Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

The "Anarchy Sisters," Panty and Stocking, have been kicked out of Heaven for, to put it mildly, misbehaving. Led by a priest named Garterbelt, these angels must buy their way back by exterminating ghosts in Daten City. But this task requires unconventional weapons for these unorthodox angels—they transform their lingerie into weapons to dispatch the spirits. Unfortunately, neither of them take their duties seriously, as they rather spend their time in pursuit of other "hobbies": Panty prefers to sleep with anything that walks, and Stocking favors stuffing her face with sweets than hunting ghosts.

Follow these two unruly angels as they battle ghosts, an overflow of bodily fluids, and their own tendency to get side-tracked in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

Watch episodes 1,6,7,8,9,11, and 13 for the gems of panty and stockings. The rest of the episodes are literal borderline on every occasion. The episodes listed above ARE the gems people will talk about and the rest are ones people will use to shit on the show. I how ever am in the middle of it and would love to reduce this anime to a random snippet show to let it continue its entire story in small stories which are literal borderline. Since honestly skipping any of the episodes does not at all damage the whole of the show. Thank ... you!

Mixed Feelings

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is an absolute phenomenally made send-up of American pop culture, perfectly imitating western animation in a way that shows just how appreciative this Japanese studio is of animation across the pond, and how both American and Japanese animation would not be where they are without each other.

However, being a perfect imitation of an American cartoon means that it perfectly captures common flaws of the medium just as much as its strengths.

While it may have gone on to crash and burn, Studio Gainax was absolutely revolutionary in what it was able to do with the time it had, and it permanently ... changed anime as a medium. However, if you’ve never actually seen a Gainax show, you’ll likely be completely unaware of how much inspiration they drew from American media—*particularly* American animation. Given that anime fans in the west tend to get bad reputations for being obsessed with a foreign culture, Studio Gainax is essentially a giant middle finger to those who believe this is a bad thing, as they were equally obsessed with America as Americans are with Japan. While people love to talk about how western animation is becoming more and more anime influenced, they hardly bring up how the inverse is also true, so Panty and Stocking is an absolute delight as it proves that Americans and the Japanese appreciate each other’s pop culture and animation equally. And isn’t sharing culture a beautiful thing?

That being said…

So, you know how anime is infamous for having tropes like the 3000 year old loli, or, appropriately, “gainaxing”? Well, American animation has tropes equally as infamous. In particular, people love to look down on adult-oriented American animation for being vulgar simply for the sake of it. Unlike in Japan, Americans have had to fight to prove animation isn’t just for kids, so they overcompensated with needless sex, language, gore, and low-brow humor that serves no purpose other than proving it cannot be for kids.

And just as this is a massive pitfall in the actual quality of western animation, so too does it drag down Panty and Stocking.

Now, I want to make one thing clear: I am not some type of puritan who is against vulgarity and 18+ content. In conversation, I swear like a sailor and sex is a pretty frequent topic of discussion; I make sex jokes at every opportunity I can. Granted, I’ve never been one for gross-out humor, but I’m also not against it. In fact, I think vulgarity can be done very well in fiction for both drama and comedy so long as it has purpose, reasoning, and good delivery. The thing is, the vulgarity in Panty and Stocking does not have that.

Characters moan, get naked, spew bodily fluids, and scream the fuck word at the top of their lungs every five seconds, giving no time for any of those jokes to actually land. Why is Panty a slut? Because sex is funny. Not what you do with that sex, or how you portray it—no, just the act of sex happening is inherently comedic. Laugh. And now Stocking calls her a whore, which is also inherently comedic, because bad words are always funny no matter what. Hilarious. And the black guy looks like *that*—just like the black guys we see on all of those comedies on TV! Aren’t we comedic geniuses?

I could throw around a lot of big words to describe this, like “ostentatious” or “gratuitous.” But honestly? It’s just tacky.

And the thing is, I actually do think it had some good jokes, and the show could have been much funnier if it just spaced out the vulgar jokes and gave them more layers and complexity, making them actually clever and giving the audience time to process them.

The worst part, though, is just how utterly disappointing it is.

Because when it comes to what Panty and Stocking does well, it does them *really* well. The art and animation is absolutely gorgeous, utilizing the geometric style popular with western animation of the 2000s in a way so perfect it could almost pass for a western show if it didn’t still have that distinctive anime flair—perfect for a Japanese tribute to American animation. The soundtrack and voice acting are both extremely well-done (seriously, watch the show dubbed), and the sheer amount of pop culture references it manages to squeeze in with such a short runtime is impressive, proving it to truly be a tribute to the American pop culture that inspired the creators. A lot of the episodes are deeply creative and inventive in both their concepts and their execution in a way that made me desperately want to see more. Not to mention that, at the end of the show, it gets a bit introspective, showing character development from Panty (the much more dysfunctional and selfish of the two sisters) in a way that is genuinely touching and endearing. And in the midst of that introspection is a badass fight made of nothing but sakuga and crack that is the perfect culmination of everything the previous 12 episodes had been building to.

As an American anime fan, Panty and Stocking is a show I am so deeply appreciative to for showing that my love of Japanese pop culture is 100% requited, and it is a testament to one of humanity’s best qualities: appreciation for experiences that are not our own, and love for people so different from us.

But man, is it really, *really* hard to watch at times.

Yeah that's about as attractive as the rest of the series.

The best way to think of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is to imagine the powerpuff girls doing porn.

First up, it fails as a comedy. I mean it fails really hard. The jokes are all desperately stupid. They are on the level of somebody taking a plate s**t and smacking themselves in the face with it over and over again, and cackling everytime. It's not funny to begin with and it gets old fast.

Next up ? There is no next up. There's no story no character ... development. It doesn't try so there's nothing to evaluate.

The Art: Well it's kind of interesting and different. The best way to think of it would be chibi Stripperella with brief moments of more suggestive material. The creators said they were trying to parody American style animation, but lets face we had already parodied our own animation in exactly the same way long before. This sort of thing had been the Cartoon Network late night lineup forever.

Music: About the one good spot of the animation. If you really want to enjoy this animation get the soundtrack albums and watch them with a visualizer on your music player. Something trippy with girls dancing would perfect as a background.

TL:DR bad anime, get the soundtrack album if you want to enjoy it.
