Shen Yin Wangzuo

Six thousand years ago, mankind's glorious reign ended as a result of an invasion of the demon race, brought about by the emergence of 72 demon gods. To safeguard the remnants of humanity, the Alliance of Temples appeared to stop the demons' progress and temporarily stabilize the situation.

At present, nine-year-old Long Hao Chen is training to become a part of the Knight Temple Hall. Through sheer dedication and the support of his companions, he passes the knight exam. Now, under the tutelage of his teacher Long Xing Yu, Long Hao Chen endures the Holy Resurrection Ritual to ascertain his capability. The ritual reveals that Long Hao Chen is a Son of Light—an individual who possesses a vast amount of spiritual energy.

Recognizing his disciple's promising potential, Long Xing Yu urges Long Hao Chen to become a strong knight capable of defeating the Demon Lord alongside him. With countless challenges awaiting him, Long Hao Chen may be the warrior that can end the era of darkness.

This show is amazing! Great fight scenes, interesting characters, and stunning art. Highly recommend if you like progression fantasy with magic and action. There are a lot of similarities to Soul Land too, so if you are looking for a show like Soul Land, Throne of Seal is a great choice.

Plot overview (no spoilers): A boy, Haochen, becomes a magic knight to protect his loved ones from demons. There is a hard magic system with defined levels, and the higher the level, the stronger the knight. Haochen trains to become stronger to end the millennia-long fight against the demons.

Characters: Haochen is a really likeable MC. ... He is very nice to his friends and family, and hardworking. Sometimes he has trouble controlling his emotions, though, and he can lose control. The female lead, Cai'er, is one of my favorite women. She has a tragic story that you need to watch! Other characters are also good, like Li Xin and Ye Hua.

Art: 3D style, very similar to Soul Land. The fight scenes flow very nicely and use vivid colors, making for peak entertainment.

Music: The opening is pretty good, and so is the rest of the soundtrack.

Reasonably good, but probably created for a younger audience.

Consistent visuals & a reasonably good artstyle. Very high contrast color scheme. Bright red / pink hairstyles. Pink/rainbow color horses. Everything pops out a lot. Environments are often very flat & lack details in textures & debris, furniture, trees etc.

Story revolves around a humans vs demons premise, where the war has been at a deadlock for 6000 years. It's overall well told, abilities, strength, character thoughts are all expressed well. And the show pacing is very good.

However I personally find that often the show feels too contradictory between characters & world lore:
There are several virtues ... that the knights are trying to uphold. "Compassion, honesty, bravery, fairness...", yet the people who receive screen time are always bickering and fighting like toddlers, adults included. There are moments where some bystanders even mentioned a knight freezing people around her during a fight. Another time some temple officials overlooked a murder attempt. They seemingly can also fight in the middle of busy towns for some reason. One of the central adult characters for this season was even willing to beat up a child in a fit of rage because the child gave him praise.

The characters are all mentally unstable & it's never explained that the knights would be corrupt or anything. I can only assume it's a narrative conflict.

For the most part I enjoy fights & I actually could tell how most skills used between different disciplines were consistent with their class. It didn't feel like everyone had developed completely unique skills, it was consistent with lore. None of the fights thus far were that over the top, usually they were very simple trading of blows. You attack. I block.

Putting aside the conflict between how you'd expect this society to work & how it actually seems to work, I genuinely don't have anything negative to say. It's a pretty good show.

Mixed Feelings

I just finished watching this. It was my second attempt.
The first time I felt it was way too childish and stereotyped.
I still feel the same, but I pushed myself to watch more, despite having felt tempted to drop several times, and the story reached a point with tournaments and stuff that I find enjoyable.
I will watch the second season and let's see how it goes.

What I liked:
- good animation, definitely above average for those times.
- western fantasy donghua are a rarity. It's not that I dislike the cultivation genre, but I love western fantasy more.
- convincing lore, albeit atm quite limited to a simple "demons ... vs humans".
- the tournament arc is decent. It's nothing on the scale of Kengan or HxH, keep your expectations low. But it was enough for me not to drop the donghua.
- the worldbuilding is acceptable. It's a bit narrow atm, but most donghua (at least the cultivation ones) expand the worldbuilding gradually. We'll see.

What I didn't like:
- quite childish. The writing goes from a kid/pre-teen vibe similar to Soul Land in the first 16 eps, to a teen/YA vibe in the rest of the season, with the typical annoyingly immature social dynamics of that age, which is a huge turn-off for me.
- plagiarism. The most obvious one is an almost 1-to-1 copy of the dragon of "How to train your dragon" (tho after the blood contract it transformed in some repulsively childish "ball with wings", which felt massively cringe to me and I almost dropped the donghua there).
Then there's a father/son pair of blonde villains who have an certain Malfoy (Harry Potter) vibe, although in a cheaply comedic way.
And there's a teacher who has a slight Severus vibe. And things like that.
This tendency to copy stuff from famous stories and use them in a superficial way is VERY Chinese, and it immediately feels cheap to me.
- the typical Chinese sense of humour, cringe, over the top, childish, cheap, and completely out of place. E.g., the pseudo Draco Malfoy rapping insults to his opponent before a battle, with hip-hop music as a soundtrack. It's a breach of the 4th wall, something that I usually enjoy, but in this case it's so immensely out of place that I question the mental health of whoever greenlit it.
- many little fluffy childish things almost to the point of making it feel like a story for girls for the first half of the season. From how the only female knight has red/pink hair and a heart jewel (WHY!?), to the little rabbit with horns and huge eyes, and a Unicorn King with rainbow wings and a magic light horn. This sugary bullshit makes my soul feel diabetic.
- the typical MEGA BORING Chinese stereotypes, e.g. there's a fatty teacher who serves as comedic relief and is literally ALWAYS with a chicken drumstick in his hand, even in situations where it's ridiculously out of place (once again).
- a LOT of VERY BASIC "light vs darkness" bs narrative, so shallow and so very much against how I perceive reality, that I can feel my whole being contracting for the cringeness.

I am going to watch the next season now. There are something like 180 episodes.
Keep an eye on my next review if you want to be sure of how the story evolves before watching this.
