Maebashi Witches

In the city of Maebashi, Yuina Akagi is a free-spirited high school girl with a hobby of buying trendy clothes online and taking photos of her life's highlights. One day, a talking frog suddenly speaks to her, sees in her the potential to become a witch, and transports her to the Witch-Verse. There, the frog introduces Yuina to four other girls he has recruited—the cheerful Choco Mitsumata; the composed Kyouka Kitahara; the easygoing Mai Kamiizumi; and the short-fused Azu Niisato who is apprehensive of Yuina's arrival.

Despite the initial clash of personalities, the five girls aim to become true witches. To achieve that goal, they must grant people's wishes in the real world through music—the most efficient conduit for channeling magic. As Yuina learns to control her newfound powers, her journey into a magical life helping others will be far more vibrant than any photo her camera can ever hope to capture.

This anime is about a group of young magical girls(witches) who must grant wishes to regular people so they can become full time witches with more unrestrained power. Its a nice looking anime which only looked bad during idol song & dance sequences when it switched to CGI. The show is primarily for young girls. If you are a boy you might have hard time with the show, as the show is very girly.

This is a good shoujo show, and I am not the target audience. There is hardly any male characters in the show. The clients the witches grant wishes too are also girls ... or women. And the wishes are very grounded. Nobody wishes for a million dollars, or super powers or immortality. So it never gets too overly exciting. I think it is a positive for the show.

Though I haven't seen a ton of Shoujo, this does feel unique enough even though the familiar(magical creature) recruiting girls to become magical girls is a common troupe. And guess what it is a original show, not one that is derived from manga or light novels.

To my surprise, i liked the anime.
Of course there are problems here, but i don't want to spoiler it. It's not a new madoka, but it's very good in the idol genre.

The characters have flaws, the characters change, the anime sometimes raises serious topics. Some are very nasty, and in others you want to say "this is literally me".

Very beautiful design and good animation, but 3d is the average.

I honestly didn't like the songs, but i guess the lyrics are good? I just didn't have subtitles for the songs so it's hard to say, but i guess every song is related to ... the plot. But again, i'm not an idol fan and i don't listen to that. I prefer girls bands (for an example girls band cry), but almost not listen to idols.

I watched mostly for the plot and the characters. It's not something brilliant, but it was interesting for me and i think that's the most important thing. Sometimes the characters had very clever and philosophical discussions.
The main problem of the anime is the frog, the main advantage is the relationship between Yuina and Azu. And the entire Choco arc.

Also it's a little hard for me to believe that this is the first anime for most seiyuu. They did a good job.

Mixed Feelings

'Maebashi Witches' is one of Spring 2025's anime about witches. It has some decent animation, but some episodes are infuriating.


§ Overview

In the city of Maebashi, a free-spirited girl named Akagi Yuina is summoned by a frog named Keroppe. Together with four other girls, they run a flower shop, granting wishes. This earns them mapo or magical power, and by earning 10,000 mapo, they officially become witches, imbued with powers that will let them do whatever they want. This is their witch training, and they call themselves the Maebashi Witches.


§ Let's talk about this anime's strengths.

§§ It has some decent-to-acceptable character designs that somewhat help ... each character stand out — at least slightly — from the sea of forgettable characters. The girls are cute and lovable, even if they are common character types.


§§ It has good production values, at least for something not usually given a budget. I love how they perform, sing songs, and dance as they grant a customer's wish. You are watching a few minutes of the anime to see their performance. It is like an idol anime, but they're not really idols. Although this doesn't add to the narrative, it adds to the experience.

It's CG and some might not like it, but it's not bad. In fact, to their credit, each song-and-dance sequence is the best part of this anime.

§§ It is character-driven. Each character has a backstory on why she wants to be a witch. A character wants to improve her chances of effecting changes for the city of Maebashi, one wants to change her physical appearance, another wants to rise up from poverty, etc.

Overall, the point of this anime is not about reaching their goal. It's about their friendship and how it deepens along the way.


§ Let's talk about this anime's weaknesses, the very things that make watching this unpleasant.


§§ I didn't like that Keroppe is a trickster instead of a mentor figure. He only explains certain rules once our girls violate one, thereby depleting mapo. He only explains the consequences of something if the girls are near the danger point. This is not tough love. This is torture!

I can't help but feel the writer is making things up as they go.

Before I forget, the use of mapo gives it certain conveniences, but at the price of depleting the mapo. Keroppe constantly tempts them to use mapo, not to help but to keep them from reaching their goal sooner.


§§ Some of the drama in this anime is the result of them having no brains, leading to questionable decision-making, and it makes you want to enter the TV screen and slap some sense into them.


§§ It suffers from the use of deus ex machina in the last few episodes to save our witches from totally forgetting who they are and why they wanted to be witches.

It is due to the foregoing reasons that I am only rating this a 4 out of 10.


§ Conclusion

'Maebashi Witches' on its own can be an acceptable anime, one that you watch to pass the time. It reinforces the values of friendship, and any decent human being can and does appreciate this aspect. It's just that it won't prevent you from getting annoyed by some of the things in the anime.


NOTA BENE: A grade of 4 out of 10 means I got some enjoyment out of this anime, but the issues are glaring, or simply I rank it higher than my 3's but below my 5's.

My enjoyment spectrum lies from 4 to 10. If I have scored an anime below 4, I actively dislike it.
