The thing that sets Kuroshitsuji apart from a lot of other shows, especially the over-hyped shounen anime that most people (myself included) have gotten used to, is just how damn dark it is. It’s a show where evil triumphs… and that’s a good thing. It’s a show that isn’t afraid to kill off characters. And just when you start thinking that maybe Sebastian, for all his demonic powers, isn’t such a bad guy, his utter apathy for the death that unfolds around him shocks the viewer back into the realization that the hero of the show is just plain evil. In fact, it seems that

This fujoshibait anime was super popular when it first aired, by ticking all the right notes. Cute boy, sexy butler, dark atmosphere, and some mystery in the background. I will admit that Sebastian is the coolest anime butler of all times. I mean, what other candidates were there? That irritating indecisive harem shit archetype one from Hayate no Gotoku, or maybe those trash from Ladies versus Butlers? No sir, the competition was low to begin with and dear Sebastian wins while still making breakfast for his master. As a character, I found him to be the tuxedo wearing offspring of Alucard from Hellsing and Enma

Kuroshitsuji is an awesome anime. It is filled with darkness, and even a bit of humor. It is very good for people wanting a thick plot that leaves you with answers and wanting to figure everything out. Thankfully, there will be a second season coming out to (hopefully) explain everything.
STORY: 9 All right. Kuroshitsuji had a strong plot. It was full of twists and surprises. It started pretty light at first, but it kept getting darker and darker. If you're looking for something like Hayate no Gotoku, then DEFINITELY stay away from this. Ciel Phantomhive is a spoiled kid who has a demon butler. Simple, right? ... Feb 14, 2010
I wrote this review on my blog for the anime and manga, and i figured I'd post here:
At first this series annoyed me to hell. Not because I'd read it, mind you. But because every time I'm go to check for some freaking updates there would be Kuroshitsuji at the top of the list, taunting me and singing "na-na-na-na you don't read me!". The obvious solution would be to read it but I was stubborn and the title looked like a shounen which i was not in the mood for. Finally I gave in and clicked the link on onemanga, which gave me the most misleading ... Jan 17, 2021
Taking a break from my usual BL/GL binge habits to review some borderline BL content. Which this show definitely qualifies as, to my unending disgust. Now, some background information on Black Butler. The manga is not, and never was, intended to be a yaoi. I don't know where this rumor started, but it needs to die. The BL elements in this series can be laid squarely at the feet of this adaptation, with no input from the original mangaka.
Now, it's no secret that Kuro season 1 was adapted from maybe four chapters of manga initially. This has... interesting knock on effects on characterization, but more ... Jul 18, 2014
Where to begin with such an interesting, heart-wrenching, emotional, hilarious, and macabre anime such as this?
Well, not on any plane that Kuroshitsuji stands on. Those descriptions are saved for other anime that actually live up to those qualities. A while ago, I heard about Kuroshitsuji, A.K.A. Black Butler, kicking up a storm for most of the younger viewers in the anime audience. This does not include the entirety of the audience, just a large portion of it. I became interested in it, seeing as how somewhat lurid, supernatural animes are very interesting when done correctly. Before investigating further upon the animation, I read a few ... May 15, 2013
Kuroshitsuji was written by Toboso Yana, published by Square-Enix and had an anime adaptation from A-1 Pictures, a studio that I have never watched an anime from. So, let's take a look at the series and get a vague idea of what the studio is made of.
The story is pretty simple. A boy named Ciel Phantomhive, the orphaned son of a wealthy family, is on a quest to get revenge on his parents' killers while making his business a success. Naturally, he sets up a cave hideout and puts on a garish costume after training his mind and body extensively... Wait, that's a different ... Jun 14, 2011
I will start by saying that I have mixed feelings about this anime.
I read the manga beforehand, which means that I already had my ideas about the characters and knew how the story would develop. It also means that I am biased. If you don't care about the manga you might consider reading a review written by someone who has seen the anime first (or only that), it will probably be less biased. The strong points of Kuroshitsuji are the characters and the story. Add to this good animation, great seiyuu and beautiful music and you get this anime. All in all I recommend it, especially ... I can understand why this series is so popular.
I actually really enjoyed watching this because it was whimsical and had it's dark moments as well. However, the reason why I rated it as an overall six is because the story fell apart last minute and just didn't make much sense. So - Story 5/10. The story had so. much. bloody. potential. I wanted to rate it higher, but like I said, it sort of fell apart at the end. What was happening just wasn't making sense and this series would have benefited from a little more attention to filling in plot holes. Or at least, ... Feb 12, 2011
I think there should be a warning in the description of this anime: the main theme here is males crossdressing as females. You'd think they could do more with the story, a demon butler, but instead they use every chance to show the male characters wearing dresses.
I've seen over 60 series and this will be the first I wont be able to watch all the way through. And I've written this, my first review, so that others may be warned. Crossdressing/homosexual males have been used in limited ways in other series for comedy, but this is the first mainstream anime ... Jun 14, 2015
I was debating on whether or not I would even venture into writing a review for this show. To get the general facts out of the way: this was one of the first animes I ever tried watching and the first anime I actually ended up dropping. I guess I gave in to the immense hype surrounding Black Butler and was ultimately disappointed by it. I would like to think I'm not alone.
Story- 6 Where do I begin? This story had so much potential. I loved the idea of a demon butler who caters to his master's every whim, I guess. As well as the writer's ... Nov 25, 2015
When I first watched Black Butler, I was like 10/10 AMAZING OHHHH but then i went back and rewatched some episodes and I was like damn... it's not as good as it seems.
I mean, I loved watching Kuroshitsuji. It is definitely not the worst anime I've seen, (the worst anime I've seen is Diabolik Lovers, BARFS, i refuse to even put that on my list, that's how bad it is), however there are some big flaws that need to be pointed out. Before I get to that, I'll give you the main idea of the anime. STORY Our setting is Victorian Europe. So there's this kid named Ciel Phantomhive, ... Apr 24, 2010
O-M-G…. starting this I never ever expected that I was about to watch my most favorite anime of all times! Where to even begin reviewing this show? Prepare yourselves for a LONG review, it can’t be helped!
I don’t know what made me fall so utterly and madly in love with it. It might have been the Victorian-era London scenery, the gloomy, melancholic, weeping like atmosphere that prevailed. The eerie, mystifying, wicked characters, the extremely and utterly beautiful musical score, the exquisite art. What I know is that it was love at first sight. Story: (10/10) In a nutshell the story is about a young boy who suddenly ... May 22, 2009
Amazingly this is probably one of my favorite anime of all time. The characters, artwork and music all draw you in and you find yourself captivated by what each character is hiding and what will happen next.
I would have given a perfect 10 across the board, but there were some parts at the end that would have been better explained in more detail. Not to say the ending wasn't good. I think the ends pretty much perfectly for the way the series was laid out, but once you watch it you'll understand what I mean. I think the story should get about a 9.5 ... Feb 10, 2013
Kuroshitsuji, or Black Butler (which is what I'm going to call it for the review) is a great example of why you shouldn't place a pussy in the cutting room floor; because when you do so they're too afraid to cut anything out and you end up with a bunch of unnecessary bullshit. I swear, if Black Butler was half the length and more concise it could actually have earned the amount of praise it gets. However, since it's more lose than a contortionist’s bowel movement and longer than it needs to be, it's a crappy series.
The story revolves around Ciel Phantomhive and his plot ... Nov 8, 2014
My So-Far review of Kuroshitsuji....
Sorry, guys. I wanted to like it- I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE IT. I am a teenage otaku girl. I watch Hetalia (hence the username) , I watch Shounen such as Hunter x Hunter (a masterpiece... highly recommended) , One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist. I have seen Shoujo such as Clannad, Kanon, and Anohana. I have seen horror, such as Elfen Lied and Another. I have seen it all- covered every base, from Yaoi to violent fighting scenes. But this... this was not enjoyable for me. I watched 18 episodes- I couldn't suffer through any more of Ciel's irritating whining, Sebastian's gary-stu perfection, the workers' ... Feb 4, 2015
While Kuroshitsuji isn't the best anime I've ever seen, it's one of my favorites. It's not quite the anime that's so bad, it's good...but...it's good in it's strange little way. To put it simply, it was one hell of an anime.
Kuroshitsuji centers around Ciel Phantomhive, who has made a contract with a *cough* sexy *cough* demon named Sebastian who becomes his butler. That's putting it in simple terms. I liked the art, it was pleasant to look at and the music was enjoyable as well. I loved the characters, but it felt like this anime was taking itself too seriously. This comes off as ridiculous and ... Apr 1, 2015
Sapphire!Note: I have not watched the second season yet. This review is only for the first! *meow*
*clears throat and has a cup of tea* There are types of anime shows with strange creatures/demons and cats, and then there is this one....with strange people. I wonder what the Queen of England or a cat would think of this show. Plot/Setting: Very interesting setting. I've always loved historical stories with a twist. They had the timeline right on with Queen Victoria and the fire. But I have never watched an anime set in Great Britain in the late 19th century. It was rather different and gives ... Dec 5, 2010
I've been cut off from anime for a while. So when a friend of mine suggested to try watching this, I thought, okay! Might be a good transition! And it was; the first few episodes were interesting, and gave the feel of a dark story. By episode 10, I felt sorry for the characters.
Now, I haven't read the manga, so I don't know when or how the anime deviated, but the frivolous story lines were painful to watch. The supportive characters didn't completely get a chance to shine, while the main character Ceil, was a seriously whiny crutch to the supposedly awesome Sebastian. The animation ... Nov 6, 2009
When this series first aired on Japanese TV, I was not intrested in it. I kept seeing images of the main charachter Sebastian and thought he was a rip of Mukuro Rokudo of Katekyo Hitman Reborn, so I dicided to sit down and see if the show was worth all the hollabo. I became hooked and this is a anime higly ranked in my book. When I went to anime club, I recamended this show to all the girls. I cant wait for season 2. 24 episodes dosent seem enough for this awsome anime.
