Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru

High school student Wakana Gojou spends his days perfecting the art of making hina dolls, hoping to eventually reach his grandfather's level of expertise. While his fellow teenagers busy themselves with pop culture, Gojou finds bliss in sewing clothes for his dolls. Nonetheless, he goes to great lengths to keep his unique hobby a secret, as he believes that he would be ridiculed were it revealed.

Enter Marin Kitagawa, an extraordinarily pretty girl whose confidence and poise are in stark contrast to Gojou's meekness. It would defy common sense for the friendless Gojou to mix with the likes of Kitagawa, who is always surrounded by her peers. However, the unimaginable happens when Kitagawa discovers Gojou's prowess with a sewing machine and brightly confesses to him about her own hobby: cosplay. Because her sewing skills are pitiable, she decides to enlist his help.

As Gojou and Kitagawa work together on one cosplay outfit after another, they cannot help but grow close—even though their lives are worlds apart.

Gojo and Marin are a great pair. Gojo’s reserved and self-doubting, while Marin is confident and encouraging. Their chemistry is wholesome and often hilarious. Marin especially shines—not just as a genki girl trope, but as someone genuinely kind, driven, and inspiring.

CloverWorks really went all-in with the animation. The character designs are expressive, Marin’s cosplay outfits are detailed, and certain scenes (you know which ones) are incredibly polished. It's colorful, clean, and surprisingly high effort for a romance anime.

Mixed Feelings

I have so much good to say about Dress Up Darling, but unfortunately one bad glaring problem that I'm afraid may turn some viewers off of the show entirely.

To start with the good, the characterization of our main girl Marin has got to be one of my personal favorites. She's bright, passionate, funny, and just plain adorable. Gojo is also a great main guy and his personality meshes so well with Marin's. I love how his and Marin's relationship grows over the course of the season and it makes me so excited to see more of them with Season 2 coming out soon. ... I also love the art style of the show as well as the fluidity in the animation in certain scenes. I love the detail they add to the shows/fandoms within the show and I love the information they share about cosplay, I felt like I actually learned something while I was watching. Gojo and Marin are adorable together and I definitely feel myself rooting for the two. Overall, I love this show and after finishing it's become one of my personal favorites.

However, the biggest and most glaring issue with the show is the fanservice. Now, as an anime fan, I've come to expect at least some fanservice in the shows I watch. In Dress Up Darling, however, some of the fanservice scenes were a bit hard to swallow. A quick example and without delving into spoiler territory, there were some fanservice moments with a character that is a middle schooler that had me turning away from the screen and cringing. The fanservice can be unnecessary and a bit much, which I could totally understand some people being unable to get over or enjoy the show.

If you feel like you can muster through it like I did, I would absolutely recommend this show to any romance, otaku, or slice of life anime lover. Minus the occasional excessive fanservice, this show is nearly perfect.

With an fun and engaging story I found my self loving every character, from how sweet the 2 new girl's sister dynamic is, to how socially awkward the main guy is and how his love for his craft comes into jokes or the plot in such a cute way.

My issue with it, the main girl, she is the most cookie-cutter blond stereotype American girl. it's like they took every single popular blond that sits at the cool table from mid 2010's and pushed her into the mess that she is, listening to how she talks and how she acts was ear piercing, she was so ... odd and out of place vs all the other characters, I know there's people like her that exist, but I would rather eat a barrel of dung covered lollipops than have the pleasure of sharing a conversation with her, her being "pretty" feels like the only selling point.
