Seija Musou: Salaryman, Isekai de Ikinokoru Tame ni Ayumu Michi

Right as he is about to earn a promotion, a salaryman meets an untimely demise. Taking pity, a mysterious being grants him a second life in the land of Galdardia as a teenager. Choosing the name Luciel for himself and a role as a healer, the young man sets off for the nearby town of Merratoni. There, he learns that healers are a coveted resource, yet they often take advantage of others for monetary gain. Vowing to be different from other healers, he joins the local branch of the Healers' Guild and begins unlocking his magical potential.

After failing to save someone with his magic, Luciel is determined to get stronger. To improve his physical strength and hone his magic skills, he registers as an adventurer and takes rigorous training under Brod, the chief instructor of the Adventurers' Guild. Soon, Luciel gradually finds his way through Galdardia, gaining a reputation as a selfless healer who aids others regardless of expense.

A show about a paranoid virgin wageslave who dies and gets transported into another world with a strong desire not to die. Whereas many shows have protagonists vs antagonists, this is more of him vs himself in many ways. It's very small scale, at first, and laid back while you see the MC struggle and grow a little bit. The animation is nothing special but the manga isn't exactly a masterpiece either. It embraces a kind of charming minimalism that struck the right chord with me. It's definitely a refreshing flavor of isekai trash that exists for indulging in your guilty pleasure. The world-building and ... hyper focus on the MC makes it far more enjoyable than other genre slop. The biggest complaints seem to be that it's too slow or lacks some kind of tangible antagonistic element, but I think that works to its benefit. I would be surprised if someone wasn't charmed by the 12th episode.

Mixed Feelings

*Definitely* not for everyone.

It starts off all weird and janky, but if you're patient enough and stick with it, it's a bit rewarding. The latter half of the season makes you want a second season. What hooked me was because the anime tackled the idea of regulation and ethics in the field of healing. Not much animes on that front. The only other anime I can think of that deals with that issue is Isekai Yakkyoku, though there's probably more than just that.

Art: 6/10
It was janky in the first half but it looks like they pulled themselves together because it kinda got better in the ... latter half, plus they started to use some 3D somewhere near the end.

Story: 6/10
First half was really weird and iffy, writing-wise. It just wasn't clicking at all with me, but I am really glad I didn't drop it after the first episode. The latter half made more and more sense as the episodes went by and the jokes finally landed, at least for me.

I still think it's not for everyone but overall, I'd love for this anime to have a season 2.

The Great Cleric follows a formerly modern day Japanese salaryman, who is shot by a stray bullet and dies after an important business proposal. He reincarnates into a medieval fantasy world and take on the name Luciel who chooses the path of healing but with a twist. Will he be able to save many lives with his power or will he succumb to fate a second time?

Story & Character: 5/10
The story is much different from your typical isekai; In the Great Cleric, Luciel doesn't start off with any ungodly powers or cheat skill and instead has to train diligently for his powers to gradually increase. ... As a result, the story is more related to his experience while training to become a better healer and fend off attackers without the need for external assistance. However, despite being a very unique plot point it also becomes its major restriction: This series essentially became a training simulator where Luciel focuses solely on grinding out the substance X potions and fighting instructor Brod majority of the time; It's only until much later where we see more meaningful story development after a change of environment. As a result of the very focused training grind, The Great Cleric lacks heavily in character development so much so that I barely remember the characters names apart from the two mostly involved with Luciel: Gulgar and Brod. It feels like the other characters were used to fill in the empty spots on the character list and nothing more considering they were in and out of the series like a seasonal sports starting line-up. I wished they could have gotten into the characters more especially their backgrounds, past experience etc. since that would have had a more meaningful impact on Luciel's growth than healing no-name adventurers every episode.

Art & Sound: 5/10
The art and animation were decent by today's standard, nothing too extraordinary. I really enjoyed the shots with absurd facial expressions and the lucky face guy. The awkward expressions livened up the scenes at every turn so it was a welcome addition for its comical effect. Sound was also decent by modern standards. I didn't notice anything that stood out as a negative in terms of voice acting, sound effects or background music.

Overall & Enjoyment: 5/10
There was a lot of playful scenes in this series that made it a lot more enjoyable than I expected. The story didn't really get anywhere until the end where Luciel was summoned out of the guild and funnily enough that's where he experienced the most growth contrary to the training he received in the guild training hall. Beyond that, the female characters felt very underdeveloped, they all felt the same to me and didn't have anything interesting to contribute to the series apart from cheap fanservice or background noise. Overall, it was a decent watch but I probably wouldn't stay around for a season 2.
