Synopsis

Dreaming of rising up in the world, Chibisuke the little bonze travels to the city, where he becomes a retainer to a Cabinet minister, who takes a liking to Chibisuke who dances for him in his palm. One day, Chibisuke is accompanying a princess to Shimizu when a mountain devil attacks her. Chibisuke makes numerous surprise attacks on the devil before finally overcoming him, and using a horn of plenty left behind by the devil, he ends up a strapping young man.

A very delightful and well preserved short that has elements of Jack and the beanstalk, the BFG, Thumbelina and Gulliver's Travels mixed with more Japanese tropes of feudal responsibilities and loyalty to the crown being the root of all advancement. Tiny Chibisuke indeed undertakes a big adventure here of David meeting Goliath levels of allegory. You also see in this short the seeds of inspiration for the future generation of artists who take the metaphorical implications at play here and elevate them to the cosmic scale with Kaijuu and Mecha anime and films with the play on the disparity in size and strength in ...

Story
Introduction was nicely told through narration.

Conclusion made scene for it referred back to the introduction.

I was not please that their was little in terms of background on the main male character's origin.
