Adult Swim (stylized as [adult swim] or abbreviated as [as]) is an American timeshare cable television network bundled with Cartoon Network. The programs featured on Adult Swim are geared toward teens and young adults. Broadcast since 2001, much of the network's general content is known for its risqué, unorthodox and often bizarre presentation, while many of the series' features are developed in stark contrast with traditional American television programs. The block features stylistically varied animated and live-action shows including original programming, syndicated shows and Japanese anime, generally with minimal or no editing for content.

Classic 20th-century series and films that most old-school otaku have heard of and many older fans will cite as the reason they became a life-long weeb in the first place. Some have gotten sequels or modern reboots, while others have been relegated to the past and stand alone as fondly-remembered products of their time. If you want to take a journey through anime history, these shows are the place to start!

Additional info as requested by MAL staff:

Definition of classic: "A work of art of recognized and established value."

Criteria for this list: Were popular or well-known at some point during the 20th century, or were based on well-known source material of the time.

In this stack each prefecture will have only one representative and the direction will be by the Japanese ISO (ISO 3166-2:JP).

The works chosen are personal choices, so it doesn't mean that the anime will be the highest representation of that region.

For more, check out "Largest groups" on Chiaki: https://chiaki.site/?/tools/watch_order_groups/type/large
(Note: Count may not be always accurate.)

I've also included:
- "Watch order guides" by other users I find helpful and for convenience; number of entries included.
- Some clubs (mostly the ones with the most members), if you want to join one and maybe revive some.
- Anime Watching Challenges by the Anime Watching Challenges Club [AWCc] (https://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=70446); also check AWCc's Hall of Fame [HoF] (https://anime.jhiday.net/hof/).
- Live action adaptations (Ctrl + F in the [[ Live Action Adaptations ]] club (https://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=5450) or use their script).

I'll be updating this from time to time so the entries will change.

*Inspired by this thread: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2032254 (Which anime franchise has the most MAL entries?)

---

Legend:
🥇🥈🥉 - Gold, Silver, Bronze = Top 3
🔺 - Moved Up (risen in the rankings with new addition/s in the DB)
🔻 - Moved Down (something was removed in the DB)
✔️ - Description Box is up-to-date. Other stacks (number of entries, title change), challenges and clubs (status/activity) checked.
❗️WIP! - Work in progress (means I'm working on a watch order guide stack)

---

P.S. Everything would look clean if they just enable BBCode for stacks.

P.P.S. I made a second stack for 51-100. So I could just move some of the entries to the other stack instead of really deleting them.

Also, watch out for Pororo! He'll slowly climb to the top 50.

Because it's pretty much impossible to understand otherwise and all of the lists that exist are... inconsistent. This is based on the list fictionhorizon made. I haven't watched it myself, so if there are any issues, feel free to hit me up with corrections.

Part Three of the retro sensation that is gripping the nation! For better or worse these are the anime worth your time from days gone by.

Part One: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/30488
Part Two: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/30490
Part Four: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/30811

Note: Moderators had taken down the stacks before, since it was not wholly information based. I will post this as a note as to why such series are essential in order to defend them all as a blanket statement.

Most of the series featured have some sort of significance in terms of first best or darkest for their era which can be categorized by decennium or part of a decennium (early, middle, late). These are mixed around in order in order to give those who subscribed to list a challenge. While I could give an individual breakdown, I think some research is better left up to those who have subscribed to the stacks, since this allows for additional cultural insight into what was popular in Japan at the time, which is sometimes disconnected from the United States, as well as the rest of North America and Europe in many ways. For example, the Crayon Shin-Chan that aired in the United States and Canada is different to the one that aired in Europe, is different to the one that aired in Japan. By recommending to seek out Japanese versions of series, it grows understanding. I am not the first one to have thought of this. In the United States, there used to be a channel called ImaginAsian TV which had the same purpose of informing people about Japanese popular culture through anime. The San Francisco and San Diego PBS stations did the same thing and NHK World Japan carries this on through series like Little Charo and previously Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san.

I think it is agreed upon that retro is a niche, but with handicaps on subject matter like availability.

An assorted stack of anime series involving alien characters on Earth or set in alien planets.

For anime with sequels, only the first seasons of each have been included in the stack. The genres include (but are not limited to) Comedy, Drama, Romance, and Action
