Yuri no Tsuioku
A newspaper article about a vandalized painting catches the eye of William James Moriarty. Recognizing the artist from his childhood days in the slums, he takes his brother Louis with him on a trip to the city of Bath to meet with the artist personally and identify the culprit. However, the person claiming to be the painter is not the man William remembers. Joined by Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson, William looks for clues in order to find his old friend.

The Moriarty household faces its biggest crisis to date: hosting a tea party. Mysterious and closed off to the public, the Moriarty home hides an abundance of weapons, research, and other tools used in their underground activities. Were those special episodes necessary in the first place?

No.


But did they give me enough enjoyment by bringing the characters I missed seeing back in action for 40 more minutes?

Absolutely!


... The first one out of two episodes was just a simple extra case that let us see William and Sherlock once again working more or less together which we weren't able to see much of in the two seasons for quite an obvious reason.

The story itself was okay, nothing special, nothing that would shock us. I would say it was mostly created to give us extra interactions between Sherly and Moriarty which is absolutely fine by me. But once again there is nothing more than this so don't expect much.

The second episode was just straightforward fanservice. It was quite entertaining, I cannot lie, I even giggled a few times. It was reassuring that they managed to not drift into the cringe territory as it was something I was worried about. We got to hear some cliche lines straight out of some dating simulators but also we saw a protective side of the older two Moriarty brothers which I found very adorable!

Overall I found both episodes entertaining enough to give them the overall score of 7/10. The quality of art and sound isn't any different than in the two seasons and I was just happy to once again see the characters I grew to like a lot animated!

Yes, these are worth watching, stand-alone episodes that are just as entertaining as the rest of the series.

But WHEN should you watch them?

There are 2 episodes in this OVA. The first episode fits in the best between season 1 and 2 IMO, but it can be watched practically anywhere after Sherlock and Watson get introduced. The 2nd episode fits in the best between episodes 6 and 7 in season 2, so if you want to watch them both at the same time then I'd reccomend watching them both between episodes 6 and 7 in season 2.

Of all the stand-alone episodes in this whole anime ... I honestly think these were 2 of the best ones.

Mixed Feelings

All in all if you liked the anime, this is more of the same in many ways, so you'll probably like it. If you're looking for improved story, the first OVA is all right, and Sherlock is in it. The second is fluff and Moriarty-centric.

The art was about on par with the main series, with the usual very pretty backgrounds and variably okay-looking main characters (which is funny when episode 2 has a tropey bishounen/ikemen moment meant to wow us with how "gorgeous" the Moriarty + co fam are and it's just... really unimpressive because the characters just aren't drawn well or by and large ... interesting to look at; Vanitas no Carte, Hakuouki, or Bungo Stray Dogs this is very much not). The music is by and large the same as the series, with nothing to stand out.

Of the two, the first episode is definitely the more enjoyable, and worth checking out, particularly if you want more Sherlock & William, or want to see an anime set in Bath, England. The second is nice if you really wanted to see the tea party manga chapter animated. Neither story is particularly good, but the second episode is infinitely worse, and at least the first is kind of cutely shippy. This isn't to be mean to fluff (I like a good fluff story) but the second episode seems to focus more on the fact that the audience should recognize and like the tropes being used already, so they'll like the episode, rather than writing a good story with the tropes or using the cast well. It's particularly unfortunate because a lot of the tropes rely on attractive character designs, which this series almost uniformly fails at producing. But if you find most of the cast attractive, maybe that'll be your favorite episode. It's otherwise overly corny and boring in a way that I found unenjoyable.
