Both these series has a genuin story, characters you really learn to like and they are flying in both series. Both main characters want to protect those who are close to them, and they both have a female flying with them. There are a huge storm in both series that they have to get through. Both series are great, and you should take your time watching them both.

Very similar setting, similar main characters (a girl, who can control a mighty power and a boy, who wants to protect her), some points in the plot are also very similar. Both are masterpieces and are definitely worth watching.

Lightly steampunkish futuristic series dealing with everyday protagonists getting gradually drawn into a war taking place. They definitely have the same feel to them.

They share many elements: airplanes, young pilots, war, royalty, some type of mystery involving the sky. The main characters, Kal-el & Ariel and Clause & Lavie, have similar personalities and dynamics. Toaru Hikuushi is just more light hearted.

seems to have a similar setup going on from the first episode i've seen. carries a strange technology in a world revolving around that of airships.

Aerial dogfights, lots of CGI. An unexplored setting with wars against unfamiliar foes. The story and characters are quite different though.

One is a steampunk adventure, the other is a steampunk fairy-tale, both making emphasis on splendid surroundings and fantastic devices.

Both about a girl and a boy who likes to fly. Advanture genre anime with military involved. Eventhough the settings are not alike the overall feeling seems similar to me. Pleasant shows. If you like one you might like the other.

Both are produced by Gonzo and have the character design of Range Murata. Deep, beautiful, mature, and futuristic series of the adventure, action, and sci-fi genre. Both anime have a specific setting (air in Last Exile, water in Blue Submarine # 6). Also, in both the main girl is a redhead.

Both shows feature a steampunk setting and message deliverers, with a fair amount of CGI used in-show (for the airships etc in Last Exile, for the heart-eating giant insects in Tegami Bachi). Tegami Bachi has more of a focus on the message delivery, while Last Exile has as two of its main characters some teenage message deliverers who end up getting caught up in airship wars.

Both of them are about piloting airships. They have a very similar concept....In a sense...

both occur in a post-apoch world setting involving the use of past technologies in order to survive, and require the discovery of ancient secret technologies to continue their civilization's lives and hope for the future.

Gentle and touching songs performed by Hitomi Kuroishi accompanying key scenes

Other than energetic main characters, both anime seem to present a futuristic world divided between castes and the world ruled by a particular resource. For Last Exile, it's airship technology, whereas for Shangri-la, it's carbon. However, Shangri-la is set in the near future and has a strong environmentalism and corporate power issue brought up.

one guy and one girl trying to survive to many adversities though allies, lotsa air combat, and all of the victorian decoration you could eat at the buffet ;)

Technology and the military are present in both series as the protagonists shares a sibling like relationship as they endure on journeys/missions. Love and friendship plays major roles in the story as the world is set into a fantasy like/futuristic setting. There's something mysterious behind the scenes in both series as there seems to be an imminent war brewing.

Similar series, featuring airships and pirates, however Ozuma takes place in a desert environment. Last Exile is probably the superior, but both are Science Fiction futures with mysterious girls and a Harlock-esque pirate-like captain and spunky young male lead.

mecha, main character is very skilled, and is kinda destined to change/save the world. main char is surrounded by girls, yet no relationship, well no truly romantic ones main character cares more about the protection of others

Last Exile is a “middle-road” sci-fi like Cannon Busters. Both have little gems that make them interesting. Last Exile is set in a steampunk world where flight is more common than driving thanks to Claudia crystals.

These two series honestly reminded me one and the other. Both Last Exile and Suisei no Gargantina take place in a fictional world where the new characters settle in during a period of war. In fact, both series involve a colony/country that is at conflict with another race/faction. Both series' main main female character has an energetic personality and often helps the main male protagonist with certain tasks. The characters in both series are also considered experienced pilots. They both have great scenery of the outdoors that is presented visually with expression and flavor. Both series have drama, action, comedy, and science fiction themes.

The feel of Mouretsu Pirates, especially the later episodes, were quite similar to Last Exile. Though the setting is slightly different, the characters, situations and atmosphere in both anime are alike. Though Mourestu Pirates isn't quite the same caliber as Last Exile in terms of plot and overall grandeur, if you found one entertaining you should check out the other.

Both shows have an "Epic" vibe to them, and both feature two people becoming involved in something bigger than they could have imagined when they first got involved.

- War between two similar species - Main character trying to protect a young girl who could possibly be the key to either ending or winning the war - Genius teenager - One species perceives themselves as superior to the other with better technology I watched Last Exile a while ago and so when I watched Aldnoah Zero recently all I could think was "If you like one of these you'll probably like the other".

Both titles are solid fantasy anime that hold a little bit of a similar feel of magical technology. Last Exile is a little more Steampunk while Chaika is a little more Technomancy, but they have a similar tone to me. Last Exile is darker and better of the two by far, in my opinion.

They have a very similar flavor in both story and aesthetic

War, ships and young pilots. A key difference is that instead of mobile suits you are going to see ships and war is only limited on earth. It's not the gundam universe but is an anime you will enjoy.

Last Exile and Captain Harlock might not seem similar at first glance, but they actually have a solid link: Alex Rowe, one of the main characters of Last Exile, was written specifically with Captain Harlock in mind. Let us count the ways. Longish hair? Check. Badass cape swishing? Check? Captain of a cool airship/spaceship? Check. Notorious outlaw? Check. Enigmatic and Mysterious? Check. Cool Sword? Well, it's a gun-cane, but check. Waging a one man war against tyrannical overlords/aliens things? Check. There are even more similarities but it would take forever to explain them. Basically, Alex Rowe is an extremely well done, very deep, three dimensional steampunk version  read more

Fantastic Children and Last Exile has a similar kind of longing imbued in the plot, the longing for peace, the longing something beyond the known. There's also a similar path followed by the characters to find this something and they have a somewhat similar group dynamic. Both are highly recommended.

Steampunk anime are few in number, so it makes sense to mention previous works in the subgenre whenever a newer example comes along. Kabaneri is a zombie apocalypse in a steampunk Japan, while Last Exile tells the story of two nations forced into war against each other via the use of airships.

The story, technology, and races are extremely similar here. If you like Senjou no Valkyria then you will definitely like Last Exile. Other than the love story everything is really similar but with more of an emphasis on planes and flying aircraft in Last Exile where Senjou no Valkyria's world relies on tanks and the like.

One of the best CG arts in anime

Last Exile has considerably fewer lesbians, but both Exile and Simoun take place in worlds heavily reliant on science-fictional or fantastical aircraft. Also, neither really allows their airborne characters to escape reality; you won't find many idealized happy results here.

Despite large plot and animation differences, there is something similar in the feel of these anime. If you're looking for something just like Last Exile/Ergo Proxy, this isn't what I am talking about. But if you like one, you may want to try the other. Of course the most obvious similarity is the cute little girl running around amid a world in chaos, but, more importantly both are about journeys navigating through different forces trying to manipulate the characters. Also, there a mystery (what is Exile and how is Alvis related to it/ what are the Proxies?) that is revealed as the series goes on.  read more

While I was watching "Last Exile" all I could think about was how much this was like "Nadia: the Secret of Blue Water". Both series are steampunk, both take place on a big ship that is quote "the safest" or "most advanced" ship on the planet, the crew is a mystery most of the series, both involve planes, the plot is slowly revieled (for most of the series many things are unclear), both are heavy on character development and relationships, and they both have good drama and action scenes. Both series are even paced the same (well Nadia spends more time letting us  read more

In Glass no Kantai Gonzo tried to create a world of similar ambiance and intrigue as in Last Exile. Both anime feature fantastic and unworldly backgrounds and express the fate of empires in the actions of individuals. However, Last Exile is much better at it :)

Last Exile and Fena: Pirate Princess follows the adventures of the main characters who undertake a quest to reach a location while fending off pursuit and discovering truths about the world. Fena: Pirate Princess has only one main character who is the damsel in distress, which means the narrative is structured around her character journey. It is a personal story that has difficulty delivering on its initial excitement. Last Exile has four main characters, including a damsel in distress, so the narrative is a more complex story as each character has their own journey. It is very much an epic story given the stakes  read more

While being very different artistically the styles are very similar. The era they're set in is almost identical (high-tech rennasiance) Neither are optimistic but both have compelling, deep storylines and great characters.

animation and feel are pretty similiar

Both series present themselves with adventures, but each journey also becomes a way to explore the psychologies of the protagonists. Wolf's Rain's ending has quite a different feel from Last Exile's, but in the end, the morals are very alike.

Similar alternate world time line involving technology and weapons including airships and open cockpit planes and despotic dictator. TBWStW also has a bit of a "steampunk" feel to it whereas Last Exile is decidedly such. Despite the fantasy aspect of "special powers" The Boy Who Saw the Wind is possibly a bit more realistic than Last Exile. Both are excellent.

Both are sci-fi's that focus more on drama than action. Last Exile is steam-punk, Terra e is outer space.

Both shows star a pair of children, a boy and a girl, who are basically orphans Both pairs of children are involved in a quest to find a parent(s) after seeming to receive something from their parent(s) Said parent(s) are considered a legend in their field of work Both take place in a world which previously had an advanced civilization on it Both have the children have a job that involves delivering something (one is delivering packages to others, the other is delivering artifacts to the surface). The job also has levels. The job was previously undertaken by their parent(s) Both involve a friend of their parent(s) who is currently  read more

Both have sci-fi/steampunk themes (LE is flying aircraft, GR is trains). Deal mostly with humans, with the occasional alien. GR is shounen, LE is seinen.

Pilots in both adventure series are trusted with delivering an important female cargo.

No I'm not mad there's one thing that they have in common. I mean Alex resambles Spike not only in deadly skills but both are deeply touched by past and thus shares only one reason to live - vengeance
report Recommended by Rychulubicz
Both stories are driven by the prophecy of a boy/girl who holds the key to save mankind while fighting against very powerful enemies. The 3D visuals and soundtrack for both series are great, with lots of fights between space/aerial battleships.

It's surprising how no one had noticed how similar the main characters and some features in both shows are. The ship inhabited with people, the war between countries, the protagonist who occupied with something that is not school, the cool guy who speaks less, the "bad" fussy girlish - looking guy who will probably become "good" guy, the mysterious loli who has hidden personality. Both animes give the same feeling of melancholy and happiness. If you liked Whales, you should really watch Last Exile, if you hadn't. If you watched Last Exile, then Whales would be a nice addition, but not must-see for you.
