Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi

Salaryman Tsuyoshi Mukouda is accidentally summoned as a hero to the Kingdom of Reijseger in another world to help defend against their enemies. Wary of the royal family's true intentions, Mukouda is able to talk his way out of the situation due to his non-combat skill, "Online Supermarket," which is deemed useless.

However, this power proves to be anything but useless. With this ability, Mukouda is able to cheaply purchase food products and utensils from Japan—most of which are considered luxuries in this world. As Mukouda cooks up a storm using his ability, he catches the eye of the fearsome mythical wolf Fel. The legendary beast swiftly negotiates a contract to become Mukouda's familiar, unable to resist the delicious dishes. With Fel by his side, Mukouda travels the world, earning his keep as an adventurer and merchant all the while enjoying delectable meals.

a GREAT anime to watch if you want the following: laidback/low conflict plot, yummies, ADORABLE familiars, journey/adventure plots, little-to-no fanservice, a non-overpowered MC, or simply just a break! this anime was soooo relaxing to watch and i couldn't recommend it enough ദ്ദി(ᵔᗜᵔ)

the main issue i see people have with this anime is its 'lack of plot'/character development, but i think the laidback, low tension feel of this show is what made it so enjoyable for me! i watched this as a break from watching a longer anime and it served me very well! further, i'd like to commend the kindness of all the encounted characters ... to the MC. all the characters are likeable and nothing about this show rubbed me the wrong way i.e. pervy characters, half-naked girls, corrupt officials being a main plot point (very rare for isekais). it made all the stops at various cities way more peaceful to watch :)

i saw someone else say something along these lines...
"the two things that separate this anime from other isekais are:
1. the MC not being a prominent part of the world's 'main' story but rather making his own entertaining side story
2. no girls existing for the sole purpose of fanservice following the MC"

honestly, i agree! these two things have come to annoy me quite a bit in other animes due to it making many isekais feel like regurgitations of one another, but these differences made 'Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi' all the more refreshing! it just proves that you don't need a crazy op MC for an anime to be good. (⑅˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈ ) the first episode is very shield hero-esque in the way that the MC is mocked for his abilities but this time he's smart enough to take the hush money, flee the corrupt(ing) kingdom, discover the perks of his abilities and say "ok so i want NOTHING to do with those officials anymore...i just wanna travel and eat my food damn..." AND THANK GOD BECAUSE WE GET FEL AND SUI (ᗒᗨᗕ) tbh everytime fel was on screen i wanted to pet him so bad (༎‿༎) he's so fluffy and pretty and cute i wanna feed him all the food he wants and braid his hair and lie on his back ಠ_ಠ
sidenote: ik this peacefulness will probably change in the following seasons as he is a hero after all, but for now, i am content with this harmonious arc ٩(^ᗜ^ )و

lol lowkey my bad i told myself i should review this as the gourmet anime it is but i got too excited with the other stuff. anyway, i don't actually watch gourmet animes because i never thought they'd be that good, but this has me by my NECK its so good. the food looks so good it legit made me cook my own teriyaki spam bowl like... HOWEVER DO NOT WATCH THIS WHILE U EAT MAN I FELT LIKE I WAS EATING THE ORCS...NOT GOOD.....the food looked delicious but i could unfortunately not get over the psychological hurdle of it being monster meat............

anyway here are my ratings heheheheh
animation: 8/10
plot: 6/10 (in a good way tho lowkey)
characters: 9.5/10
enjoyability: 10/10
overall: 9/10! <3

Mixed Feelings

This is what I call a "cozy anime", and while I very much enjoyed it, I can see why a lot of other people wouldn't.

It's an anime about a man cooking food for his big doggo and <i>sometimes</i> doing classic Fantasy RPG stuff, like doing quests and exploring dungeons (mostly bc the doggo forces him to tbh).

That's all there is to it. It doesn't have much of a plot - actually, I think there is not even an overarching plot - nothing dramatic ever happens, no one is seriously hurt or dies. It's a family-friendly experience all throughout.

Despite of its incredibly low stakes - ... or maybe because of it, if you're here for the doggo and the food and not the story, it's still worth watching.

The characters are overall likable and relatable, it has its fair share of humor, and you can tell some extra effort was put into the way the food is drawn and presented.
The art is always bright and colorful - it really is the kind of anime you can watch simply to relax. Or to take some cooking ideas away from.

Simply put, Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi a waste of time. Being a series made by Mappa, also being an isekai, I figured this was an easy watch. It was not that, it was just a cooking show with a wolf, cool. 12 episodes with 0 plot, basically the only fan service was bright colorful food, which is the best part of the show, seeing the food. It's very rare to come across an anime that refuses to have basic storytelling, but Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi pulls that off. This is the lowest effort a studio can ... give. A thoroughly disappointing series from such a reputable studio. If this is what Mappa is wasting time on, my advice to them would be this, less is more. Don't release garbage.

Animation 7/10
- The food is drawn well, the beasts are also done well, but the backgrounds can be muddy looking when they are outside.
Sound 6/10
- OP/ED are meh, SE are not great, and voice acting is just okay, nothing sound wise stands out.
Story 1/10
- This is rare for me to rate something under a 5 in any category for my scoring, but seriously, I can't in good conscience give this anything but a 1 story wise, because there is no story, this is slice of life cooking channel, and that's it.
Characters 4/10
- Another aspect of this series that just isn't remotely good. Main character has zero growth, doesn't use his abilities to their full potential, even after realizing the potential. Sui is cute, Fel is just an OP wolf, the goddesses are rarely seen or heard from.
Enjoyment 5/10
- This series had potential when it started, but then halfway into it, I was just watching it for completion. Like a lot of series in winter 2023, they had potential, and then became a fart in the wind.

I can't recommend this to anyone. If you like drawn food, go play Final Fantasy 15. Then again Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi is on par with FF15 in its trashiness, so maybe that's not a good idea. Either way, stay away from this waste of time, there are so much anime out there.
