Bye Bye, Earth

After the first couple of episodes, I wasn't sure I'd like this show. I kind of trudged my feet along, not really feeling much for the main character. Boy, was that first impression ever wrong. My biggest complaint is that there are only going to be 10 episodes to this season, and it feels like its only getting started. The show has an interesting, sometimes surreal sense of world building that reminds me of the sort of mystical and curious feeling that I loved in the first season of Tower of God. It doesn't assume you are stupid and spoon feed you fact after fact ... of the world, it boldly introduces the concepts and runs with them as if you, yourself are born of this world and privy to the nuances of it's reality. Over time you start to better understand the mechanics of it all, and I have to say, I've fallen in love with them. It feels deeply imaginative and like having a wonderful dream you simply do not wish to wake up from. Were that not enough, it has a ever present sense of mystery that pulls you along - with questions and background happenings that slowly unfold before you, never thrown in your face and instead ebbing along in the back of your mind, building intrigue. I dare say this may be my favorite show of the season.

A simple yet unique and interesting fantasy story is overtaken by a world that tries too hard to be unique without knowing how to present its elements effectively

This show is not bad by any means, its certainly better than most isekai out there. But contrary to those shows the problem is not that this show is generic in its world, but that it tries to add a lot of unique elements all at once without sufficient explanation or time for the audience to breathe and understand them, and without exploring them enough. There are so many elements added to this world every single episode and ... the way these elements are delivered does not make me curious about whats next but it leaves me scratching my head.

This was bad enough that I just didn't care about any of the characters or plot points anymore, and the production values are very mid, save for a great score by Kevin Penkin

The art style is OK; neither exciting nor ugly. The audio (voice acting, music) is OK, I guess? And while the premise of the main character being a human in a world full of non-humans isn't exactly new, it isn't bad either.

What makes me review this series as bad is none of those things. It's that it's pretentious. It tries too hard to be unique, with a world-building that looks like mashing random elements together, and yet it doesn't give you, the viewer, the exposure necessary to connect those elements into a coherent whole.

As a result, you're left completely clueless and asking yourself ... "what exactly am I watching?". And that feeling remains after one, two, five episodes.
