Detective Conan Movie 01: The Timed Skyscraper

The first movie of the Detective Conan series.

Let me fill you in on the story, Conan (Shinichi) has to find a mad bomber, who's been setting fire to buildings and blowing up other things. Bomb after bomb, Conan finds his way to the criminal, but there's always a parting gift from the villian's.

The story is pretty basic, but it's enjoyable, it's well organized and done pretty simple, yet impressive, the "final touch" was brilliant. Expect some anti-climax...es here. It suprised me at least.

The art is very good, it's the same ol' Conan style, yet it's been animated pretty good, hope this will be getting better with each movie.

We still have the same ol' cast, introduced with 2 new characters, the villian and a police officer, the characters that are always in Conan are still the same, so good. Mouri's desperate love for Ran was done pretty well to if I have to say it. The villian is this bad-ass rich ugly person, which is almost standard, the meaning behind his terroristic attacks are unbelievable stupid, but maybe it's just the way "they" (the job he performs) think. The police officer is cool too, pretty plain guy, but he's not the guy he seems to be.

Overall a good sound, though I give it a lower point since I still don't agree on Det.Mouri's voice-actor.

Highly enjoyable movie, if you like or if you don't like Conan. Beautifully animated, good simple story, well organized and good dialogue's.

after done rewatching this movie i just thought "ah why don't i try writing a review about it" and here i am. let's start the review

Story: 6
well the story is nothing unusual for a detective genre. the culprit called the detective and challenged him to found the bomb that he planted and give him some clue to solve it. not the most original thing but enjoyable

Art: 7
the animation are pretty well done. not jaw gaping but fluid enough for eyes and the rest is the usual detective conan art style if you like it then you will like the one here too.

Sound: 6
it reuse the same soundtrack from the tv series and there is only 1 new standout soundtrack in through the end, i don't know if there is any new soundtrack outside of that. nothing too bad but not great either

Character: 5
the usual detective conan cast with only 4 noteable new character: moriya, shiratori, the mayor and his son. moriya is a symmetrical freak, shiratori....um.... likes architecture? and the mayor and his son doesn't have time to show personality. that's a shame since when i see a movie i pay attention more to the new character since i already knows the other character from the tv series

Well, first of all, I gotta tell you, I was a little bit surprised when I realised this movie has only one review. I personally think that this is a must watch movie for all the Detective Conan fans out there.
Anyway, lets begin:

Plot: 8
I really liked the plot. I mean, don't expect something outstanding, but it was honestly good. Shinichi, who is trapped in the body of young Conan, has to deal with someone who planted bombs all over the city. As I said earlier, the plot isn't the most original thing you'll ever see, but it's good.

Art: 10
Let's talk about the art. It's amazing, I mean, I like the character design and the animation in the anime series, but the movie was something else. Seriously, it felt like they tried so hatd to make the animation perfect- and let me tell you a little something- they succeded.

Sound: 7
Well, there's honestly not much to talk about here. I mean, there was a quite nice soundtrack, but not something honestly amazing.

Enjoyment: 9
I really enhoyed this movie. It's a good movie that has the Detective Conan spirit in it, and I had an amazing time watching it.

Overall: 8
This movie is good. If you consider yourself a Detective Conan fan and you haven't watched it, then well, joke's on you, because this move is very fun and enjoyble, as I mentioned before. Go watch it!

As anyone who might have watched my anime list should know, I’ve been watching Detective Conan as of late and overall been enjoying myself. Of course, there’s no way in hell I’ll review the whole show until it’s over, as by that point the review would likely be outdated. What I can review, however, are the movies.

Like more than a few long running Shounen, Detective Conan has a series of annual movies that are still ongoing. In most other Shounen series, these movies are a continuity nightmare, not only with their release schedule not matching up with the events that are happening in both the anime and the manga, but often contradicting said elements as well. Thankfully, Detective Conan mostly averts this. Oh sure, none of the movies are canon (At best elements of them are, but not much else), but aside from the fact that Kaito Kid knows Conan’s identity, they rarely if ever contradict canon. Also, thankfully the writing quality of these movies is usually above that of the average DC filler.

So here, we’ll take a look at the first movie: The Timed Skyscraper. Like with my Kara No Kyoukai reviews, these are gonna be done not only in a more retrospective-like fashion, but are also gonna be way more spoiler centric. So, let’s enjoy the show:

By premise alone this movie is definitely different that most arcs in the show. Most of those are murder cases, with only a few cases of robbery and stuff like that. Here we have a case of serial bombings, not something you’d often see in this Manga. Really, it’s just fun having the cast trying to find out not just who the culprit is, but also when the next accident will happen.

This movie also sets up a few trends for later movies down the line. My favorite of these is that Yamaguchi Kappei will always get at least a few lines of dialogue. It’s often only one or two lines (Though sometimes he will get a complete conversation, mostly in the movies involving Kaito as he also voices him), but I think that’s more than enough. It helps the audience remember what the ultimate tragedy that started out the plot is while also giving the audience a tiny bit of Fanservice. My least favorite is that Agasa will always think of some pun related quiz. I’ll give Ogata Kenichi credit for being able to make so many of these, but it’s just tiresome after a while, and the kids seem to agree with me on this one.

Probably the most important thing to come out of this movie though, is the inclusion of the character of Shiratori Ninzaburou, played by the Great Late Shiozawa Kaneto. His role in this movie is mostly minor; however he serves a good job as a secondary inspector and a younger foil to both Megure and Kogoro. He was actually popular enough that he was brought over to the Manga… though there is a bit of a discrepancy in his backstory in that the show introduced him as Takagi’s senior by a few years (Almost a year if you wanna stretch it) even though he’s a rookie in this movie and Takagi was already a background character in the Anime. To be fair, Takagi did take longer to appear in the Manga compared to the anime but even so continuity wise this movie can’t take place more than a few weeks before Takagi’s debut in the manga so-You know what, I’m just gonna stop thinking about it.

Anyhow, as a first movie, it’s certainly not as risky as some of the later ones. There aren’t that many big explorations of the characters statuses, its plot is relatively tame, so that’s certainly a point against it. It also started the trend of these movies having terrible culprits. I swear almost every culprit in these movies is either a sociopath or is straight up insane. And yeah, the culprit this time around is a crazy perfectionist. Hell, the big action sequence in this one is frankly tame compared to some of the later movies. Not only does it happen halfway through, but it’s just a random chase of sorts.

That said; there is one thing that elevates this movie slightly above the rest: The climax. Ran is stuck in a flaming building, and all Shinichi can do is try and guide her to disarm the final bomb. It’s legitimately intense, and Yamaguchi Kappei, Takayama Minami and Yamazaki Wakana all did a fantastic job. Definitely the highlight of the movie.

So overall, this is a solid first attempt. The movie may not break any new grounds, but it’s still an enjoyable mystery and I quite liked it. Definitely recommended.
