The events of both anime are set in the same era. The character designs are similar, especially their clothing. They are both based on Japanese folklore. The main characters of both anime reject their suitors. 

Both are short animated films by Kihachiro Kawamoto. Both are based on old legends, so they both have similar historic backgrounds, as well as similar mythological creatures, such as demons or giant serpents. Both are animated using dolls and stop-motion animation. The method of storytelling is also quite similar, as well as the mood and atmosphere they create.
