Synopsis

On the planet Noman's Land, reporters Meryl Stryfe and Roberto De Niro traverse the desert in search of the infamous outlaw Vash the Stampede. But the man they find near the desolate town of Jeneora Rock is a far cry from the lethal terrorist they expect. In reality, Vash is a passive and carefree drifter; he is a proponent of peace, beloved by the residents of the town. His inaccurate reputation actually stems from the widespread atrocities committed by his twin brother Knives Millions. Still, Vash is dubbed "The Humanoid Typhoon'' due to the tendency for violent chaos to follow in his wake.

Chaos soon arrives in the form of bounty hunters seeking the high price on Vash's head, and their violent pursuit poses great danger to the town and its precious power plant. Thanks to his gunslinging prowess, Vash is able to resist most of these nefarious forces. Yet he must soon face off against the ultimate evil: the unstoppable destructive power of his malevolent brother.

I loved the clash of idealism between Vash and Nai in their final fight. Nai is trying to explain to Vash why humans are worthless and should be killed, while Vash understands the mistakes humans make and wants to befriend them.

I am a sucker for unique animation styles, and Stampede might be one of the most unique and creative ways of animating a show I have ever seen. The constant use of one-camera shots, the sound effects, the crazy angles, etc.

Mixed Feelings

what made the later half of the original trigun so shocking and really made you feel for vash was how before every episode had such a happy and optimistic ending. you really do become deluded with the same idea that vash has that no one has to die and when that's ripped away it hits both you and vash like a train. the good guys in stampede almost never win. it becomes expected that something bad is gonna happen and when it does, i feel nothing.

Take Trigun, but remove the "juice", the "rizz", the "it factor", and then you get Trigun Stampede.

The original Trigun is something I remember in a hazy fugue state of late nights in a buddies basement in my late teens. Maybe we all had just played too much Halo,everything smelled like stale weed and sweat, and we just wanted to kick back with a DVD copy of a grungy looking anime from the 90's that had sick guitar riffs.

Basically I remember generally liking Trigun, but not being particularly attached to it.

So when the remake was announced, I said to myself "neat, I could revisit ... Trigun". My gf agreed, because she also sorta remembered Trigun from when she was a teenager.

And so we sat down to watch the first episode, watched the whole thing in Japanese, and as soon as the credits rolled, went online to see if Johnny Young Bosch and the rest of the English cast was coming back for a dub. As soon as that was partially confirmed we decided to wait for the dub to satiate our nostalgia driven Lizard brains.

-8 months later-

I'm hungover, it's Saturday morning, I don't want to move. So watch all twelve episodes of Trigun Stampede and am left with the question of who was this for? People who like the original will be put off by the anime soft boy redesign of Vash and the new CGI aesthetic (or they've moved on in the last twenty years). And people younger then thirty think of the original as "boomer" anime,and don't have any built in interest in the thing being rebooted.
So where is the market for this new version?

Story: Stampede is the cliff notes version of Trigun's story, and doesn't really allow for much in the way of world building, it just hurries along to million knives without much of a thought as to why we should care.

Characters: Vash became a standard sad anime boy protagonist, which is too bad, because his dichotomy with million knives becomes really dull when they're both just a collection of standard anime tropes.
Nic and Meryl are mostly the same, but don't have much time in the story to allow them to be interesting.
I despise Roberto De Niro. He is the worst part of the show. He is such a bland replacement for Millie, the washed up jaded reporter character is so played out that I could guess most of his lines before he said them.

Tone/Atmosphere/World building/etc: I like Dune, I like Dune a lot.Not everything needs to be Dune. I get that space westerns got played out after Trigun went off the air, but changing it to Dune just hollows out the charm of the original and just leaves it as another chosen one heroic journey. It's just so bland.

The CGI:......... Honestly looked pretty good, I generally still prefer the look of the original, but that's mostly nostalgia probably. The CGI gets a little dicey during the final fight, but other than that, it looks fine to good most of the time.

So to wrap this all up, if you want to experience Trigun, probably just watch the original. Yeah its a bit longer, but it a least has an identity of its own and its a solid 7/10.
