Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid 2nd Season

The duke, full of love and kindness, treads carefully around every living being, be it a tender flower or his seductive maid, Alice Lendrott. Were it not for the devotion Alice shows him and the fondness that grows ever stronger between them, the duke would have barely paid heed to his mother's demand: to either lift the dreadful curse placed upon him or lose his family inheritance. Although the duke has no greed for riches, he yearns to be rid of his frightful powers—which cause all he touches to die—for the sake of those closest to him.

As the duke, Alice, and their friends enjoy spirited days filled with the ridiculous affairs of the supernatural, the spring deadline looms heavily over them. Nonetheless, the duke refuses to take any shortcuts in this endeavor if it means betraying the trust of his cherished friends.

Season 2 was very much a bridge to Season 3. It was a half time show to the final quarters of a football game or (insert sports analogy here). Not my favorite season of the show, but I’d be lying if I said I was disappointed in S2. I mean besides Shield Hero fans I don’t know any fan who would be disappointed in a favorite show getting a 2nd season.

Had plenty of great moments, high stakes, and needed character development for all involved. Art & animation stayed consistent from S1 ... to S2.

The English Cast was phenomenal again. Ricco Fajardo’s performance as Zain is probably the only way I can tolerate Zain as a character or ever for that matter. Yes Zain has admirable qualities in how he treats, cares, and protects those closest to him but that is easily wash away by his unnecessary perverse behavior/comments towards Alice and Cuff.

Mixed Feelings

The second season of "The Duke of Death and His Maid" started strong like the love between our romantic duo, but the second half met the touch of death incarnate.

The first five episodes of the season shift focus from the relationship of the main duo, while still giving them entertaining scenarios and exclusive moments. This first half of the season worked well; it gave attention to some new developments with other characters, avoided the risk of becoming stale, and it changed the setting to make all character actions more interesting. In addition, the events felt led up to a great crescendo; the first ... half of the season become its own arc with lasting effects, such as one character shifting in personality and becoming more prominent.

My only complaint with the first half is that it was choppy, swapping between scenes and characters in an inorganic way. With the sequel-like nature to some of the "skits," the choppiness made them feel like unwanted filler (and I say this as someone who loves filler so long as it serves some sort of role to character development, world-building, etc.). I would rather something that progresses more slowly but has a continous thread; honestly, I think this boils down to whether you are the type of person who prefers Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2 (I prefer the former).

The second half starts by playing with some of the new dynamics from the first half, and I really like some of the parts of the mid-season episodes. New character developments make for interesting dynamics between side characters. Unfortunately, I remember practically nothing from this second half, despite having just watched it. The second half was a choppy mess, with some developments feeling stagnant.

Then there is a final sort of "arc" for the last two or three episodes. It dragged. And it felt like something from a completely different series; it had action sequences, character appearances that felt unecessary, and a lack of the connection between the main duo. I was bored during the last episodes. What made things worse is that the last few minutes of the final episode started to get interesting, but it constantly left that dreadful feeling of "There is no way that this will wrap up or have a satisfying ending in the alloted time."

The first half of the second series led me to believe that something big would close out the second season, much like how the first season managed to wiggle in a satisfying conclusion. Unfortunately, the second half of the second season feels choppy and undercooked. I considered dropping the series toward the end of this second season, but I am in too deep and want to know the outcome for these characters; the last ten minutes of this season just barely kept me invested. I will pray for a better third season and hope that the second season was only temporarily cursed by a witch.
