Versailles no Bara (Movie)

Hoping to unite their countries with an alliance, The Empress of Austria arranges her daughter, the delightful yet spoiled Marie Antoinette, to marry the crown prince of France, Louis XVI. Upon arriving in Versailles, the Austrian princess meets Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, Captain of the Royal Guards—a seemingly dashing young man—but to Antoinette's astonishment, he is in fact a woman!

The youngest daughter of a noble family with a prominent lack of a male heir, Oscar was raised as a boy to continue the family's military legacy. Suffocated by the rigid rules associated with her new position and longing for companionship, Antoinette immediately takes a liking to this intriguing young woman, and wastes no time befriending her. However, as the childish new queen foolishly abuses her power, Oscar is conflicted between maintaining her loyalty to the royal family and addressing the growing concern of poverty among the common people.

Recalling the events of the French Revolution, Versailles no Bara depicts the struggles of two women unjustly burdened by family expectations. Yet, despite being forced to deny their identities at the expense of personal happiness, they march on to become key players in the annals of history.

As someone who never read the original or watched the anime due to time constraints, this film did a great job at highlighting what a fantastic c**t Oscar is.
The musical sequences felt like where a lot of the story got compacted. That said, it was still clear how Antoinette was treated by the other nobility, for example.
I'm sure I missed lots of nuance and interpersonal drama but for what it is, I had a great time. If you're short on time but want to understand why Oscar in particular has become such a touch-stone character in media aimed at young women, you ... could do much worse than this adaptation.

Mixed Feelings

The manga awesome
The anime awesome

The movie was a let down. I get it fit in all the info and scenes in about 2 hours is insane to ask but why skip so much. The art was beautiful but because they made it a movie so many things were lost and taken out. Let's say you're a new viewer interested in watching it since it's a cult classic thinking it will suffice since people might like old animation (its not everyone's cup of tea i like it but i digress) This movie, it's with beautiful animation but then you don't actually get the full story and ... plot holes everywhere. People will think that The Rose of Versailles is bad and people over hype it....

The Rose of Versailles has been one of the best anime/manga that may have existed and with the release of this movie by Netflix many were anxious but as soon as I finished watching it I was somewhat dissatisfied with the direction it had due to several problems that I will mention below (this review is spoiler-free in case you haven't seen anything about The Rose of Versailles yet, don't worry)

First of all, if someone who hasn't seen the original anime or read the manga were to see this movie, they probably wouldn't understand much or think that the characters were very flat due to ... the cutting of scenes and important moments in the story but also eliminating characters or reducing their roles on screen just to summarize everything in less than 2 hours which resulted in the characters or even the protagonist Lady Oscar not even feeling real or complex, and it also took away drama and tense atmosphere from the story. Also, I didn't feel good about the choice of music, I don't mind that they turned it into a musical because this manga has the potential to be adapted as a stage play even as they have already done, but the J-pop songs felt very out of place knowing that it is set in 18th century France so in my personal opinion, I would have liked to see inclusion or participation of visual kei artists like Kamijo and his band Versailles (which is actually named after Riyoko Ikeda's work and has also covered the original opening) basically they had every opportunity to put music that would have suited the atmosphere better but they blew it.
Finally, the artistic and visual side looks good, although it does not surpass the visuals of the manga and the original anime of the 70s, but overall it is well achieved, unlike the rest of the elements of the film. I repeat for the last time, the main problem is that they wanted to summarize the entire work leaving gaps and inconsistencies that feel confusing or problematic for the development of the story and characters even for someone who is familiar and knows the original plot. Definitely from my experience I don't recommend it even if you are a fan of The Rose of Versailles, some moments may seem a little emotional but they do not have the same essence as in the other adaptations or the manga due to this poor direction. Even so, I hope one day we have some decent work of The Rose of Versailles that satisfies us all and brings more people to know this incredible work made by Riyoko Ikeda.
