Mahoutsukai ni Narenakatta Onnanoko no Hanashi

From a young age, Kurumi Mirai has aspired to become a magician. Driven by her ambition, she has spent her childhood preparing to join the prestigious Rettoran Academy of Magic. Although Kurumi excels in the selection exam, her dream is crushed when she is not chosen for the elite magic class.

Admitted to the standard class at the academy instead, Kurumi soon befriends Maki Kumiiru, her new roommate; and Yuzu Edel, another girl unhappy with her placement. However, to everyone's surprise, their homeroom teacher, Minami Suzuki, promises to teach the class magic anyway. Although skeptical at first, the girls start to believe that this may be their second chance at realizing their dreams and becoming wonderful magicians.

Preliminary (4/12 eps)

First off, the strongest point of this show is that it is one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen! It uses so many lovely and bright colors, and the watercolor aesthetic makes things feel so cozy and friendly.

The characters all have fun designs, and they are mostly enjoyable to watch their interactions.

The story isn't especially unique or groundbreaking, but it's a story of underdogs fighting for their dreams, which is hard to do wrong. The magic system seems like it's interesting, but they haven't explained much about how it works, and I don't know if they ever will, but I'm okay ... with that. :P

Based on the end of the fourth episode, it looks like we're going to be transitioning from the setup portion of the show to the parts where a lot of stuff happens, which I'm looking forward to

While this show is EYE CANDY and the premise is fun, relatable, and true to the vibe of magical girls, this show is absolutely made for children and leans a little too hard into that.

The visuals will be stunning to any viewer as the bright colors, textures, and overall pallet give the world a fairytale feeling, like cracking open a nostalgic book from childhood. Frankly I think it's innovating in the kind of artwork a show can have by opting for something softer gives definition to the world around it.

It stays true to the magical girl genre while not leaning too hard into tropes ... and providing a unique experience, as well! A magician's school is certainly nothing new, but the specific lens they take on it regarding injustices between those with privilege and those at a disadvantage within the setting gives us underdogs to root for and conflict that doesn't stem around the antagonists being comically evil.

However, where this show greatly falls short is in the character writing.

While the main trio of Kurumi, Yuzu, and Maki have plenty of depth and life to their writing, the rest of the characters are one-note jokes that don't land. And there's specifically the problem with it being "made for kids." While it's fully possible to make comic relief characters intended to appeal to children, the impact is lessened when EVERYONE is just that. They're all given one trait and that trait is put forward to an EXTREME. There's very little to connect to and enjoy about anyone other than the main trio and Minami, instead making every moment that's not about them, to put it bluntly, a little cringe. The writers tried a little too hard to dumb characters down at the expense of losing any possible depth they could have had.

Preliminary (7/12 eps)

This anime is just inherently frustrating to watch.

While the visuals and art style are pretty to look at (even tho the actual animation leaves a lot to be desired, but hey this is J.C. Staff we're talking about), the anime just completely fails on the plot department, and this can really only be explained by a single, simple point: the characters are so agonizingly unmotivated.
Not only does it make the plot agonizing to watch through, as the MC gives up after only a couple failures (often not even trying at all!!!), it also completely contradicts anything we're told by the plot, as a couple of ... the main cast would do anything to become magicians and yet not even try to do what their teacher is teaching them.
Kurumi, the MC, is especially bad because of this, she's actually kinda charming, but her giving up at literally any point, despite the story starting by showing her working her ASS OFF to get into the magic school, is almost rage inducing at some points when she can't even move her own ass when her friends are in real danger. She just ends up becoming very unlikeable when she keeps talking about her dream of being a magician, being handed literally EVERYTHING she needs to become one, and not ONCE, NOT. ONCE. do you see her practice with the same fervent motivation that was shown in the first episode when she was studying for the entrance exams.

This anime could've been pretty decent, even good! But the writers just completely dropped the ball on the story, and the parts I mentioned aren't even close to being the only things that don't work in the story
