Gintama

Gintama is a very inconsistent and overrated series.

Many Anime fans tend to praise Gintama as the best battle shonen Anime of all time, and they inflate it’s status even further by giving it perfect ratings, and while Gintama is a show that does good in some aspects or during some arcs, it fails at being a consistent show throughout it’s long two hundred and two episode run, which hinders it from becoming good or even great by extension. Gintama is definitely not a bad show, far from it actually. It is just that Gintama suffers from problems that cannot be overlooked, and today we ... are here to see why this Anime is fine as it is, though not good and certainly not the greatest.

The first problem or issue that Gintama suffers from are the filler episodes that almost every battle shonen suffers from. While there aren’t many filler episodes in this series, there are still some filler episodes that cannot be overlooked, and they hinder from the overall show. Fillers hinder a show due to them not being necessary to the overall plot, and while the filler episodes here are considerably less than those of other famous battle shonen series, they still exist and cannot be overlooked.

A second issue that this series suffers from is the lack of any imagination or thought when it comes to the comedy in it. The comedy throughout the whole series boils down to:

- Poop jokes
- Toilet paper humor
- Someone calling Kagura his boss
- Someone saying “Zura Ja Nai, Katsura Da”
- References to other Anime such as Dragon Ball, Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind, and such
- Funny faces
- Jabs at otakus
- A homeless man
- An angry brother and an angry sister beating people up because they are angry

Due to this, the characters become plot devices to convey one or two jokes every episode rather than develop and move on from them. Heaven forbid a character evolves from the same joke he was given since the first few episodes, into a character who actually becomes developed and well written. Heaven also forbid this series learns how to create most of it’s jokes without the need to rely on references from other Anime, take a jab at some, or just use the same joke over and over again until it becomes stale. Toilet humor is hysterical the first time it is used, and the second time is not a big deal, but when it exceeds that line, that is when we have a problem. Besides that, the humor in Gintama is not so bad, the references could work at times and when they do, they turn hilarious and are genuinely some of the funniest episodes an Anime fan could see. Take a look at episode 119, which is probably the best Dragon Ball Z parody an Anime or anything for that matter ever pulled off. The same goes for episode 110, which is easily the funniest episode in the whole series, if not the entirety of Anime as a whole. Gintama has genuinely funny humor when it works, but alas, these episodes are a rare gem to find in a series that uses and repeats the same gags over and over again until they turn trite.

The third and most important issue that Gintama suffers from is the lack of a plot or a narrative that connects all the episodes together one by one. It feels meandering, as the viewer wonders why they are watching this series in the first place. Due to there not being a plot, it becomes predictable as to what it’s formulaic episodic structure will be: Either an episode about something absurd that comes out of nowhere due to this world being inhabited by all kinds of zany creatures, some unfunny jokes which are repeated over and over again, or some random enemy coming from afar to wreak havoc on the city. Rinse, and then repeat. It all feels pointless, because why watch Gintama when there isn’t even a plot or end goal in sight? This is my biggest problem with the series. After indulging myself in the long and predictable episodes, I felt dissatisfied with an ending that did not give me a solid conclusion to the series. Now granted, this is a series that is ongoing and there are different seasons, but that is not a valid excuse to end it on a lackluster finale. Take a look at Hunter x Hunter, which is the greatest battle shonen ever created, while the manga was ongoing, the Madhouse staff ended that Anime on a very good note, to the point where it could be considered the actual ending to the series without hurting it’s narrative.

Other issues that this series suffers from are the other issues that other battle shonen suffer from: The hero is too strong for his own good, and while he does struggle to get a win, it is still out of the realm of logic how he wins his battles. The fillers which I have mentioned above. The same predictable battle shonen formula that other series suffer from, where a villain shows up and then gets defeated, and the same juvenile jokes repeated over and over again. Gintama only has one thing going for it, and that is the fact that there is no power escalation in the series.

Now that we are done with all the narrative elements of Gintama, let us take a look at it’s characters.

The characters in Gintama are divisive. Some of them are rather well written and well developed, others are not so much. The characters that are one dimensional in Gintama are:

1. Katsura and Elizabeth, who are only in the series for the simple gist of making referential humor and acting silly to amass some laughs. There is nothing more to Katsura other than calling Kagura boss and saying “Zura ja nai, Katsura da.” He does not develop throughout the whole run of this Anime.

2. Shinpachi, as his whole character arc revolves around bullying his otaku friends and being an obsessed idol fan and having an annoying voice. Granted, he does get some episodes where he falls in love with some girl, but that episode is unnecessary since the Anime glosses over said girl, and is never used to develop his character further.


3. Most of the female cast, with the exception of Kagura. The women in the series either amount to fanservice or to annoy the males, that is it. Kagura is amazing though, as the series centers some or many of it’s episodes on her.

The characters who are well developed are Tomoya, Sugo, Gorilla, Kagura and some others from the Shinsengumi, as well as some villains like Itou and lord Housen.

Speaking of Housen and Itou, their arcs are the best in the whole series, followed closely by the Benizikura arc. As for the rest of the arcs, they aren’t nearly as emotional nor do they contain the same level of character depth.

Overall, Gintama is far from being the best battle shonen out there, as it suffers from many issues to even be called a good series. When an Anime makes you question the first fifty episodes of it’s run and think “When does this get better?” you know that Anime won’t turn out to be a good product. Though Gintama is not a good Anime, it is not a bad one either, as it has some very strong episodes going for it.

Gintama is the capstone of a generation of manga. The requirements to enjoy it are simple: Do you like gag and toilet humor? Are you familiar with the more popular manga and anime from the golden era up until the mid-2010s? If so, you'll most likely love this perfect blend of action, humor, and drama.

With that said, let’s dive into Gintama—its themes, structure, and how it compares to other works. We’ll also look at whether its beginning is misleading and how leverages the medium to deliver its themes.

So, what is this show about?

This show is set in Edo, the land of the samurai—a clear metaphor ... for Japan. The central thesis is that while the Amanto (foreigners, aliens) arrive and transform it into something entirely new, the core of what it means to be a samurai endures.

Gintama reimagines Bushido in a simpler, modern way that applies universally, regardless of one’s background. Giving an extensive focus on having something to protect and the strength in staying true to your values.

First things later, let’s talk art direction.

The character designs are remarkably recognizable, even the intentionally bland ones. The openings and soundtrack are memorable, too. Sure, there are moments when the lack of budget shows, but the series uses that to its advantage, turning it into a running joke that also pokes fun at the industry itself.

One thing worth mentioning is the voice acting. Some characters are brought to life with so much personality through the performances. Combined with Gintama's amazing filler content, it makes the show something truly special.

So, how does it start?

I quit Gintama after the first episode. Two years later, I dropped it again after the second episode. Finally, five years later, I tried the third episode—and now I’m hooked. I actually recommend skipping the first two episodes. They don’t add much and are so confusing and nonsensical that they become an unnecessary barrier to entry, where there’s already a lot to take in.

Beyond that, if you’ve seen any gag shows or sitcoms, you’ll find the beginning familiar. The early gags may only be mildly amusing at first, or even fly under the radar. After episode 3, it’s important not to skip any episodes, as the humor starts building momentum.

Comedy-centric shows often need to lean on other aspects as they go on. While the easy route would be romance, Gintama takes the battle shōnen approach. You can get a taste of this mix early on, though the execution improves by a lot over time.

What about the characters?

The characters don’t age and are tied to specific gags. Their introductions are usually semi-comedic, and they continue to reappear in gags that make you attached to their comedic side. But somewhere down the line, you start getting deeper, more meaningful explorations of their character. In other words, they’re gag characters with layers.

What about the story itself?

Imagine watching The Simpsons, and suddenly Lisa is fighting to the death with Bart in a three-episode arc that dives into a traumatic event from their childhood. That’s the kind of unpredictability Gintama offers. You never know whether the next scene will be comedic, gut-wrenching, or packed with action.

Every episode is a wild card. The characters might mess with the opening, the show might have a different title, and the tone can swing from somber to hilarious in seconds. Sometimes you’ll need to watch multiple episodes in one sitting, and other times just one will do. It’s worth looking up a list of arcs to get a feel for the flow.

It is also worth saying that there will be so many unexpected tie-ins. Characters and events that almost left your mind get brought back. Gintama fully utilizes its length to deliver both character arcs and interactions that cannot be as impactful were it streamlined of a lot shorter.

Then, what did I think of it as a whole?

Gintama is a beautifully crafted piece. Sure, there are episodes that fall flat, jokes that don’t land, or obscure parodies that miss the mark. The quality isn’t always consistent—sometimes the fillers are even better than the main episodes.

I can’t recommend it to everyone, though. As much as I love it and wish it were more popular, that would be misleading. There are a lot of crude jokes, mood swings, and references that make it hard to call Gintama a universally enjoyable experience. For its target audience, this is close to a masterpiece; for anyone else, it might just feel like a crude mess.

Gintama has become somewhat of a favourite amongst many in the anime community, as evident to anyone who views the Top Anime on MAL. However, does popularity directly correlate to quality? With a 5/10 rating, it's obvious my answer is no, but why exactly is that?

The series has a good start with it's interesting setting being a mix of Japanese history and sci-fi with a cast of colourful characters. After the first few episodes of character introductions, however, the story can be hit or miss at times...when it shows up. The plot continuity tends to be quite thin, with what is the main story only ... showing up every dozen or several dozen episodes before being succeeded by episodic comedy arcs. This leaves the series feeling disjointed when it takes so long for what appears to be the core narrative is given a background seat constantly and the comedy dominates the series. It also doesn't help that when the serious arcs crop forward, the story seems to borrow too heavily from Rurouni Kenshin in many narrative elements, particularly concerning Gintoki.

This would be fine when the series brands itself as a comedy primarily, if not for three major factors. First would be the scope/length of the series. Pushing the main plot back somewhat in order to make the characters more entertaining would be fine if it was a short and concise series that got to the point. When your series is going on for several hundred episodes whilst building up several plot events and constantly shifting to a more serious tone when doing so yet taking too long to deliver, however, it's quite an inexcusable problem when most of the comedic arcs weren't essential for fleshing out the plot or characters.
The second major flaw would be what the comedy consists of; referential humour. Whilst I got most of the references, even some of the more niche ones, and got a laugh out of them, I can't say it really makes for quality when by nature referential humour is directed at a select few and serves more to just advertise another series, which tends to make a series inferior to the one it's referencing by default due to the joke purely relying on the latter. The humour was fine for the first 40 or so episodes, where there was far more of a reliance on slapstick and the references were very subtle. When you get to characters exclaiming things such as "Isn't this Dragon Ball?" or calling out the reference in such an explicit manner lacks creativity and overall ruins the joke. Moreover, the constant need to make fun of other Shonen Jump titles comes off as quite a double-standard when the series is fine with overusing many Shonen tropes in the serious arcs such as power of friendship. It even comes off as bad world building when the vast differences in this world with aliens and Edo Period customs merged obviously wouldn't produce the same origin for ideas for many manga and therefore makes the references something that shouldn't be anything similar to what they were.
This would be a poor nitpick in a typical comedy series that doesn't take itself seriously, but therein lies the third major flaw in the comedy, being tonal whiplash and inconsistency. When you go from a series that constantly changes reality through breaking the fourth wall that will all of a sudden become entirely serious and oblivious to such a fact about their comedic universe leaves the series inconsistent.

This isn't the only comedic element of the series as the character interactions are quite funny at first...until the running gags get repeated far too much. It's fine having the joke of Kondo being a stalker repeated one or two times. Doing so about fifty or so times is annoying. The characters could make up for this with their personality and the writing behind them if not for the fact that, aside from Gintoki and perhaps Kagura, the main cast tend to only have one or two main character traits to remember them by whenever the arc isn't serious. Even for the more serious arcs, what character development occurs is never a permanent thing. An arc where Sougo learns to treat Hijikata with more respect? He's back to aiming a bazooka at him the next arc. An arc where Shinpachi is given the opportunity to grow as a person? He's going to be treat as just a pair of glasses in the next episode. The sexual tension between Gintoki and Tsukuyo in particular is quite the perpetual pile of nothing with neither taking the initiative, especially when the two are adults in their late twenties at least and not middle schoolers with a crush.

As far as the superficial aspects of art and sound go, these are very good. The art and the usage of it's animation helps offer a lot of comedy from the purely physical gags as does the excellent voice acting with the seiyuu having such distinctive voices that their characters have truly become a part of them. The soundtrack is also great in it's variation that always manages to set the tone of the scene. Despite all that, these are just superficial aspects that don't act as much of a saving grace for the series.

So, overall, Gintama is a series that had many elements that could have been good had the execution of it's pacing and comedy been executed far better. Unfortunately, this didn't improve as the series went on and whilst the series is fine as pure entertainment, it certainly isn't the 10/10 many would hail it as. At least this first series is still better than the sequels to succeed it.

As for alternative recommendations, if you want a parody series that doesn't take itself seriously at all and remains dumb fun throughout, there's the series that likely inspired it Dr. Slump. If wanting a comedy series that offers more food for thought than a few jokes and have good pacing, there's The Tatami Galaxy and Great Teacher Onizuka, the latter of which does referential humour well by having a setting that would make it seem natural and doesn't overuse it.

Gintama is many things, but it sure is not the second coming of Jesus in shounen anime form.

At the time of this writing, Gintama inexplicably has 6 spots in the top 20 here on MAL. It used to be 5 spots in the top 11 when I started watching it. After watching 201 episodes of it, I can promise you that at the very least, these 201 episodes do not deserve to be on any “top” lists. I am at a loss for words trying to explain how it got here in the first place.

The one thing that makes Gintama any good, is ... that it is satirical; its downfall is being exactly what it’s satirizing. Gintama is a comedy at heart that makes its home in the shounen genre while playfully dissecting shounen tropes. When you effectively use a trope you are satirizing, you not only validate that trope, but you defeat yourself in the process. Whatever point, or joke you're trying to make dissolves at a fundamental level.

If I despise Gintama on a philosophical level, why did I watch 201 episodes of it? Gintama is a lot of fun sometimes. Gintama is the funniest anime I’ve seen. A good 90% of it is jokes after jokes and there are also two or three arcs that have good drama. That is one thing that I’ll say about Gintama. The funniest parts are funnier than any other anime I’ve seen, and the best serious parts are better than any shounen anime I’ve seen. At its best, Gintama could probably score a 7 from me, maybe an 8. But, the fact that you have to put up with literally hundreds of mindless episodes to run across some good parts makes it hard to justify a higher score.

Gintama is a good “I want to turn my brain off and have some laughs” anime most of the time sprinkled with some decent drama here and there.

As much as I prefer to watch more meaningful anime, something tells me I’ll continue watching Gintama whenever I want to distract myself and have simple laughs.

Gintama has few funny episodes but after you binge watch this show for some time , you will easily get burnt out. The comedy gets stale and not funny anymore. For you to enjoy this show again, you need to take break for few months and after you return you might find next few episodes funny and again you realize that its not funny anymore. This was me trying to enjoy gintama but after I finished a certain serious arc in the story I decided to stop.

Pros of this show :

1) some episodes can be funny
2) consistent good animation

Cons of this ... show :

1) comedy gets repetitive
2) no plot progression whatsoever
3) use of ost was a major turn off. The ost isn't bad in itself. But when same ost was used for funny and serious scenes , I couldn't take the serious scenes seriously.

4) the major arcs of the story aren't that good either. They are just okay. (I watched up to episode 105. So I don't know if they become good in future )

First impressions, in my life time I have gone through many challenges and trials,
Each more difficult than the last.
But none could prepare me for this mighty challenge that took all my shounen nakama willpower to face,
And that is watch gintama a shounen I think is over hyped as fuck.
Quick side note I going to talk about the series as a whole so It includes all ginmata 2014 and 2017 shit because I am pretty sure seen enough to see where it going.

Join Gintoki Sakata a former rouge samurai war veteran who dose odd jobs in order that pay the rent on time which doesn't happen very often.

If I where describe the story Of gintama as a whole,
I would probably conpare it to a calm in the storm.
What I mean of this you ask?

By calm I mean that 85% of the actual story are mostly focused on episodic comedy that manly relines on shounen manga and Japanese culture references for its jokes.
Which for the most part I didn't find very funny.
Like there few episodes that made to laugh,
For example the one with the turtle assassin and that ep where the one of the cop characters is looking for a place to smoke and my personal favorite so far was the one with the pen friend with the nerdy guy and the nerdy chick.
I thought those episodes where pretty funny,
but other than those examples I was bored to tears and nearly wanting to punch my computer screen to try and end my boredom and suffering.

The storm Which i was referring to earlier is what the other 15% of the story is focused on.
Which in my opinion made this show more likable for me personality.
Is the parts where there very serious and shit is going down.
Which honestly blew me away.
First for shounen standards these serious arcs are amazing like this took be back to my younger years when I used to watch Action movies a lot with hype and excitement.
I mean this pretty much had the cream of the crop,
It had An interesting setting which breeds so much potential, it has the back story's and character relations which helps to care when shit hits the fan, badass fights which mixes samurai with aliens and massive space battle ships, it has the tension and the drama.

So what could possibly go wrong.

Well there is the thing where it basically pisses away most of it story telling potential on episodic bull shit,
And for those asking yes I understand that all series not matter how serious it gets dose need a few cool moments every now and then especially in action shounen like this.
But in all honesty it also what's really holding it back,
Like when It actually has a story and it being serious and what not.
it actually very good.
For example the Shinsengumi Crisis arc or the Yoshiwara in Flames arc,
Those arc showed me that when gintama really wants to it can tell a good story.

If I am being Completely honest That is what makes me feel bad for the story in general because it's not reaching its full potential,
It has all these ingredients and doesn't even use half of them to its full effect.
It's a battle shounen when you strip it to its most basic components and it never wants to fully commit to that or build itself up like say for example yu yu hakasho.

So in conclusion I think mostly the story is mostly bullshit with a few good arcs that more than makes up for the shit you have to sit through.


Characters, 6/10

The main character Gintoki I think is quite cool-ish, I mean at lest he not another teenager protagonist.
I would describe his personality like the story the calm before the storm,
Generally he very selfish, prevcnted and pretty chill about everything.
But when shits hits the fan you see more of his more intense nature.
I like his back story,
I think it's quite interesting and probably one of the few highlights of this show.

Side characters,
They all have a sense of personality and they all there gimmicks.
Some of them develop but its mostly the core cast.

But The rest are kind of throw away most of them just stays to there gimmicks,
Like a fly on dog shit So all freshness dies pretty quickly.

Also most of the time I forgot most of characters that actually existed.
I had continue to reminding myself who these people are and what they do,
But that could be because of the big cast of characters and also the fact that most of these characters I don't give a fuck about.
I think the character interactions where quite fun to watch.
It almost like watching a big family interacting or some sort of gang with very close bonds to each over.
So that quite nice because it give you a reason to care.




Art, 6/10

The animtion is fine,
it gets more detailed and shiney as the shows goes along.
The fight scenes are quite nice there some very good sword battles.

It has a usual style for most shounen,
Like for example naruto and dragon ball Z.
It has that feel and look similar to those shows.

The character design look interesting enough,
I really like the robot chick design because it reminds me of chobitts.

Some of the alien design could be better though,
Like with some of these designs I thinking to myself that the person who made this was smoking some high quality shit.
For example there this one race that looks exactly like Humans but the where duck costumes and eat old Nintendo games with rice.


Sound, 6/10

Sense this is a old running shounen it has a lot of op and ending,
Which for the most part I thought where ok.
Nothing much really stands out for me much, except for op 5, 10 , 12 which I quite liked.

The ost was fine as well.
But nothing really got my interest.
There is something here that are worth a quick listen.

Enjoyment, 5/10

When it comes to enjoyment, this was a very mixed bag for me.
Because for the first 100 ep I was pretty much forcing myself to watch it,
Like I was just so bored.
There where a few episodes which keeped me entertained like the examples I mentioned earlier.
But when it's actually serious it's very good and I am very much entertained and even falling for some of the show charm.
So I hate it lest than I thought I would.

Overall, 6/10

I would like to state that This show is way to over hyped.
if your in your shounen phase then I guess I can recommend this to you,
But just word to the wise it not as good as the hype makes it out to be.

If your out of your shounen phase then probably stay away unless you want to try watch a shounen again to change it up.
so my advice watch the first 30 ep and if you don't like it then probably leave it alone.

as much as i wanna leave it there i gotta write more, so here we go:

gintama is one of those anime that everyone praises. all series are in the top 50 on this site; and the shogun assassination and goodbye shinsengumi arcs are always talked about among the best in anime. but honestly i just don't like it that much.

i enjoyed the humor for the first dozen episodes or so, but then it just got old to me. as much as i think the show has good dynamics, it just gets old quickly, at least in my opinion.

i know that everyone loves ... the serious arcs but honestly i don't feel like watching dozens of comedy episodes that i don't enjoy for an arc i might not enjoy.

The first season of Gintama is an ultra-episodic and inconsistent show, which doesn't escalates well, mainly because of the amount of episodes(201).
The plot is not really developed in this season except for some isolated "serious arcs", but even though it is focused in comedy, the first episodes doesn't really make a good impression in this aspect, as most of the jokes are not really funny.
With Benizakura arc, the show starts increasing its quality: the jokes are actually funny, and some major arcs happens, but it doesn't really make off for the 50 first boring introductory and useless episodes.
The characters are rarely developed in this first ... part of the series, being usually used for jokes, mainly satirizing other JUMP titles. Characters like Katsura and Sarutobi are ridiculous stupid, just so the show has a running gag.
Basically, I found this show fine to watch, even though I was lazy getting past the first episodes, if you want to give it a try, go for it, but I can't guarantee you will like.

Accidentally wrote a review on season 4 at first, so I'll just post it here, hoping this is the first season.

I really wanted to like Gintama. I pushed myself through quite a few episodes, hoping it'd get better and become that awesome anime people talk about. After 67 episodes you just to come to this conclusion of not enjoying it very much and still being clueless.

There are some times where it's funny and the story makes some sense, but as someone who doesn't really understand the thousands of references or nuances thrown around every episode, it just comes off as a random, over the top, ... and very shallow thing you leave in the background as noise.

The main characters are pretty likeable, but everything that happens is either so fast, gross, random, unbelievable, etc.. that it's hard to actually get into. I truly don't understand why it's so high on the list, maybe I just have bad taste, or maybe it's a show for a specific type of person. Not for me!

I'll keep it short. When it comes to comedy and likeable characters, Gintama is amazing in every way. However I can't stand one thing and that's how melodramatic it is. People rarely mention that about Gintama, but it's not only comedy at all. You have one episode where they're making poop jokes and on the next episode you see the most melodramatic and cheesy thing on the fucking planet. Every arc needs to have an extremely cheesy episode (usually more than one) where some random person you've met two episodes ago goes on about their tragic life and their honor and struggles and blablabla who ... cares. Well Gintoki sure does because then out of the blue he just starts giving them a life lesson that apparently only him, a stranger to them could give them. It just ruins all the fun for me and it's sad because I really like the comedy.
I guess if you don't mind melodramatic stuff you'll love Gintama because it's otherwise great!

156 episodes in, I've gotten a solid idea of what makes Gintama enjoyable/unenjoyable, let's keep it short:

Good:
- Well-rounded, likeable and peculiar cast of characters that have great chemistry. They're one of the main reasons why I keep on watching
- Heartfelt moments; Gintama is anything but shallow
- Mostly engaging fight scenes
- Diverse in genres (action, adventure, comedy, horror, mystery, romance, supernatural, SoL, etc.)

... Bad:
- It often gets WAY too melodramatic, but frustratingly so. I mean, it's cool when it's about a main or a side character, but 70% of the time, those overly sentimental stories are about irrelevant characters that show up once and literally never again, which makes it hard to even care. It's something i personally find incredibly problematic about Gintama, considering the fact that unnecessarily melodramatic episodes take up a lot of the series.
- Lots, but like LOTS of episodes are boring/fillers.
- Takes time before things get "interesting"
- Lacks anticipation and suspense.

Mixed feelings:
- It's episodic most of the time (it's not one huge plot that overarches the series)
- The comedy is only good at times...it often feels forced ngl
- There are over 367 episodes in the Gintama universe (long term commitment to consider); if you prefer fast-paced content that goes straight to the point, you're probably going to be disappointed for a while.
- Just to put it out there: the PG-13 rating is to be taken with a grain of salt.
- Obviously, it's an "old" series, so it's to be expected that the art and animation aren't that polished, but sometimes, they're just blatantly lazy about it (e.g., idk if they think if it's funny or smt, but they like to do this thing where the characters talk over a fixed image of the house where they live, so you just hear their voice but can't see their interaction)

Bottom Line, I will keep on watching this series, because I feel as though it hasn't fully unlocked its full potential and i hope eventually it will.
