Doupo Cangqiong: Nian Fan

At first, I was confused as to whether I should watch it or not, and finally I decided to watch it. I came from season 1 to this season, I thought I wouldn't like it very much, but I loved it. If you have any prejudices in your mind, remove them from your mind, because it is worth watching so many episodes and I can't wait even for the new episodes. The anime is not bad, it is recommended to watch, you should definitely try it.

"Doupo Cangqiong: Nian Fan" follows the aftermath of events in the Yun Lan Sect and is essentially setting up as the conclusion. It begins with the Jia Nan Academy arc, where Xiao Yan seeks his second Heavenly Flame: the Fallen Heart Flame. This arc serves as a buildup to his revenge against Yun Shan and the Yun Lan Sect.

This is where everything starts to fall apart. After the second Yun Lan Sect arc—which inevitably takes place in Doupo Cangqiong: Nian Fan—the show begins to decline, especially if you've read even small parts of the Doupo Cangqiong novel or watched one of those AI-voiced summaries ... on YouTube.

The show basically turns into a Naruto/ Bleach-style anime where nearly every episode revolves around a battle. Old side characters are power-crept into irrelevance. Dou Huang characters are essentially extinct, and even random young adult NPCs end up stronger than Hai Po Dong. The cultivation speed becomes absurdly fast—everyone and their mother levels up multiple times within a year or less. Along with that, the pacing becomes extremely rushed. Some battles are glossed over or heavily shortened. Human-to-human, emotionally important dialogues from earlier seasons are either deleted or trimmed down so much that they lose all meaning.

Emotional scenes are also cut short to make room for more battles. How can you tell? Because emotional soundtracks that were frequently used in the past are practically never played anymore—those types of scenes no longer exist. You're essentially hearing the same four or five battle-themed tracks in every episode.

The only real improvements are in the special effects and animation, which have significantly improved—no denying that.

Also, for those rooting for a particular girl: if her name isn't Xiao Xun'er, she has no chance. The directors and writers have made it very clear in recent episodes (~episode 143 and beyond) who they're backing and who they aren’t.

Maybe the sudden shift is due to an attempt to appeal to a younger audience with a shorter attention span. But I truly cherished the emotional scenes from past seasons—they gave weight to the fights. Back then, even advancing a single star felt meaningful. I’m giving this show a fair 7/10 because early Doupo Cangqiong genuinely meant something to me. I think many longtime fans who followed the story through to Xiao Yan’s fight with Nalan Yanran would agree—it was a great show, and we tuned in every week. Nowadays I am just hoping they won't butcher the ending like they did it to Douluo Dalu.

I need to start this review with a warning and a confession. The warning: do not, under any circumstances, waste your time on Doupo Cangqiong: Nian Fan. The confession: I am writing this with a trash can by my desk, because the mere act of recalling this "special episode" is enough to make me feel physically ill.

Let's be clear: I was a fan of the main Battle Through the Heavens story. The rise of Xiao Yan, while tropey, was a fun, power-fueled ride. Nian Fan was supposed to be a poignant look back at his relationship with Ya Fei. Instead, it's a nauseating cocktail of ... recycled footage, narrative incompetence, and emotional manipulation so cheap it should be sold at a dollar store.

The Puke-Inducing Offense #1: Blatant, Unforgivable Clip Show

Calling this a "special episode" is the biggest lie since a politician's campaign promise. This is not a new story. It is a Frankenstein's monster stitched together from scenes we have already watched, repeatedly, in the main series. We are not given a new perspective; we are given a lazy slideshow. My eyes started to ache from rolling so hard, and my stomach churned at the sheer audacity of the producers to package this as new content. It's the cinematic equivalent of serving yesterday's leftovers and calling it a gourmet meal. My gag reflex was activated by the sheer disrespect for the audience's time and intelligence.

The Puke-Inducing Offense #2: A Romance That Feels Like a Corporate Transaction

The entire point of this special is to explore the "yearning" between Xiao Yan and Ya Fei. And yet, their "epic romance" is presented with all the passion and chemistry of a board meeting. The voiceover, meant to be heartfelt, is so saccharine and melodramatic it feels like being force-fed pure sugar syrup. It's cloying, it's artificial, and yes, it makes you want to puke. There is no genuine warmth, only a checklist of romantic anime clichés delivered with the emotional depth of a puddle. The attempt to fabricate depth through slow-motion shots of Ya Fei looking wistful and Xiao Yan looking... well, the same as he always does, is so transparent it's insulting.

The Puke-Inducing Offense #3: Zero Stakes, Zero Payoff, All Vomit

Because we know exactly how this "story" fits into the timeline, there are absolutely zero stakes. We know they separate. We know they reunite later. This entire side-story is a narrative black hole, sucking any potential for tension or surprise into its void of pointlessness. Watching it feels like being stuck in a time loop where nothing matters and nothing changes. It’s an exercise in futility that leaves you with a hollow, sick feeling, realizing you've gained nothing from the experience but a profound sense of regret.

Final Verdict: I'm Literally Puking

Doupo Cangqiong: Nian Fan is not just bad; it's an active assault on the senses and the intellect. It's a cash-grab so transparent and lazy that it evokes a physical reaction of disgust. The recycled animation, the emotionally barren storytelling, and the insulting premise combined to create a perfect storm of nausea. I didn't just feel like puking; I was literally heaving by the end of it. This isn't a tribute to a beloved couple; it's a desecration of their memory.

Save your stomach and your sanity. Avoid this toxic waste at all costs.
