Meitantei Conan Movie 28: Sekigan no Flashback

At this point, Detective Conan movies are formulaic...in a good way. They utilize the massive, diverse cast in the franchise and build the movie off character interactions/relationships and over-the-top action sequences. M28 is no exception. The movie builds off of the Nagano trio and Conan's dynamics quite well, as it manages to fill the theater with laughter, with grief, and with drama.

In addition, this movie, at its core, is a police drama, which has always been a superior setting for Conan movies outside of the Black Organization movies.

Outside of a few weird cuts and usual Detective Boys fillers that should be removed from the ... movies permanently (which they can't, I understand), the movie remains mostly consistent in tone. The case is presented in a logical, engaging manner. The only cons of the movie are an underwhelming villain and the ridiculous action sequence at the end, but neither detracts from the movie all that much.

While the movie doesn't quite reach the heights of M26 or the older classics, it's still an enjoyable time at the theaters for long-time Conan fans. A well-deserved box office draw. I think it is very impressive that the movies have been consistently above average to great since M25, and I will continue to watch these movies in theaters until they stop making them.

From all Detective Conan's movie, this was the most worth watching. Maybe all of this review were heavy on my personal thoughts because I am a big fan of Nagano Trio which the one have the most spotlight on this movie. This movie were also my second detco movie that I watched on cinema, so this review were likely just my first impression. Also this might slightly spoilers.

First of all, I love this movie's casts, although there were some casts that doesn't have an important role to the story (like, how to say yea, there is Kuroda on the poster but at the movie he ... just had one time screentime. Takagi and Sato had more screentime than him even though they weren't on the poster) and I personally hate that lol. But the rest of the casts are mostly doing a good job, and if you are also a Nagano Trio glazer too, I highly recommended this movie to watch.

Second, the case. The pace to explain the case was pretty fast and I almost didn't get what the motive. But maybe we will get it and understand if we rewatch it (yeah more time to wait the BD version one). I don't think the case is really that special because this movie were meaning to give the explanation about the plot hole on the series (basically this movie just tell you about what happened when and how Kansuke's accident was). They can do this movie into special episodes but rather than that, they chose to made it into movie (I don't complain tho, this is still good as a first movie featured Nagano Trio as main casts)

Third, the action. I love the action so much. all of them are most likely pretty important to the movie. If you want a really good detective film scene that has a lot shooting and chasing parts, this was made for you, maybe, because animation can't be really good as in the real life adaptation.

Lastly, let me talk about the casts again. Nagano Trio have a really good performance here. Their chemistry is so heartwarming. You can tell how Kansuke was cared by both Yui and Komei, vice versa, Kansuke is really care to both Yui and Komei. You can't separated them, never, they were made like one package. This movie is good to how did it telling about Nagano Trio. Nonetheless this movie is making a pretty bad spotlight to Kogoro. But I personally love how this movie explain that. Showing what Kogoro do instead of making a yapping section for Kogoro only is indeed a good choice that made me respect more to Kogoro. How Kogoro just silently shoots with his skill is just wow, I'm speechless. But yeah, the movie could say more about the relationships between Kogoro and Wani, I want it more. And I love how Kogoro cares a lot to Conan again, it was pretty rare to see them like a real dad and son relationship. Out of this casts chemistry, they were pretty good thought.

In conclusion, this movie had awakened the most interesting part about police stories and the action supported it the most. Yeah but I don't recommend it if you hate Nagano Trio, they surely had the most spotlight here. This was my first review and I'm sorry if there was a mistake since English isn't my first language too lol.

Last but not least, I love how they showed the morally grey Amuro here, haha.

This movie was simply boring. I’ve seen almost every Detective Conan film, and I understand these are often made for commercial purposes with no real impact on the overall plot, but this one crosses a line by being boring to the point of offensive.

From a commercial or tourism angle, it does its job: promoting Nagano, showcasing its snowy scenery, star-filled skies, and scenic atmosphere. As a promotional piece, it succeeds. But as a crime thriller or action movie, it completely fails.

The movie opens with two disjointed, clumsy crimes that feel abrupt and unconnected, giving viewers no time to settle in or understand what’s happening. Even ... worse, there are already unintentional hints at the solution during the Conan intro monologue, which ruins the mystery before it even begins. The central case itself is incredibly dull. Each time a key character shows up, the film practically screams at the audience to pay attention, repeating themselves unnecessarily. And then there’s the swarm of police characters pulled from the main series, many of whom are given little to no purpose or screen time. Even the core focus, the Nagano police force, is underwhelming and never truly shines.

The structure of the crimes is sloppy; each new crime simply serves to narrow the already limited suspect list, which makes the mystery far too easy to solve. If not for the obscure and convoluted motive, most viewers would have figured out the culprit before the halfway point. And that motive? Unrealistically complicated and not emotionally convincing.

The action scenes, which usually help cover up a weak story in other Conan movies, don’t do the job here either. There's no real tension or stakes. Between the heavy exposition dumps, repetitive explanations, and forced use of the snow-and-stars setting, the film feels like a drag. Honestly, it barely qualifies as a passable episode for the TV series, let alone deserving of a full theatrical release.
