"Oshi no Ko" 2nd Season

With the help of producer Masaya Kaburagi, Aquamarine "Aqua" Hoshino and Kana Arima have landed the roles of Touki and Tsurugi in Lala Lai Theatrical Company's stage adaptation of the popular manga series Tokyo Blade. Co-starring with them is Aqua's girlfriend, Akane Kurokawa, who plays Touki's fiancée, Princess Saya. Due to the fanbase preferring Tsurugi as Touki's love interest, Saya has made fewer and fewer appearances in the manga, making it difficult for Akane to fully immerse herself in the role. Her struggles are compounded by differences between the play's script and the original work—differences that also frustrate Tokyo Blade's author, Abiko Samejima.

Aqua, however, is more concerned with his personal goals than he is with the play. He has only one objective in mind: to grow closer to director Toshirou Kindaichi and find out what he knows about Aqua's mother, Ai.

I think this season is honestly gonna be superior to the season 1
Oshi no ko is still true to it's nature and that's the unravelling of the challenges of the entertainment industry
Honestly it's a breath of fresh air cuz stories like this are not really common and it's interesting seeing how things work out in the "behind the scenes" and it's being presented to the viewers in a creative, entertaining format, it's truly splendid

The second season seems to be exploring more on the theatre/acting part rather than the whole idol stuff and it's still a banger, we're introduced to great chars, well written conflicts and ... what challenges they have in the medium. Its educational yet fun to watch; the rivalry between akane and kana is always interesting

The Animation is even better in the second season the character designs and their facial expressions are even more fluid
The movement, Visuals all took a step up it's truly been amazing

The sound track and music are amazing too
Truly recommend watching this if you enjoyed the first season

Definitely a more mixed bag than season one. The Characters are likable and undergo decent development and the production quality and animation are great like season one.

What makes it worse are a few aspects.
First is that the plot strays far from what it's supposed to be. That being Aqua investigating the circumstances of Ai's death and Ruby doing anything with B Komachi. The season would almost work as a standalone show with some plotholes, it hardly builds up on the previous one.
The other problem is that there isnt two continuous minutes of plot without some flashback to some character's past, which gets really annoying after ... some time. It does give the characters more depth and backstory, which are important, but interweaving it in some mediocre stageplay, that is arduous to watch on its own with its cliché shonen troupes is not the way to go in my opinion.
I dont know the base material that the director needs to work with, but given that one of the major plotpoints at the beginning of the season is how to translate a story from one medium to another while keeping it interesting, it would be deeply ironic if that is where this fails.

A stunning season with a plot-less plot.

TLDR; Oshi no ko season 2 should have been a separate anime (except few scenes) rather than a sequel to the season 1. Maybe a side-story?

Edit: Alright I am taking one for you guys (I'll update this list as I watch the episodes), Fillers (About stage play/not related to story): Ep 1,2,3,6,7,8 ; Related to original story: None till now ; Mixed: Ep 4,5,9

When reviewing TV shows, I focus on engagement, animation quality, sound design, character design & development, and world-building. Unfortunately, even with impressive visuals and sound, a show can falter if the story doesn’t deliver.

🎨 Visuals & ... Sound:
The show excels in animation and soundtrack. The visuals and animation quality are smooth and detailed, and the soundtrack is enjoyable. Character designs are unique and well-crafted. Despite these strengths, the story’s weaknesses overshadow them.

📚 Genre & Storyline:
Initially, Oshi no Ko centered on the mystery of Hoshino Ai’s death and Aqua’s quest to uncover the truth. However, Season 2 shifts its focus to the stage play adaptation of Abiko Sensei’s manga. This change in focus makes the show feel more like a slice-of-life series rather than the supernatural drama it started as. The plot about the stage play doesn’t manage to be as engaging as the original storyline.

⏳ Lack of Progress:
By Episode 6, the story feels stagnant, with minimal progress since Season 1. Episodes 4 and 5 show some development, but it’s not enough compared to the momentum of the previous season. The story seems to drift without clear direction.

👥 Character Introduction:
The show struggles with character development. New characters are introduced abruptly and without much context, making it hard to grasp their significance. This rushed introduction can be overwhelming and hinders emotional connection.

⚖️ Peaks & Pitfalls:
Episodes 4 and 5 offer some promise but fail to maintain momentum. The show often feels visually stunning but lacking in substance, leaving viewers feeling disconnected. It rather generates a new mystery of why even those episode even exists and what they have got to do with the original story. Even the background soundtrack, which starts strong, sometimes feels mismatched with the visuals, affecting the overall experience.

📈 Final Verdict:
If you’re curious about this show, start with the first episode. If it grabs your attention, continue watching. You might enjoy it if you like SOL showbiz stories, but if it feels disjointed or unengaging with your expectation from the first season, try speeding it up (1.5x or 2x) to see if it improves. Episodes 4 and 5 might give you some hope, but if the story hasn’t hooked you by Episode 6, it might be time to move on.
