Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu

In the never-ending wait for a real second season of Haruhi, Kadokawa decided to present us with this short web series called the Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya. And to be fair and honest, these series of short mini-episodes was more enjoyable that I would have ever expected. Here is a short and fast review with its ups and downs

Story:
+ Nice and funny situations ensured in every episode
+ Many overused themes in animes but taken to the extreme for extra lols

- Could have been a little longer in length per episode but thats just me wanting more
- Those wanting actual substance should go look somewhere else

Art:
+ ... Rich in color
+ Nice blend of chibi and normal character animations, making some scenes even funnier
+ Chibi forms look very cute

- Obvious ploy to save animation budget (lol)
- The first couple of episode look downright bad

Sound:
+ All the original voice cast is present
+ Some nice selection of background music

- Haruhi sounds like Konata 80% of the time (although its obvious because of the chibi)

Character:
+ All the characters that made the original series a hit return with their quirks turned up to MAXIMUM
+ A lot of forgotten side characters are given many great moments to shine

- Haruhi is WAAAAY more docile and calm than her original version (good for those who didn't like that about her original version)

Enjoyment: For a small series that runs for approx 5 minutes per episode. I have greatly enjoyed watching this. It really was a great way to kill time when I had nothing else to watch.

Overall: If you were a fan of the original series then I would highly recommend you check this out. They are short in length so its something simple to watch and they are a perfect watch when you want to just flat out kill some time and have a nice and light anime break. In the wait for a real second season, this will surely be a great way to kill some of the anxiety.

Story (5/10): Unfortunately, this ONA suffers in not having a plot. While I do understand that this is more of those "one event per one episode" kind of anime, there are some glimpses of storyline riddled throughout, and I do believe that an anime should either have a good, well developed storyline, or none at all. The producers should be more consistent with what they input into this work, and not try to add anything out of the blue.
Art (9/10): The art is fantastic and clean, making the entire viewing experience that much more enjoyable. The characters all ... look adorable as chibi, and the art work is surprisingly pretty much consistent with its original.
Sound (3/10): Not much to say for the music as there really isn't any, excluding the beginning where Haruhi's face smashes into the screen (lol) or during any action sequence. I feel however, that the lack of music, although not nesassary, was a poor choice, as the music (and the dance) of the original has become iconic and known throughout the anime viewing world. The producers could have easily pulled off the same stunt, creating a "chibi chibi hare hare yukai" and creating a new chibi version dance for it (oh, I would give anything to see this come true).
Characters (10/10): Lucky, the producers kept true to the original character personalities! Well...mostly. Besides the fact that Kyon is now challenging Haruhi at any chance he gets, that Yuki is now a perverted videogame playing weirdo, that Asahina is now barely a foot tall, that Haruhi is being considerate, and Mikuru is now (for some reason) crying like a baby bird, no real changes (lol)! However, this is a comedy, and these "minor" changes do well to enchance the hilarity of this ONA overall.
Enjoyment (9/10): Highly enjoyment!
Overall (8/10): Good, recommendable!

Well, this ONA has kept me, my pitchfork, and my torch occupied while waiting for season 2 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and hopefully garderned back some once faithful Haruhi fans! And hopefully it will satisfy your craving of Haruhi for a while until the second one is released (which it better be, or else a certain "unnamed" animation studio will find themselves hunted down one by one by a certain doctor, and I don't mean House...he's busy).

Tip: For those of you who are just beginning this anime, please don't consider dropping it until after 5 episodes. The beginning is unfortunately slow, however, it gets much more exciting and funny around episode 3, and it starts growing on you. It's definitely worth the watch! ^^

Hasta La Vista

Okay, the only reason that I'm still a Haruhi fan is for two reasons: 1) the original Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2006 and 2) this ONA. ^^

The original idea of The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya came from a parody comic series that pretty much subtly made fun of the original anime. And, I'm not usually one for these kinds of parodies, but I just couldn't resist~! ^^ Also, I love how evil Yuki is shown to be in the series... *devious grin* Not to mention that random lion that was thrown into the mix as well... ^^;;;;

The art... Well, let's just say that it's very ... rare to see chibis still keep their proper anatomy and such in tact. This, is a good thing. Haruhi-chan Suzumiya has managed to pull this off quite well. But, then again, we are talking about Kyoto Animation. Also, the first couple of episodes were done with 3D generated cell-shaded characters. After the first four or five episodes (give or take), though, they resumed to 2D traditional cell-shaded characters.

The sound was, unbelievably, astounding. Usually, I'd get annoyed with Mikuru's voice, but the situations that the story showed made it so that it was actually quite enjoyable~!

Characters seemed to be put on a more comedic spin. But, you do have to realize that this is a parody series that focuses on some points on the original series and pretty much spends about 2-5 minutes making fun of it. But, because they focused so much on the comedic side of things, there wasn't any real development in character. But, that's a given when you're watching a series of parodizing shorts on one of the Anime Industry's largest franchises.

The enjoyment was DEFINATELY 10/10~! Not only did it have the element of satiric comedy, but it also had some... risque-ness into it as well. (is that even a word??) Such as the "wall between hearts." (Or, something like that.) Also, there was some awesome ass-kicking in a few episodes. ^^

Overall, it's not a story and plot-driven anime. It's not exactly focused on character development, either. No, it's merely a satire that makes fun of the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, and personally, I think that they've done a swell job~!

I give "The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya" a grand total score of 9/10!

So I’m not really sure about this show. I am not going to say if you liked the normal show that you will like this one. I’m not even really sure if we could call this the same as the main TV show as the art style, the humor, and even sometimes the idea of the characters is a bit different. Each episode is about 5 minutes long and consists of even smaller clips that mimic a day in the life style show. It reminds me a lot of Azumanga Daioh with the humor as each little skit seems to be trying to make a ... joke and though most are rather good, some feel like they fall slightly flat. I have a small feeling it’s because of the culture and because of the dub that was done.

I did sort of like the funny story lines that they did with Yuki and a really small Ryoko in where Ryoko was played off as sort of a baby version of herself. They were fun as Yuki would treat her like a pet or kid most of the time and Ryoko would pout about it.. Unfortunately, I wasn't really into some of the story lines with Haruhi. They just didn’t feel like they did the character justice. She was still scatterbrained, but she just seemed to have less of the over powerful girl happening in the god area.

In truth, I really am not sure about what the show was all about. It was pretty much just random.

The artwork is really chibi looking. I mean really chibi looking with large heads, small bodies, and tiny hands that sometimes look like mittens. Sometimes they go back to the normal look but it’s not for very long. Otherwise, the show was bright, cheerful, and a little bit insane much like the first show. The little bits of CG that they did so felt a bit off when placed over the drawn stuff and feel like they were just seeing how it would work. It did fit in with the show in the area of color and cell shading but you can almost always tell in a slight way that it was not like the rest.

The dubbing was done by the same people who did the original show and so it’s done really well. That really is all that I can say about it. It has the right feel for the characters in there personality and yet just enough crazy to make it actually work with the overly cartoon world. The only personality that was a bit confusing was Ryoko since we didn't have that much about her in the original show.

Overall, I don’t really know what to think about this Online show since it was sort of random. No real character story, no real development, just a simple comedy show with slice of life. You won’t understand any of the show if you have never seen the TV version, but you also wouldn't understand if you even watched the TV version. It’s just, it has the characters of the TV version but nothing much in the way of things from the actual show.

This ONA was incredibly witty, I think I laughed every single episode. It was kept very compact and well paced making every four minute story seem much longer than it really was. The art was of course chibi but very smooth. The backgrounds were oddly well done which I didn't expect from just a simple extra to a main series. Voice acting was superb. Music was appropriate for comedy's sake. I loved how it seemed to develop every character's other side, especially Yuki's "pastimes". A must watch whether you've ... seen the main series or not. If you enjoy humour, this is for you!

Throughout all of human history, we have been searching for the an answer. Who created us, why, when, and how? These are the questions that have pushed scientific discovery, religious fanatics, and Nagaru Tanigawa. These questions have pushed him so far as to create an alright anime about our beloved creator, a high school girl. This is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Story
The story, if you’ll call it that, is about our wonderful Nick Caraway character, Kyon, and his trip though high school as he is accompanied by a miss Haruhi Suzumiya (Who we will refer to as HZ). The main meat and potatoes of ... this anime is that HZ makes a club to find and meet otherworldly beings, time travelers, and espers. Little does she know, the 3 other members of her club are an otherworldly being, a time traveler, and an esper. It is also revealed that HZ herself is some kind of god/temporal anomaly/secret to the universe, but she doesn’t know it. It’s up to Kyon to keep it a secret from her, because hes chosen by her or something, and help keep HZ from destroying the world with her explosive attitude. Thats only for the first 6 episodes though. The first 6 are known as the story episodes while the rest are your average slice-of-life episodes, BUT with the whole time traveler, esper, alien thing to make situations. My one complaint for the story is that their isn’t enough of it. This is a great setup that, if handled properly, could have made a great scifi romantic comedy, but we have to play to the slice-of-life-rules. The story almost feels wasted, because it is never fully explored. So many more interesting ideas and story arcs could be created if they continued it, but I digress.

Characters
Colorful cast, aren’t they? Not really. The characters in this anime are ok. The main characters, Kyon and HZ, are fleshed out and well rounded. They can develop and change, as characters should. The sides however, ehhhhhhhhhh, no real development. The other characters, even with the new introduction of their powers or the reveal of their interesting lives, they don’t change their base personalities or change their cardboard cutout stereotypes the quite moe stays the quite moe, the silent one stays the silent one and so on. they never seem to break character boundaries and evolve past their stereotypes other than interesting backstories.
Music & Voices
This anime doesn’t have any standouts when it comes to music. My only gripe is the overly sugary sweet opening. My lord, its like a lollypop dipped in caramel, covered in powdered sugar, then wrapped in a bush of cotton candy, finally being chopped up and baked into a apple pie. I watched this anime dubbed, so I can’t say much for the sub, but the dub is fantastic. Crispin Freeman is a wonderful Kyon, and Wendee Lee makes a great HZ, although, you may have to get use to her when she goes from serious HZ to frantic, spontaneous, and air headed HZ. All and all, the dub is the way i’d go.

Visuals
The anime itself is a standard sort of animations. Sometimes still frames, sometimes overly bubbly animation to increases the wackiness of the situations, but all in all, a standard animation. Nothing special, except the opening. Its the perfect thing to go with the music, but its so overly sweet and bubbly. Its too bubbly.
Comedy/Action/Drama
The comedy is a standerd sort of funny. The show is littered with crazy and ineresting things that our Nick Caraway Kyon must react to and deal with. This makes a very good juxtaposition between the insanity of HZ world, and the straight guy Kyon. Their individual personalities also bring a few good laughs to the mix. However, this show is a SoL, so it has to have sexual comedy. Weird groping, panty shots, embarrassed characters with their loud shrieks, the whole package. This has the standerd sexual jokes & situations package that they flaunt whenever possible. Problem? The sexual situations are pretty much the same joke over and over, and some of Kyon’s reactions are repeats as well, But for a SoL, the comedy is great.

Final Veridic
Story 8/10, Good the first 6, but has wasted potential in the story sense.
Characters 8/10, Great development of main, but sides fall flat.
Music & Voices 9/10, Fantastic Dubbed, Opening is too sugary sweet .
Visuals 6/10, Very standerd, nothing spectacular, except the opening, MY GOD.
Comedy 9/10, Kyon’s reaction to things makes it funny, HZ personalty is over the top, but too many sexual situations for comfort (Basically reusing the same joke).
Overall this anime gets a: 8/10

Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu is a collection of comedic shorts, stuff like character development and plot are not exist.Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu relies on the audience’s previous knowledge of the characters and presents fantasy scenarios that explore the extreme “what ifs” the original show could not possibly cover. The biggest strength of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu is the varying length of each episode. This allows the anime to quickly hit a joke and then stop before it gets old… most of the time. Also, unlike Lucky Star , there is actually a gag in each scene,which means ... no more awkward moments of reflection when a scene seemingly cuts off without a punchline.due to its narrowed focus on comedy, I found it even funnier than the original anime.

I think they kept going back from 2D animation to 3D computer graphics, which was... odd. I would have prefered just the 2D art. But it didn't bother me too much. Each episode was cute and funny, just the kind of thing you can just sit back and relax to. I watched it in just afew hours, so even though there are 25 episode's, they were all around 5 minutes each, the longest being about 8 minutes. The art style in Haruhi-chan was very cute, the character's all looked very interesting, especially Yuki and Asakura. *COUGH* This anime kind of made me want to ship ... YukiXAsakura. :"D Anyways, I cannot say too much about it, but it is worth watching. Thank you for reading!

Alright, seeing as how TMoHS is my absolute favorite anime of all time, this review will be extremely biased and may not be helpful at all. That being said here is my review:
TMoHCS is basically a completely non-cannon and chibi version of TMoHS that is basically a little short-series consisting of about 3-5 minute episodes of hilarity.
TMoHCS was heavily enjoyable for big fans of the series but would probably be mediocre with a couple of big laughs here and there for people who didn't like TMoHS or aren't fans of the series. This is pretty much just for when you're bored and would like to ... watch something slightly different.
I enjoyed this heavily because I love the characters from TMoHS and this is really just a filler while I waited for the third season of TMoHS to come out.

Haruhi-chan does not follow a plot but sticks to the overall premise of Suzumiya Haruhi. This is good news for both fans of the show and even the haters of the show. There is no denying the originality behiind a god walking amongst us and is unaware of her powers.Some did like the way the original show was executed, fine. However if you still find the show has potential then Haruhi chan is your go to. The show has fun with all aspects of the original story but just don't ex[ect, well, a story.

The show is drawn in ... chibi form of all characters. The normal version is used for paradoy of serious moments. The background art is very simple and colorful, that helps add a lighter mood to the show which is very appropriate for the show.

The sound is actually done very by the actors and some tracks from the OST can be very enjoyable. Exagerative moments are made clear from voice acting alone; props to voice actors for they do a splendid job despite the fact that it is a web-based series. Maybe as a possible complaint would be multiple voice changes for Haruhi for when she sounds relaxed and when she is normal Haruhi.

Do expect a few changes in the characters. These changes bring humorto the show and are worth getting past the initial fit of nerd rage. The interactions between characters are definitely the highlight of the show and show how well the characters were written. Some of bigger flaws in the characters could be brought by the relevance in a rivalry that is introduced in the show; for it is niether funny or entirely crucial to be included.

The beautiful part of the is that one does not need to be a fan the original seies to be enjoy this show's crazy antics. The show is defintitely worth the time watching and at an averag of 3-4 minutes an episode what do got to lose.
