Doraemon Movie 44: Nobita no E Sekai Monogatari

Nobita’s Art World Tales isn’t what you’d call breathtakingly mature or complex. Some story beats are wrapped up a little too conveniently, and a few moments that caught my attention end up being waved away with the all-too-familiar “it’s for kids” excuse. But despite that, the film manages something that’s genuinely impressive: it juggles multiple narrative threads and pulls them together with real care. Plotlines converge at just the right moments, setups pay off smoothly, and even details that seemed irrelevant at first find their way back into the central narrative

What’s even rarer is that, from Nobita’s perspective, this is a full arc—a story with ... a beginning, a return, and emotional movement in between. You can feel his mindset gradually shifting, almost without noticing, from self-doubt to a quiet, renewed sense of purpose

If Thunderbolts was about lonely souls becoming the shadows that darken New York, Nobita’s Art World Tales gives us a different kind of visual metaphor: colors—symbols of life and creativity—are being swallowed up, leaving behind a world washed out in blank white. And where shadows are heavy and suffocating, the absence of color feels like something else entirely—an emptiness, the kind that lingers when inspiration dries up and you start losing faith in yourself. Not pain, but silence, or a quiet resignation

Which is exactly why, when the film finally circles back to its core message, its resolution feels all the more genuine. Not grand, not flawless—but honest in a way that matters

I am 20 and I want to say Doraemon movies never bore me. They always fill my heart with lots of emotions. I feel they should never stop making Doraemon movies. The art style is very good and I like it very very much.
Doraemon movies have been a part of my childhood and beyond. While some might say the plot follows a familiar "Doraemon formula," I actually enjoy that predictability, it’s comforting, like coming home. The characters remain true to form.
Long time Doraemon fans will love it for the nostalgia and heart and new viewers especially kids will be charmed. If you ... enjoy feel-good adventures with meaningful messages about courage and friendship, this movie is a must watch.

Overall take: Creative premise and great thematic message. But pacing was not very good first half although it improved halfway in with some good action scenes towards the climax. Story setting is a little cluttered with some unnecessary things.

The overall message of Nobita and him learning to understand what "art" is was such a nice message. The whole movie did a really good job working around the theme of art. The film also did a good job giving each main character some spotlight time. We also get to see some depth in Claire's character, which was required to pull ... off the scene with two of them. Recent Doraemon films have also done increasingly well on realistically capturing the dynamic between Nobita's parents.

So, the problem areas... first the pacing. There were so many questions and mysteries that came out at the beginning that they distracted me. Yet the movie hardly offered any hints, let alone answer any questions until about an hour into the film. The final battle scene seemed to drag on after a while too. The movie measures to about 1 hour and 45 minutes, but I don't think it needed to be this long.

Another problem I have is with the setting: 13th Century undiscovered kingdom Artoria. The artworks that were discovered resembled nothing of the medieval art style of the 13th Century. If you're going to do a movie about art, you can't mess up historical accuracy, especially in a kids movie. The movie also fails to strongly justify the use of an undiscovered kingdom as the setting (i.e., why didn't they just make the setting Renaissance-era Spain or something?). It would still be a solid movie without the thing about "undiscovered kingdom" or without the special paint that gets the unique color.

I wanted Mairo to have more depth in his character, especially since he was given the good-old obligatory "Nobita wakes up in the middle of the night to find guest character also awake and bonds overnight" scene. Pal's voice acting was subpar, though I guess that helped to enhance the misunderstanding that was scripted in the middle of the movie.

It took about halfway in until I really started enjoying the film, but the latter half was very enjoyable. Pacing in the first half felt like it dragged but introduced a great theme. Children may need a good attention span to get into this movie.
