lets do the break down animation style is not extremely detailed but more of a nice average appearance. The mechs look like shiny new cars despite having appendages and the people are Mcjaggar skinny with the lanky arms and legs. This appearance gives elegance to most things and grandiosity to theatrical moments. Finally the battle animation is excellent when depicting strong vs. strong. There is a great deal of character development and quality of design. The main characters are all mostly school aged and actually attend school, they have funny quirks to them and are interconnected much in the same way most school friends would be. Through out the show every important character is put into a situation which is difficult and emotionally expensive resulting in a change. These characters evolve with the show or die. Kudos to Sunrise for making a mech show where people are actually people and not genetically or chemically enhanced some how. Music is not really a strong point in this show but they do a good job regardless, the openings and endings are pretty average of today’s shows but the situational music in the show is what catches you, it may not be fantastic but it is tasteful and well played. The plot of this show is probably the biggest draw of all the talking points. Some twists are expected and some ploys are common uses in mech shows but there are plenty of great surprises and on edge occurrences which keep this show both interesting and entertaining…it’s a mech show with a good story. Finally I was never really board with this show, the pacing was right on and though much action is used the writers have made sure that there is a light hearted element that is never abandoned yet easily not the focus of this show. 8, 9, 7, 9.5, 9…8.5/10…WTF Nina, seriously, you’re messed up. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2
Mech, Drama, Alternate History 2008 14+ for scantily clad women, action violence, and some suggestive content. The rebellion has been repelled and the dissenters captured. Lelouch has had his memories rewritten and a battalion of intelligence babysitting him incase he regains them while the rest of the Britanian empire searches for C.C. Immortals are crafty though and Lelouch a genius at tactics and theatrics. It doesn’t take long for Lelouch to once again don Zero’s façade and rescue his disenfranchised colleagues. The second rebellion begins with renewed vigor but not without some doubt and classic Zero surprises. The original cast returns for a second season and a new group is added to fill in this final season. Several twists and turns are thrown in and final ambitions revealed in this season. This show is nearly a carbon copy of the original as far a quality goes that is if you don’t mind brilliantly connected plans and plots. Nearly all the unanswered questions are attended to in a direct way and if you look closely enough they are all answered. The ending is also a shock surprise that given the previous story line few could predict. The animation style this season is exactly the same as the previous season so no changes there. The music hasn’t changed aside from the openings and endings and they are better this season I think. Character development is an easy improvement given the number of added characters and a Gundam like plot. Even Nunnely gets a major role in this one. Any other information you might need about this show can be found in the notes I have on the original. Downloaded Episodes: 25 |

Durarara!!
Durarara!!:
Action, Supernatural, Romance 2010 Let’s go with 16+ because of violence and profanity, but honestly it’s probably not something you haven’t seen before. This story is focused on a young boy (Mikado) who moves to Tokyo after his friend convinces him to come. Mikado is originally from the countryside and so city life fascinates him. What’s more, he’s come to the Ikebukuro district and there is a plethora of colorful characters and fascinating stories already weaving an intricate tapestry. However, gangs have been a problem in the past and things are coming to a head behind the scene. The question then becomes what role will Mikado play as events unfold around him. The mechanics of this show are very solid and I can hardly find a fault in it, but just the same I’ll break it down for you anyway. Let’s start with the animation style. A lot of attention was paid to making the animation clean and smooth but I feel as though they skimped on detail. Character qualities are where this show scores big. All the main characters are given episodes to feature their backstories and some of those stories root themselves in the supernatural. This is the point where people usually groan because backstory episodes are notorious for ruining the flow of a series and also really don’t stand up very well as episodes on their own. Don’t worry the backstory is only when necessary. Further, the connections between the characters are all explored. I suppose that I should tell you that the romance tag comes from the Celty and her handler, Shinra, a relationship I think I turned into guilty pleasure of mine. Music for this show comes with the obligatory opening and ending songs but this show goes an extra step to include music that isn’t just situational. Plot and story also boost this shows rating by employing coherent and interesting stories which flow at a good pace using clever plot devices at just the right moments. Honestly, the end of this anime did not bring an end to all the story lines that were going on and so I’d like to see a second season. Lastly and most importantly did I enjoy this? yes, yes I did. The characters were fantastic (especially Celty) and the stories were interesting and fit the environment of the plot. This anime was truly about telling an original story rather than entertaining the viewer through flashy colors and generic characters with a plot and story recycled from half a dozen other shows. This show rates an 8.5 / 10.0 because of all the above. Animation Style: 7pts Character qualities: 9.5pts Music: 8pts Plot and story: 9.5pts Enjoyment: 8.5pts Downloaded Episodes: 24 |

Gantz
Sci-Fi Thriller
2004 Definitely not for children MA. Contains much nudity and a few heavily sexual scenes. Gantz is pretty bloody, probably won't find many that have as much or more gore than this. The characters grow on you so you'll probably like them. This one is meant more for the male population but has romance drama melted in very well. The animation is above standard as is the character design, looks to have CG mixed in. Very sad story line with a depressing outcome. Main character is reunited with an old friend from childhood who has a good sense of right and wrong but ends up getting both of them killed in the first episode. Gantz takes random people who have died and gives them a supposed second chance but they must fight strange creatures to gain their life back. Definitely not the best I've seen and lots of attention paid on the gore and blood, I think the creators had a message but with this kind of action it gets kinda blurred. Action packed but gets repetitive. We are dealing with life as a major theme and not just how to end one. "He's a natural Killer" Downloaded Episodes: 13 |

Hakuouki
Hakuouki & Sequal
Reverse Harem, Samurai, Romance 2010 15+ Due to animated violence, profanity, and some gore but nothing that’ll make you sick on yourself. So the show set up like this: Girl (Chizuru) is searching for her father, whom is a doctor in Kyoto, when she accidentally gets caught up in a fight between Shinsengumi and a couple of Oni. The Shinsengumi take her into custody to cover up the incident. As they debate what to do with Chizuru they discover that she is the daughter of the doctor they have been looking for. They decide to protect Chizuru as she searches for her father in hopes that they themselves will catch him. As the story unfolds many secrets are revealed, the Shinsengumi become involved in a war to protect the Shogunate, and romances unfold. All in all this isn’t a bad show to pick up; the plot and story are interesting if not a bit drawn out to the point that it may feel slow. Further, though this is an anime with samurai, it is first and foremost a show about Chizuru’s interaction with them and her search for her father. Do not go into this show thinking it’s Rurouni Kenchin, you will be disappointed. Animation wise Hakuouki is well drawn but it’s not the best drawn and probably is best put into the action category when it comes to detail because not much is really paid. Character qualities actually do mater in this anime because as the story moves along many changes take place. Allegiances change, people are killed, and relationships deepen. I’d say the writers do a pretty good job to make sure that characters stay dynamic but at the same time don’t loose their core. Music for this show is nothing special so expect your typical opening and ending with situational stuff thrown in to compliment the mood. Finally and lastly, did I enjoy this show? Mostly yes and a little no. I felt many situations were drawn out further than that ought to have been and that Chizuru played the typical weak damsel in distress a little too much for having been taught swordsmanship. I’m not going to give away too much but I also am not a huge fan of samurai style tragedy. 7.2/10.0 is what I’m giving this show due mainly to the music and slow moving plot and story. Juubee Ninpuuchou
Action
1993 Not for children, contains nudity, and much violence. If you like naruto then this is totaly different. No chakra no ninja specialities asside from the bad guys. If any thing this is more like Rurouni Kenshin. Our main character Jubei is a kick ass mercenary but he's a lazy one so he'd rather be napping than fighting. Anyway he stumbles into action after killing a member of a special group of ninja and must finish it in order to get back to his life. If it were that simple this wouldn't be worth it, he's working with a Kunoichi and a govt spy with motives of their own. Downloaded Episodes: 1 |

Juubee Ninpuuchou: Ryuuhougyoku-hen
Action
2003 17+. Contains sexual scenes a little nudity and it has a moderate amount of gore. Story line is strait forward, help the damsel achieve her destiny. Our main character is charged with the protection of a certain stone and all that goes along with it which means that he must help the princess the stone goes with. Unfortunately he while skilled would rather be napping than fighting. While he tries to carry out his duty two groups of very skilled ninja are after him the girl and the stone. The characters start off as interesting but none of them are deeper than the kitchen sink aside from the old man so character development is a “meh” point. Action is kind of repetitive. The animation is pretty standard stuff nothing to impressive, has a little CG mixed in and the sound is only really good during the opening and ending sequences. Downloaded Episodes: 13 |

Kekkaishi
Kekkaishi:
Supernatural Action Comedy 2006-08 12+ for animated action violence. If you liked Shaman King and were ok with Yugio than this show will please you too. The premise is simple two families are feuding over the successorship of who is to protect a land which, since feudal times, has had strange mystical powers. These mystical energies have a tendency to give extreme boosts of power to demons and so it is coveted by demon kind. Now in the modern day the feud is superficial if anything and a school has been built on the sacred ground. It’s a case of student by day and protector by night. The plot of this story is obvious almost to the point of cruelty towards the audience so I won’t bother going into it. Setting is modern day Japan…’nough said. As far as character development goes it is a mainstay of this show. The main character starts out as an idiot blessed with tremendous ability and eventually turns into a natural tactician blessed with tremendous ability and a moral code. The music of this show unlike other shows is not a detractor from the quality. Though situational, the music is upbeat and entertaining. While the music is good the animation is decent to average with the occasional really good scene thrown in. I know I know I don’t have much to say about the show and what I have said isn’t very positive but this show is meant for kids. If I had to guess it may show up in American Saturday morning cartoons sometime. 6.9/10…Again the target audience is children so I’m a little biased. Downloaded Episodes: 52 |

Madlax
Madlax
Action, Mystery, Drama 2004 12+ Due to drama, some psychological stuff, and animated violence. Be prepared for confusion, false advertisement, and disappointment. This is about a world which, unbeknownst to everyone, has been sculpted by a criminal organization specifically so that the head of the group can gather 3 books together. Obviously these books aren’t normal so just assume it’s worth it. In his way is a professional bodyguard who is known for her incredible accuracy and skill as well as a little girl who can only be described as outside the box weird. To cover the actions of this crime syndicate a civil war is being waged and egged on by the syndicate. However, the 12 year anniversary of a historic even is coming up and the world will gain the chance to change once more. Story: Could have been way cooler and less convoluted and done a lot better. Animation style: The opening makes some false promises which if actually used in the show would have served to make this anime far better. The animation is standard and some care is paid, look to Gundam Wing for some idea. Character qualities: they could have gone and made this show far more interesting character wise by extending it and developing the character interactions and relationships. Music: nice but nothing special, mainly situational. I was waiting for a redeeming of this show but it never happened and this show left me with a sour taste. 6.6/10.0 – How can I put this, this show is stupid. Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi
Rin:
Supernatural, Action, Mystery 2008 As much as I hate to restrict a good anime like this one, I’m going to suggest the 17+ age group because of violence, nudity, and some heavily sexual scenes. Mind you, few of the scenes that have earned this rating are in poor taste and some of the violence is can be harsh. That said, you’ll be hard pressed to find a quality anime like this one. The setting for this anime is in modern day and then future Japan (Shinjuku). This story follows Rin Asogi, an immortal woman caught up in the supernatural side of our world. She is joined by her good friend and partner Mimi, also an immortal. Together they run a detective agency which performs any duty asked of them for the right money. This leads to several cases of things becoming more complicated than they would otherwise be. To make matters worse Rin is constantly being stalked by an assassin (Laura) intent on killing Rin. Further, Rin is desired by an immortal male with a nasty streak in him (apos). Fortunately for you these episodes are more like OVA so all of this and more are covered without rushing through it all. I also refuse to give away the twists and turns which make this a good watch. Technically Rin is sound. The plot fits together well and explanations of the supernatural fit in without looking like a powerpoint. With only 6 episodes this is a short anime. However, these 6 episodes are packed full with information, action, and character development so they are really 6 big episodes in which you are never board. Speaking of character development, when you create something around an immortal being the show has to be less about the advancement of said person and more about uncovering the past. The writers have done well in this area Rin and Mimi basically stay as they are throughout the show, aside from their dealings with other characters. Instead it is you who is slowly filled in on their past. Fortunately they do this without massive amounts of flashback. The animation style is well done but not overly detailed. The action scenes move along without a hitch and the slow parts feel dynamic preventing a standstill. Musically this show doesn’t disappoint with situational music which fits the fantastical yet modern nature of this anime. The opening and endings are also well selected. Enjoyment is the final piece to the ratings puzzle. I’ll tell you I enjoyed the earlier episodes most, I think it has to do with the setting being modern day. The last two episodes, set in the future, seemed strange and almost too “Saturday Morning” cartoonish to me. That’s not to say they were stretching it but rather the jump from modern day to future was sudden and unexpected. However, if you are looking you can tell that other episodes do the same thing just more subtly. All in all I think I would have stretched this one into 10 episodes because I enjoyed the adventure and would have like to have seen more of this authors take on the supernatural. Overall I rate this show an 8.1/10.0 because this show did a good job of telling a great story. Stretching it out and adding in more substance would have really helped here. Also with a show this good music unique to it would really have made it pop. Animation Style: 8.5 Character qualities: 8 Music: 7.5 Plot and story: 8.5 Enjoyment: 8 |

Nurarihyon no Mago
Nurarihyon no Mago Sennen:
Adventure, Fantasy, Supernatural 2011 I think restricting this to 12+ is a good idea, some of the concepts just require a better understanding than the little ones can muster. This anime relates the story of a modern child (Rikuo Nura) born and raised by a demon family with a proud tradition. But Rikuo only has ¼ demon blood though leaving his future leadership of the family in the air. In the modern era though humanity has forgotten completely about their ancestral dealings with demons and all are painted with stereotypes. This is hard on Rikuo because demon kind has been out of the limelight and nearly forgotten making friends hard to come by. What’s more there exists a faction of demon fighters, one of whom is a friend of Rikuo, which wish to kill the Nura family off. If this isn’t enough a dark presence has returned to earth with plans of dominance and destruction. Technically this show is sound but lacking. The story line is confusing in the very beginning. References are made to actions that Rikuo perform but we never get to see and there are time skips until Rikuo is in middle school. Personally I thought the idea of watching Rikuo master his demon transformation would be great for story continuity but the authors through that away. After these continuity issues some episodes are devoted to growth but so few that the training doesn’t even seem to matter. As to the Animation style chosen I found it was good on the whole but the characters didn’t blend with their environments well. It was as if they exist outside of their world rather than as part of it. Character qualities were also rushed like the story line. Though there were some well-defined personalities, making the characters easy to identify, this show lacked character depth. This is such a shame because many of the characters are hundreds of years old. Surly in that time they’d be more complex than they are here. Again this is another issue might have been solved with time. Musically this show was rather typical. It had its opening and ending as well as unique situational music. Finally, did I enjoy this show? Not enough to keep it around. The characters were lacking in depth, the story wasn’t solid enough, and any show in which the bad guy is a better character than the main has serious flaws; hell, the grandfather was a better character than the main. All in all this show ranks as a 6.7 / 10.0. If I can out awesome this show in my mind the writers and animators just aren’t trying hard enough. Persona: Trinity Soul
Supernatural, Action
2008 13+ for action violence and some gore as well. This show is an adaptation of the theme from the Persona games. The show starts with two brothers moving in with an older third who’s got some weighty responsibilities as it is. I’ll tell you now that despite references to his kind hearted past he’s actually quite cold and even if he’s trying to protect his ‘brothers” he never really warms up. Turns out he and others are able to summon beings called persona which are controlled by the mind. These persona are powerful and dangerous because they tax a persons mental concentration to the point of getting out of control and probably killing the user. Anyway the eldest is a police captain in charge of the local police station and involved in some pretty interesting law enforcement against an organization of persona collectors who kill other users in the process of persona extraction. Eventually these people come after his younger siblings only to find that persona abilities run deep in this family. The stakes are winner controls the fate of the world. Story line is well put together but try’s to be deeper than it really should be and really fails in doing so. This is an action type show where if any depth does exist should be aimed in either a love interest, issues dealing in pacifism, and identity crises. Granted those problems do crop up but aren’t the real focus in the illusion of profundity the writers are trying to create. Animation style is average for a new show and resembles Witch Hunter Robin but feels bland especially considering they get the opportunity to mess with some of the brighter colors when thinking up persona design. Interesting that they would chose to color the persona flat and dark. The characters are pretty stagnant throughout the show (with the exception of Jun I won’t ruin that surprise) and their developing their own persona abilities. The music was actually pretty good for openers and closers however the effort was limited to those two areas. Overall I thought that this series was drawn out by several episodes, especially at the end and for a show with super natural beings the lack of new ability development was a questionable choice by the writers….Meh is my overall reaction Downloaded Episodes: 26 |

Toaru Majutsu no Index
To Aru Majutsu no Index
Action Fantasy 2009 Age 14+ is suggested due to violence and a couple awkwardly sexual situations. Let’s imagine for a second that the world is full of magic users and people with extra sensory perception abilities. Then let us also dream up a setting where they could duke it out and no one would care. This place is called Academy City; ohh yeah…magic users aren’t allowed into Academy City and they are associated the Christianity’s various branches. The story begins with the main character (Tōma Kamijo) working at a restaurant, he seems pathetic and powerless, a bad combo in a town where fights between individual or gangs of espers are normal. Turns out he has a very unique ability which shouldn’t exist; he can cancel any mystical or paranormal ability by touching it with his right hand. Sounds cool but it is very troubling and his trouble duplicates when a little girl being hunted by the church falls from the sky and lands on his balcony. Interestingly enough, the little girl contains all magical knowledge forbidden by the church and they want it back. Kamijo must now battle the Church of England among others to save this girl and his friends and family while maintaining some semblance of sanity in the screwed up system. The setting and plot are both elaborate right from the onset, it feels as though there is much more going on than will ever be captured by this anime. This sentiment rings even truer at the end of the show. Animation style is pretty standard for today’s anime; sharp lines and complimenting colors. Character development is also pretty standard for a first season show that captured enough audience for a second season, that is to say the characters progressed more than a little and less than a lot. The music wasn’t special and anything good would be at the beginning and ends of the show. Finally, this is an action adventure kind of show and so one would expect plenty of action, there were fights but again very few moments were they were notable. Over all this is a pretty standard anime. 7.5/10 |
