Life hasn't been kind to Zenos. He was born in the slums, and his dirt-poor background has denied him almost every opportunity. After an encounter with a healer, he throws himself into studying to become one and finally catches a break when an adventurer invites Zenos into his party. Zenos is thrilled—so thrilled, in fact, that he's willing to put up with his teammates treating him like garbage. They fail to appreciate his talents and ultimately kick him to the curb, claiming he's outlived his usefulness to them.

Now bereft of money and out of options, Zenos decides to put his self-taught skills to use elsewhere and opens an underground clinic. Word quickly spreads about the brilliant healer working incredible magic in the city's shadowy underbelly. Even the royal palace is taking notice...

Can Zenos buck the odds and carve out a life for himself in a world that's spit in his face? And can he save the lives of the patients who wind up on his doorstep in the process?

Preliminary (4/12 eps)

Don’t let the long title or familiar trope fool you - this anime is far more than the average “banished healer” trope. While some might dismiss it based on the premise, Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni... deserves far more credit than it’s getting!
This anime is EASILY the one I'm enjoying the most this season!

What truly sets this series apart is its subtle and clever comedy. The writer manages to sneak in humor that feels organic and character-driven rather than relying on gags or forced punchlines. Whether it’s a dry remark from the protagonist or an ironic twist in a dramatic moment, the anime maintains ... a self-awareness that’s refreshingly smart. It’s the kind of humor that doesn’t beg for your attention - it just lands naturally, which makes it all the more satisfying. Episode 4 was pretty amazing and the reason I decided to write this review. If it continues with this approach, I'm sure this will be an amazing anime!

The narrative itself is well-paced and heartfelt. The main character’s growth from an outcast to a confident "dark healer" isn’t just about revenge or proving others wrong - it's about reclaiming identity and finding joy in unexpected places. The supporting cast is charming, and the world-building, while not revolutionary provides enough depth to keep things engaging.

It’s unfortunate that many of the negative reviews stem from a bias against the “banished genius” and harem trope. Yes, the setup is familiar, but the execution here is anything but lazy. The story takes that premise and adds depth, humor, and a fresh tone that elevates it far above the cookie-cutter narratives people expect from this sub-genre.

In short: if you skip this one because of the trope, you’re missing out on a genuinely entertaining and cleverly written. Give it a chance -you might just be surprised by how much you enjoy it.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows tries to lure you in with a scrappy healer overcoming an apparent betrayal, but the mangled first three episodes from Studio Makaria feel like a half-baked pie. Based on a light novel, this adaptation follows a healer born in the slums who is abandoned by his party and opens a clinic in a slum for other outcasts. The underdog premise and cozy group have some charm. Still, the lazy writing, shallow depth, and shaky production make it a hard sell. Here's a breakdown of what works and doesn't work.

What Works: The core concept of a healer sticking ... it to the system by helping the downtrodden is pure heart and allows the story to have a grounded, feel-good pulse. Additionally, the idea of a clandestine clinic in this fantasy world stirs up intrigue about class and authority. Although not earth-shattering, the supporting cast has gregarious and lively banter that keeps things for the most part from going completely flat. The animation shines through during action scenes and the colorful magic effects bring a bit of sparkle to an otherwise gritty aesthetic. The opening track is a dance-pop banger that strikes the right optimistic vibe of the show.

What Tanks It: Overall, the story is a bore. It recycles every "kicked-out hero" trope with no freshness or stakes to speak of. The story feels limp as it lacks anticipation or surprises and the emotional beats feel to happen on autopilot. The lead healer character is a blank slate archetype - gritty but with zero real personality to grab you. The supporting cast (while fun) is a trove of fantasy archetype throwbacks and real depth. The animation stumbles hard during slower paced scenes: the movements feel stiff, the backgrounds appear dull, and the world feels cheap. The score feels forgettable and barely exists aside from the opening track and the sound design is sometimes so weak you do not even feel the tension of typical fights or moments of drama.

Overall, I was ready to cheer for this scrappy healer and his ragtag band - the heart to do so feels to be there - but the generic plot lines, dull lead character, and shaky visuals don't hold deliver. It has Banished from the Hero's Party energy without any of the polish. I can see where the more cozy bits may be appealing for ieakai fans. But setting this aside, this would need a serious kick to make it stand out.

Statement:
I will take Redo of the Healer over this crap 10 times out of 10.

Receipe for 95% of all shonen anime:
- make protagonist as bland and boring as inhumanly possible
- make him OP but brain damaged enough to believe they he is weak or average no matter what
- give him harem of various no_personality waifus so that all sad excuses for perverts can find their pick
- make protagonist even more brain damaged and emasculated so that he has no clue that he has harem and even less of clue what to do with it

Trust me, it wasn't interesting or fun cliche in ... last 100 shonen animes and it definitely doesn't get better 101th time ..

Do I hear an argument: "But wait, Redo of the Healer had harem too!"
Sure, but he damn well knew what to do with it and certainly wasn't shy to use it properly. He wasn't bland at all and knew pretty well how strong he is.
Hence my original statement.
