Apocalypse Hotel

In the year 2157, Gingarou Hotel, a luxury establishment in Ginza, Tokyo, employs advanced hotelier robots to provide best-in-class hospitality. Unfortunately, no one has visited the hotel in decades, as humanity has long abandoned Earth due to its toxic atmosphere.

Yachiyo, the robot "acting acting manager," works tirelessly every day alongside her mechanical crew to keep the hotel running in tip-top shape. Over the years, many employees have ceased functioning, with no hope of repair or replacement. Still, Yachiyo continues to fulfill her duties, just as she promised the hotel's owner before his departure. She remains optimistic that humanity will one day return to Earth—and that she will see the owner again.

Welcome to the Gingarou Hotel!

Apocalypse Hotel’s all about the vibes; light hearted and breaming with hope while having a depressing premise as a backdrop. The overarching storyline felt weak due to its episodic nature. Storyline aside, the series has a lot to offer; interesting premise, likable but also slightly generic characters, goofy moments, tear jerkers and gorgeous visuals. The moments of world exploration and hotel developments tidbits are my favourites by far! I also often find myself looking forward to the different life forms introduced in this series. In hindsight, the series could have benefited from more world building moments.

Ultimately, Apocalypse Hotel was a pleasant ... surprise. It serves its niche as a filler/palate cleanser anime well and I’ll caution anyone going into the series expecting anything more than that. All in all, it was time well-spent on an enjoyable 12-episode ride!

Mixed Feelings

“Time isn’t something you lose. It changes constantly and adds layers to your life.”

Apocalypse Hotel is a 12 episode anime series that was released in 2025 and was animated by CygamesPictutes, a company known for their mobile games and anime adaptions based on those mobile games, though this one was an original story. The series was directed by Kana Shundo, who had previously only directed a single episode of Princess Connect! Re: Dive.

The series is about a hotel ran by a few robot employees after humanity leaves Earth due to the air becoming toxic to primates - their goal is to keep the hotel running ... until humanity, and especially their hotel’s owner, returns. As decades, and eventually centuries, begin to pass, it seems less and less likely that humanity will ever make the voyage back to Earth.

Though at first the robots idly tend to their daily tasks of keeping the hotel running without any guests, they soon start to receive one after another of extraterrestrial visitors staying at their hotel.

The anime had an incredibly strong first episode, juxtaposing the hotel’s introductions and core values with the fate of humanity as the first waves of the toxicity spread, showing some strong resemblances to the real world experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. From there, though, the premise began to fizzle out. While it was often fun and even endearing to see the different alien species visit the hotel, it felt as though the story and the characters within were always just on the cusp of strong ideas and themes without ever really touching them.

Towards the middle of the 12 episode run, the episodic formula became a hindrance to the plot as elements began to feel shoehorned in, and emotional beats failed to land as they never felt earned; character arcs would see their conclusions without ever really beginning. The penultimate episode of the series would end up being the best of the run, packing a lot of emotional weight into a near silent episode, just showing the remains of humanity on an abandoned Earth through the eyes of a robot still struggling to learn how to feel empathy for others. If that emotional weight was able to be genuinely felt through the rest of the series, then Apocalypse Hotel would have been much better off.

As it stands, while Apocalypse Hotel had a really refreshing premise with a really strong opening and closing, everything in between bogged that strong premise down, resulting in a sometimes fun, but often lacking story. In terms of the list I’m creating for the Definitive Top 100 Anime of All Time List, it may not be a contender, and if it ends up on the list would have to be low 90s.

Preliminary (4/12 eps)

The purpose of this review is a warning that the current score <8.01> and the current rank <682> are far too high.
It would have you believe there is a slow buildup, a sudden drastic change, or some catch to this series when there is not.
The starting episode is a good indication of the depth of characterization to expect, the mildness of humor, the plot's focus, and design quality of characters.


STORY
This is the best the anime has to offer and it is interesting,
but the story is just a setup for the setting. The parts making it interesting have little consequence for episode plots.

PLOT
It leans towards slice ... of life. By all rights a slice of life with this setting should be equally as interesting as the story but it is not,
and that is because most of the characters don't much qualify as characters and the protagonist is wasted upon boring circumstances.
What comedy there is is too sparse. It is less funny and less often than some other series(s) which are not even comedy so I wonder why even the comedy tag.

CHARACTER DESIGNS
The protagonist's is OK. The robots SUCK. They are the smooth generic ovular uninspired junk of modernity. The product of imagining the bleakest, blandest outlook of a future imaginable and not in the meaning of apocalypse.
The designs of the robots have to be the single biggest flaw. I can go dig for an episode of The Jetsons for a less visually boring futuristic robot, yes even the toaster with eyes and tiara.
The draw of anime originals is in creativity and that kind of tastelessly dull robot is a prime indication of creative bankruptcy & inspiration.
Our first new character is acceptable. Our new characters after that had poor designs. They look like they lack life.

ETC
For anime of late this is average. It is pretty boring and I don't care about the characters but at least the plot within is steady.
For good anime this is significantly below average.
On top of Dubtitles just making shit up. I will not judge the series for something having nothing to do with it though, just be aware they make it worse.


I recommend this to noone.
If you want a good slice of life with robots go see Eve no Jikan OVA.
