Make Heroine ga Oosugiru!

Despite not understanding much about fleeting teen romance, first-year high school student Kazuhiko Nukumizu still wonders how he would react if his life were to be turned into a love story. Regardless, as a self-proclaimed "background character," Nukumizu is satisfied continuing his life as an introvert with a negligible social life. However, he suddenly finds himself too close to the spotlight when he witnesses his popular classmate Anna Yanami be rejected by her childhood friend in the middle of a family restaurant.

While Nukumizu wishes he could just forget what he saw and move on, Anna ends up forcefully confiding herself in Nukumizu, lamenting her status as a childhood friend fated to have her beloved stolen. As he becomes dragged into Anna's situation, Nukumizu soon gets caught up in the relationship drama of two more girls: Lemon Yakishio, an outgoing member of the track and field club; and Chika Komari, a shy member of the literature club. Now thrust out of his comfort zone, Nukumizu finds himself a major character in the lives of too many losing heroines.

Each girl has a strong and distinct personality—Saki’s tsundere energy, Nagisa’s sweet-but-bold attitude, and then you get characters like Rika who turn up the absurdity even more. The protagonist is oddly honest (to a fault), which keeps things unpredictable.

Ini anime komedi cinta yang total chaos—protagonisnya pacaran sama dua cewek sekaligus, dan semuanya tahu. Ceritanya gak sok serius, malah sengaja dibikin absurd. Gak ada drama lebay, cuma rom-com kacau yang surprisingly seru.

Alurnya kayak kumpulan kejadian yang makin lama makin kacau. Cinta segitiga? Nggak cukup. Ini cinta segi lima. Tiap episode nambah keanehan dan kelucuan baru. Emang gak dalam, tapi konsisten ngasih hiburan.

Karakterisasi: 8,7/10
Semua ceweknya punya gaya masing-masing. Saki dengan tsunderenya, Nagisa yang kalem tapi nekat, terus Rika yang level gila-nya beda lagi. Si MC, Naoya, jujur banget—kadang sampai keterlaluan. Tapi justru itu yang bikin beda.

Mixed Feelings

Most new releases within the Romance genre in the 2020’s have been slightly underwhelming. The main highlights usually follow a classic narrative: MC meets Main Girl. They start forming a friendly relationship for some reason, sporadic romantic situations happen, and feelings begin to blossom.Even with each of these titles attempting to have their own “twist” to them, they have the same clichés and end up following the same path. This leads us to a situation where there are many individual titles, but they each have difficulties with establishing themselves as “unique”. This is especially the case with animes that don’t have comedy as their ... main focus point, as that relief that normally distracts the audience from the dull storyline is not consistent throughout.

Now we arrive at Makeine, a Comedy/Romance anime that was adapted from an original light novel by A1-pictures. The premise seemed simple to me, a loner MC meets a popular girl who just got rejected and they develop a romantic relationship. However I was proved wrong from the very beginning, as this anime did not center around the MC’s relationship, but rather how he handles interpersonal relationships with the main cast who all got rejected by their crushes. This was definitely new, as you never really see platonic relations like that being explored in romance anime, breaking the sequence that we had seen lately.

Now talking about the anime itself, I thought it executed its premise really well, with A1-pictures doing a great job animating this project. The colour pallet was utilized really well throughout, with different emotions being portrayed depending on the situations our characters found themselves in. Regarding the plot, I really enjoyed the way our characters navigated through their emotional situations, as it felt really coherent to feelings someone in our current reality could have. In one way or another it really reminded me of SNAFU, with the MC trying to go around and make everyone within the story at peace. Rejection is a difficult topic to handle, and although it can feel exaggerated at times within the story, the spectators could possibly relate. The characters feel like humans who have feelings and their own beliefs. Not everything they do makes sense, they are not all good and perfect, but that does not make us like them any less. I also felt like there were moments of great chemistry between the two main leads, which is often rare to find. Normally the introverted boy- extroverted girl combo is filled with clichés and cringe worthy moments, but this one felt slightly different, as the dialogue between them feels light and satisfying to watch. That might be due to the fact that nothing truly romantic happens between them, as they have an “friendly” relationship even with a few moments of slight romantic tension. In the end of the first season, it is hinted that some romance might have been developing underneath all the other things, but nothing was set in stone. I believe they will leave this possibly for the second season, which was already announced.

Now talking about the parts I didn’t necessarily enjoy, I believe the anime itself could have had more romance and less drama. Now that might sound hypocritical with me talking all high about how recent romance animes are clichés, but an anime which has romance as one of its main genres should have more than one scene of true romance. I believe they could have more moments between the two main characters, as their dynamic was just super great and could have been explored more. I also believe there could have been more substance to the main character, as he really just gets used as a plug-in piece for fixing people’s relationships. I believe some character development for him, especially through romance, would improve the overall flow.


In conclusion, Makeine:Too Many Losing Heroines is a Romance anime that does not have romance as its main focus, but does leave the spectator with a satisfying narrative about dealing with different emotions and interpersonal relationships. I personally believe this anime fits more under the Drama genre, and as much as I want to hate that, I find it enjoyable. Would I like a cliché story between the two leads where they show more of their dynamic in classic romance fashion more than what we have, probably… But this does not change the fact that through its real emotions and relatable characters, Makeine delivers, and I'm excited to watch season 2 looking for more romance.

This show was advertised as a romance anime "without the drama", but after the first few episodes, you realize that there's nothing BUT drama! The high rating here (around 8 at the time of writing) is definitely not deserved. The animation is very smooth and bouncy, and I believe this is the main reason it has such a high rating. However, the writing is terrible. Everything feels forced: the jokes, the drama, the cuteness, the romance... None of this flows naturally; it's not paced well. It's shoved into your face, especially the dramatic parts. While the show did get a couple of laughs from me ... here and there, most jokes just fell flat. The main female character is annoying, has little chemistry with the male MC, is the butt of a recurring joke that is not the least bit amusing (the food), and so to make up for all of this, they have to 'up' the cuteness factor with the animation. Of course, this doesn't work. As for the male MC, I still don't know what makes him unique or memorable. You've seen his type in countless other animes, and this one is just a blend of the usual loner-turned-social that just wants to 'help'. At the beginning, we are led to believe that the story will be a romance involving him and the female MC. But then a third of the way into the story, we have a bait and switch, and we focus heavily on other characters, leaving the romance behind, not to be touched on again until the very end. Speaking of which, the struggle to finish the last episode was real. I was checking the remaining minutes every so often. The tone of the last episode is so drastically different from the next-to-last one: from overly dramatic to chirpy and relaxed. It's jarring and off-putting, even more so when you realize that the writers tried to force the romance back again in the very last minutes. Do not waste your time on this one.
