I want to try and offset a lot of the negative reviews and that seem to misunderstand RWBY and miss the mark. If you look at it in a vaccuum and judge it by Triple-A anime studio standards, then yes it falls short of being great. But its not bad. You also have to understand it in context. It started out as a clunky experimental anime from a very small studio and long story short, it's was mish-mash of things, animation styles, voice acting, music, writing, comedy, even switching studios, etc. So it's come a very long way and to OG fans its very endearing

So here’s what I think happened with this anime: they wanted to rebrand the original cg series as anime and make big bucks on Netflix. They wisely entrusted legendary Studio Shaft with this task since it has a name for quality animation and storytelling. Thing is, it didn’t work out.
It’s obvious that there were many problems down the production line (time? money?) and it’s sad to see how hard the studio that brought to life masterpieces such as Monogatari and MadoMagi is struggling with this new project. It started nicely with some decent fight sequences and lovely character design, but the last few episodes the animation ... Sep 2, 2022
Ice Queendom is an awful representation of Rooster Teeth and Monty Om's RWBY. If it wasn't for a manga spinoff it wouldn't exist in the first place.
When RWBY was initially being worked on, (by Rooster Teeth and Monty Om) there was a serious disconnect between the two. Monty was slated to animate the fight scenes but was never told the context behind the scenes themselves, giving Rooster Teeth full rule over plot, ultimately leading to an entire lack of story. The series relied heavily on Monty's involvement, so much so that when he died from a allergic reaction the series plummeted in quality and ... Sep 8, 2022
It was interesting and heartening to see a version of a work I love so much in the hands of more resourceful professional animators, however it is painful to note that the character development of the original version was completely watered down and boiled down to fit these 12 episodes. RWBY: Ice Queendom feels incredibly less impactful than its original version.
In Ice Queendom, there is no space. It's all too fast and the attempts to humanize the characters by giving them moments of fragility lost their charm and purpose with the lack of space to develop them. That said, I believe that watching Ice Queendom ... Sep 18, 2022
RWBY is an American animated series created by Monty Oum of Rooster Teeth. Although there are many ignorant skeptics that are very vocal about how watching things in English is weird(?) or that the CG animation is bad(?), RWBY is an excellent show with one of the best narratives I've ever had the pleasure of diving into. This anime here, Ice Queendom, IS NOT an adaptation of RWBY, IS NOT representative of RWBY as a whole, and SHOULD NOT be used as a substitute for watching RWBY. I will definitively say here and now that Ice Queendom is an inferior spinoff that should be treated

RWBY: Ice Queendom is bad. However, was the original RWBY good to begin with? Also no.
If we’re talking pure production value, I don’t think that there’s any chance in hell that RoosterTeeth’s production is better. The CGI is just terrible to look at. Sure, while Ice Queendom uses some CGI to an extent, most of it is animated fairly well, with fight scenes to boot. Side by side comparisons of fight scenes, even with the advantage of CGI being way easier to animate, Shaft still has RoosterTeeth beat. I don’t think that this is a strong performance by Shaft, but it also is not it’s ... Mar 5, 2023
Haven't watched the orignial RWBY but I've always liked the aesthetic and music, I also like Shaft and I think they captured it nicely here. A few parts of the animation are really wonky and the scheduling troubles Shaft had while airing this show but when it's good, it's good! I really liked all the creative ideas they showed in Weiss' nightmare and how they used it to expand on the world building.
This story isn't just about the girls goofing around on a new adventure in some zany winter wonderland though, it's also a setting for the girls to come to terms with who ... Sep 21, 2022
The animation was really great, although the story was abit draggy. The animation was really well done. The story is quite interesting as they explore something different from the rwby main story line. The focus of the character is on Weiss and her family, and their relationship with the Faunas. There was a lot time and effort invested into the animation especially the fight scenes were really good, the animation really did carry the show for me. Looking through the reviews, people were upset with the storyline as they only focus on Weiss story and there wasn't much of world building, everything was really narrowed

RWBY anime turned out to be somewhat disappointing.
Last ditch to save the dying franchise failed on me. Sloppy pacing, with ok character development. Strange, certainly confusing for newcomers plot, with good animation. This anime was all over the place. As someone who watched the original, but was never a fan of it I wasn't impressed with the overall quality of this anime. Definitely do not recommend it as an entrance to RWBY franchise. The show basically assumes you're ready to eat up a ton of lore cause it cramped two hours worth of content into first three episodes; after that it started an original arc which ... Oct 4, 2022
Here is my review of this anime in 2022!
Story (9) The story is about 4 girls who become a team called RWBY by using their first names. There is a lot of action and fighting in this anime. It's similar to the previous RWBY but has a different art style and animation. Art (9) The art in this anime is incredibly good compared to other RWBY. It's more to 2D Animation rather than 2.5D that almost wrecked the animation itself in my opinion. I really love how they make RWBY from 2.5/3D Animation to 2D Animation. The shadow, glow, fighting scene art, etc are very good. But ... Nov 28, 2023
As the others say, Ep 1 - 3 is a recap of volumes 1 and 2. I recommend watching the original instead of this anime.
The animation has really no effort, the quality is just... not good The only new content in these, they introduced to us a new Grimm called Nightmares and there's a new character named Shion... what? I forget her name. The Sfx was... low quality, and also what's wrong with eps 10 dude, why does the magic circle just appear like that? And... Ruby didn't eat the cookies! Why?! ... Nov 28, 2022
I could not understand how can so good looking anime score only 6 points, but now after watching it, it became completely clear to me.
You could make story that makes less sense with worse development and less likeable characters that never make any sense only if you hired ex-twitter workers and asked them to write their biography. To invest 11 from 12 episodes in to the worst character this series has (girl of cold powers that never makes anything likeable but people unreasonably risk life for her and everyone says nice things about her for no reason) For example she will say" You ... 3/10 solely for how "decently" the first three episodes are adapted. It'd be a 1 otherwise.
RWBY is a series that conceptually has a really interesting world and characters, but unfortunately the "writers" have no idea what to do with any of it. Even more unfortunate is the fact that these same writers are the ones who wrote this story and handed it off to a high end studio hoping they could make a miracle out of garbage. While the first three episodes to have a pacing problem and mostly require that you've watched the first couple Volumes of the original series to fully grasp what's happening, ... Sep 19, 2022
TLDR: Don't waste your time on this anime. The animation is terrible and the story is boring.
I came into this anime expecting stellar fight scenes as Shaft attempts to recreate the awesomeness of the original RWBY. Story I didn't really care that much about, but it had to be at least somewhat serviceable and not be boring. What I got was the complete opposite of what I wanted. There was one really good fight scene for each of the first three episodes, and everything else looks like utter dogshit. Walk cycles were fucked, fights became slideshows, sometimes the animation quality drops so hard it's comical. ... Sep 18, 2022
RWBY? Now, that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time. A long time.
I haven’t seen RWBY since season six in late 2018, and nothing, in particular, has turned me off the series. My interest just kind of petered out after I began to make, and listen to criticisms of the show. But, when I saw a new anime called “RWBY: Ice Queendom” the long cold fire that was my interest in RWBY began to smolder anew. However, the smoldering waned a bit after I watched the first few episodes, and by the last episode, the fire was as cold as it always ... Nov 13, 2022
RWBY is one of the worst show of all time being in the same tier as Korra and MLB
The 3 first Season are ok but then it get the zombified simpsons and lose so much quality it become funny bcz the show take itself seriously when it's shit, it make me laugh to thinks japanese man in tuxedo working at a company decided to make a spin-off of that what i love even more it's that it's Shaft the troll studio who's only good anime is Monogatari Ça me met vraiment bien que le studio Shaft ponde une énième chiasse en sortant autre chose qu'un ... Man, I was really rooting for RWBY: Ice Queendom to do well because I'm quite a fan of the expansive world that the original online show produced, but for viewers new to the whole RWBY world, this series really doesn't reflect how deep and fast past the original is. We're probably not suppose to compare non-anime to anime, but let's call it what it is - RWBY: Ice Queendom is a pretty big disappointment. I'll try and keep my comparisons to a minimum for any new viewers.
Story: RWBY: Ice Queendom takes place in the world of Remnent, where prospective huntsmen and huntresses go ... Oct 16, 2022
The rwby anime was something that i was looking forward to, but like everything in this franchise, it starts good and is really bad by the end of it with some good scenes there and there, i guess you can call it a BAD LUCK CHARM. Jokes aside for someone who hasn't watched the original this anime would be confusing showing important characters out of the blue but they can still find it entertaining. The only good thing the show did was explain character motives and the problems each of them have. I think that for already experienced fans the most disappointing thing was the

Yas Queendom.
RWBY is a strange franchise. I’ve enjoyed some of the manga, but it’s adaptations needed some work after those god awful 3D anime by Rooster Teeth. Luckily this adaptation is not in 3d and is animated by studio Shaft so you can guarantee that this time around the quality of “RWBY: Ice Queendom” is going to be totally… just okay. The biggest problem with this anime is it’s pacing. I really enjoyed the first half of the season. I’m not sure if this a franchise reboot, but the re-introduction to Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang and the world of huntsmen and Grimms is not ... Sep 25, 2022
TLDR.: If you haven't seen the original, watch that instead. If you have seen the original and you're curious about this, don't bother. If you're REALLY curious, there'll probably be a few compilations on youtube you can watch about this, I'd recommend that over actually watching the show.
The new content dragged, wasn't that great and adds almost nothing to the original show. And the content that WAS also in the original felt... flat? Like, the original was VERY rough around the edges, don't get me wrong; but it had a charm to it. With this, it feels like they are trying to recreate the same charm, ... |
