Liar Liar. Ah, yet another strategic ploy often employed in the realm of anime, where the protagonist dances through battles with the grace of a master tactician, seemingly possessing an unerring knack for victory. Even in their apparent defeats, these setbacks merely serve as threads in a meticulously woven tapestry leading to ultimate triumph.

The overarching concept, a school steeped in battles fought for stars and dominance in strategic games, lacks the luster of novelty. Regrettably, each character within this narrative feels like an echo—a recycled replica of personalities we've encountered in past anime sagas.

For those freshly venturing into the realm of anime, thirsting for the ... thrill of school-based clashes and a savant-like protagonist who perennially emerges victorious while slowly amassing a harem, this tale might offer a fleeting fascination.

However, for seasoned enthusiasts who have traversed the anime landscape for years, this series becomes a familiar tune—a symphony orchestrated from well-worn notes, threading through anticipated character tropes and predictable plotlines. As a result, it rests comfortably at a modest "6" on the anime scale, lacking the transformative essence or resonant spark that beckons for a return watch. There's a sense of adequacy but nothing groundbreaking or memorable enough to warrant revisiting this tale.

Welcome to the world of No Game no Kakegurui, and if that sounds something similar to a resurrected Frankenstein monster, it surely is not far from the case. Like it or not Liar, Liar is stuck between these two.

Plot: Set in an academy where games decide everything and anything, what if suddenly you got the superpower to cheat. That in a nutshell is the Anime. How that happens, what leads to that is essentially the first ten minutes of the Anime. And whatever follows can also be summarised within that first ten minutes.

Characters: By now you can probably tell what the characters will be ... from merely the poster of the Anime. You'd have the Tsundere with red hair, Kuudere Albino, Dark haired Teacher, and a flock of one note eccentrics who are either looking to take down or down to take a look.

Animation: As you'd expect from an average Ecchi-Harem series, average animation quality with shiny and glossy colours is the order of the day.

Music: A generic lump of background music, along with a generic J-pop opening and ending theme, perfectly suited for the Anime.

Enjoyment: Having said all that, it's been more than a decade now since No Game no Life, and at this point you either lead a life, or you'd take this to lead your life. Whichever way you sway, there is certainly some light enjoyment to be had here, just don't let your expectations cloud you.

Liar Liar is one of the most aggressively mid shows that I've seen so far. If you're easy to please, like me, you'll definitely get enjoyment out of it, but a lot of viewers might have to squeeze the enjoyment out instead... which, why would you do that when you can just watch something good? Once again, I'm very easy to please, so a few of the things I'll say are good might just be average to most people; just keep in mind that this review, like all others, is subjective.

The good:
- The opening bangs, like really hard.
- The visuals are quite good, in my ... opinion! While most people are saying they're mid or bad, I really don't see it. The visual quality is at the very least above-average, and I would say quite great.
- The games they actually play are quite interesting, but that comes with a big asterisk that I'll talk about later.
- The humor is on par most of the time.

The mid:
- Yes, the characters are complete tropes. No, I can't bring myself to dislike them. There's something about these characters that makes me really like most of them so far. Objectively, you've seen all these characters before in other anime you've seen. Nothing truly special here, but most of them aren't horrible, either.
- The worldbuilding is... decent? The setting itself is great. Most things are established well and established quickly, but that has the detriment of huge exposition dumps, especially in the first episode. It's also not really explained why students try to get stars or what that even has to do with their actual studies... that's kind of just handwaved.

The bad:
- Here's that huge asterisk. The anime is contrived as all hell. Most of the time the characters are talking about "skills" you'll just be confused and wondering what random stuff the author pulled out of their ass this time. It's genuinely frustrating a lot of times. This extends to the rules of the games, where there'll be something that's not explained until just the right time for Mr. Protagonist to pull some BS and win.
- The protagonist is in this weird state of being both completely incompetent and weirdly smart at times. The initial twist where you find out that the protagonist isn't actually what he's saying he is is totally fine, but sets the show up for disappointment because you know that he is not going to lose any games. If you want a protagonist that's just your average Joe that's been thrust into this situation, they need to lose sometimes too. There needs to be a struggle, because the fact that he just seems to effortlessly win every game because of... hacking, I guess? feels like a huge contrivance and contradictory to what they're saying he is. Maybe this will be explained later.

Overall, if you like good visuals and just want something to occupy your time without worrying too much about overall quality, it's doubtful you'll go wrong with this anime, but there's really a lot of better stuff to occupy your time with if you value that kind of thing. That being said, I can't bring myself to rate this lower than a 5, because I genuinely enjoyed most of it. This anime certainly gets worse the more you go on, so consider dropping as soon as your frustration hits its peak.

Mom: We have No Game No Life Season 2 at home.

Liar Liar was a frustrating watch for me.I really wanted to love it, and I will still give the Light Novels a shot, but the anime just never really got going for me. On one hand, it does have an interesting Kakegurui-eque school setting where disputes are settled through games in which cheating is allowed, hot waifus and a somewhat intriguing story. But, it ultimately falls flat due to poor animation and pacing.

In a series where strategy games are important, it’s kind of ... important that the audience knows what the hell the rules are of the game and how they work. Liar Liar got this right sometimes, but other times I was totally lost and had no idea what was happening on screen. I mean some of the battles I basically just had to turn my brain off and go with the flow because of how they rushed into a game or the constant reverse uno style twists. It’s not impossible to adapt complex games into anime. Kakegurui does it, Tomodachi game does it, No Game No Life of course did it, but it requires taking your time. I felt this show was so rushed at certain points and it really suffered as a result.

That said, when the pacing was good, it was really good. The final multi school event was well done and easy to follow along with and if they had kept that pacing throughout, I think the show would have been much better received.

The fact that the MC gets ahead through cheating is something that made the series a little unique for me. Usually in these types of game anime, the MC is a genius and can outsmart everyone like the aforementioned shows. It’s not often you get an anime where cheating is not just allowed, but encouraged. Yea, Kakegurui has that, but Yumeko doesn’t exactly like doing that.Her natural talent gets her through gambling. Whereas the MC here is a literal fraud and only gets things done because of the help he has. It’s dirty and underhanded, but pretty fun to watch. Seeing how creative they got with the cheating was pretty cool, the explanations were a bit lacking, but it was a novel concept for me.


As I said in the opening, the other big draw here for me was the waifus and while the key visual art looks good, that’s probably the best you’ll ever see characters in here looking. The animation is stiff and uninspired most of the time and they nerfed the designs of the girls big time if you compare it to the light novel art. Which is a shame since Shirayuki’s design on light novel volume 1 is a big part of why I got into this series. Furthering my point on the animation, it is really bad. At times it looks more like a powerpoint slide than an anime. The show obviously mainly relies on strategy and non-physical combat, but there’s a few action scenes here and there, particularly in the last few eps that genuinely made me laugh with how bad they are.

I can usually excuse bad art if it’s made up for with a very well paced and developed story, but it’s hard to do that with Liar Liar. Yea, the premise is interesting and there’s some cool moments, but it’s more often than not, a painfully mediocre viewing experience. I say this as someone who really wanted to like the show and owns the LN too. It’s not the worst thing in the world, just not going to knock your socks off either.

Liar Liar gets 6 stars out of 10.

My expectations for this anime were rather moderate.

Although the initial synopsis seemed intriguing, unfortunately, my final impression was less than positive.


The main plot revolves around various games and their complex mechanics, leading to numerous explanations of how they work. Regrettably, these explanations become tedious and, at times, even more challenging to grasp than some concepts from my university studies xdxd


However, the standout feature of this anime is its characters. They are surprisingly well-developed, with solid personalities and coherent character arcs.
Yet, in some instances, the interactions between them may feel forced and convenient.

The most significant drawback of this anime lies in the script's conveniences. The protagonist, on multiple occasions, triumphs in an almost implausible manner and is saved thanks to the sudden appearance of abilities that provide substantial advantages over opponents.


The animation displays a noticeable inconsistency.
While some scenes shine with fluidity and quality, others resemble slides from a PowerPoint presentation. It's perplexing to observe how backgrounds and background characters often appear static, as if they were simple duplicate PNGs xdd


The internal soundtrack is mostly forgettable, with no particular highlights, except for specific tracks.
On the other hand, the external soundtrack is impressive, featuring an incredibly catchy opening and a comforting ending, the aesthetics and background music blend effectively in these aspects.
(The opening easily enters the top 15 of the year's best).


In summary, I don't consider this anime inherently bad, as it presents a solid narrative and an intriguing core plot. However, its execution could have been better.
The anime is entertaining at times and can provide enjoyment if one overlooks the intricacies of the script and the ups and downs in animation quality.
Nevertheless, I wouldn't recommend it to those seeking a deeper and more coherent experience.

Liar liar good anime with a bad beginning

(I believe the bad reviews on this anime is because of its shitty beginning and they gave up watching it when it gets good)

This anime’s first episodes are not good. In the beginning everything the cheating system sucks and the story overall is not to entertaining with generic troupe characters. But I find when it reaches ep 7+ it gets really good. After ep 7 i find that it would start getting really interesting and become a much better anime with its games become far more interesting, how it explains things increases and makes sense, characters become ... enjoyable with an personality, Better manipulation, most of not and all the problems people are complaining about gets fixed. I’m looking forward to upcoming episodes and I believe that it will continue releasing good episodes.


Some notes

- the “cheating” in the anime is absolutely dog shit fr. The anime doesn’t explain the cheating in any way.

Edited some mistakes

This Anime is basically The secret love child of Classroom of The Elite and Tomodachi Game and most certainly, this love child was dropped on its head when it was born

The Anime basically takes place on Academy Island and there is a system with stars that defines your rank but the MC who has the most stars actually has only 1 star but has 7 stars at the same time. The anime is essentially is built of the fact that the MC has a Star that allows him to deceive people and make them think he's some bigshot when he's just a normal person ... and he has to keep this lie a secret obviously

I mean from an Ecchi series, I shouldn't expect much, not much is going on with the side characters as well and art style is decent

For now, The anime is in that zone where it's mid, I like the concept and it has potential to become something greater so I'll keep up with it because it sound's interesting but right now it's just OK at best

Disappointingly mediocre is probably the best way to sum up this anime. Borrowing on the CoTE high-school competition formula this aims to be a little less serious and a bit more.. 'colourful'? Truth be told that's probably the best that can be said. Overall it doesn't do anything inherently wrong.. it's all just so average that after the end of 12 episodes it feels very 'meh'.

The plot involves our mc typically battling through various confrontations to an underlying story (and motivation) that only briefly comes up a couple of times almost as though an afterthought. The characters whilst delivering on their roles don't really have ... any depth beyond their basic cliches. The dialogue is uninspiring and sequencing just plain poorly executed. Even the couple of token ecchi elements are somewhat just shoe-horned in a couple of odd places to no real effect.

The one solid positive is the great OP tune and whilst the music is reasonable, the sound effects are awfully flat and beyond not bringing any impact actually feel quite out-of-place in a many parts. It almost feels like the production team had their checklist of success-criteria and pushed out an anime that albeit cohesively put together, just didn't have any real passion for it.

It's a interesting enough story but one devoid of character beyond it's fair art and where and effort is actually made some decent animation. Overall, the static "cardboard cut-out mobs" used here are a good analogy for the anime. Colourful and but ultimately lifeless and uninteresting.

So.. the anime teaches us that Lying = good? Not really, however, if that lie doesn't affect others and it helps you achieve your goals and basically your life depends on it, well...

I'm gonna say this from the beginning, this anime is not something special, not something revolutionary nor unique, it's a pretty average series with a fine art style. But does this mean it's bad? Not necessarily, it does have some interesting characters and some bland ones but i would say ... it's bearable.

The story did not really progressed that much in these 12 episodes, somehow I'm fine with it, rushing series, even if 12 episodes it's bad(Although in some aspects the anime rushed way too fast, like the development of romantic feelings for certain characters). So our Hiroto is searching for a childhood friend, the whole point of him being on that Island is to search for that certain friend, but sadly in a whole season this topic is not touched almost at all nor he does any progress into actually searching, this pretty much gives me Classroom of the Elite vibes, playing mind games, manipulating, lying. Liar-Liar tries to combine all of these but sadly doesn't really succeed, many times the logic used for certain games doesn't make any sense, just made up things, like totally fantasy.

I would recommend this anime to people that are bored on a Saturday night and you don't really want to watch nothing psychological that requires you to squeeze your brain out , just you know, relax and enjoy, if you expect some awesome story and character development, etc, etc, i suggest you to not watch then, as i said above, Liar-Liar is pretty average, doesn't really stands out with nothing special besides the "waifus" that are not that many anyway.

So overall i give this anime a 7/10 that's more of a stretched out subjective score, because if i had to rate it objectively, i would say at best a 6/10 but if we ever get a season 2, it does have some potential.

I've seen plenty of anime in which someone challenges another to a game in order to gain status, or points from another. To name a few. Baka and Test, Classroom of the Elite, Kakegurui, even the good old Yu-Gi-Oh. And I usually like them all. However, I feel this one was poorly done.

It started out good. You got new student who becomes top of the class by obtaining the liar star, by accidentally beating the best girl on the island in a game he had no idea how to play. Then has to lie about being the best to keep her secret, while also ... getting an advantage to figure out his own reason for why he went to the island. The art style was great. I really like how the characters look. Even the music was alright.

Where it fell for me was as the story progressed they introduced new games, which normally isn't an issue, but I felt they were explained poorly. I legit had no idea how to the last two games were played, but I think I understood a few of the other ones as the story went on. Though I also feel after they explained some of the rules in some of those games. They're just completely ignored as the game plays out. And then you have these abilities which there are a wide variety of them. Pretty much you can use them to win a game, as long as you prepare those abilities in advance, almost like making a small unique deck in a TCG. Throughout those games the Heart of the cards guided him to victory at times. Heart of the cards being hackers that messes with the programing of the game giving our MC an advantage in things, and just claims it as his abilities. It wouldn't be called Liar Liar if he only had one lie lol. Overall: Yes there are better game centered anime out there, but I think it still has potential, possibly. If they make a S2 I think the rules gotta be more understanding, and followed more

The show is kinda fun to watch but it's so confusing at some points that it can ruin the experience for some people, imagine a No Game No Life but generic and with less soul.

The premise is nothing new and the way they handle it makes it worse, every episode is packed with a lot of expository dialogues, specially when they have to explain their dumb plans to beat the dumb games.

The characters have the same depth as a McChicken, and zero development at all, at least the character design is great.

The explanation for most games is done so quickly that you ... can't understand a thing, and even if you understood at the beginning you cease to understand once they start revealing random deus x machina shit to get out of situations.

The animation is generic, not bad nor good, just works. The sound track do as well as the animation, there's no memorable one, they are just there.

Liar, Liar is the kinda show you turn off your brain and just watch to have some fun but if you have any critical sense you'll probably have a bad time with it.

The only thing this anime has going for it is the opening music, which is where all 5 of my stars go. I slept through the anime itself cuz it was just so cliche and boring. While the concept is somewhat unique in anime, its basically classroom of the elite but on a $10 budget where the protagonist has wall hacks, aim bot and 900 layers of plot armour.. and a harem.

I suppose just to add some extra words and in hopes of not spoiling it, I would like to add that the animation itself is not crazy, if anything its a bit poor imo. ... However, the artwork is pretty decent. And if you like anime girls, this may be a good one for you.. personally, I only watched it cuz the protagonist is OP as heck and I thought i'd be getting classroom of the elite or no game no life genius protagonist vibes but eh people have their preferences. Ok I hope I yapped enough to be able to post this review. But yeah if you have time to kill, then I guess 12 episodes wouldn't hurt. It's only like 4 hours total watch time which is like 2 full length movies so yeah. Your time, your choice I suppose. Have a good one to whoever actually reads this :)

The concept reminds me of other animes where the protagonist is quite smart, although here he is not very smart. The protagonist could have more personality and leadership, although as is usual in these animes the protagonist is a shit.

I like the development of games and puzzles and I think they are well done.
The waifus are spectacular, one would expect nothing less.

I would like a second season of the anime where we see how the protagonist gets the remaining stars of different colors that he has left to earn, as well as the appearance of new characters, friends and enemies.

Lair Lair introduces itself with promise, a tale that combines the realms of gaming duels and school life into a potentially intriguing concept. Animation-wise, it starts off well, with decent visuals and skill effects that catch the eye. However, the quality begins to decline significantly after the first few episodes, with poor-quality drawings and a noticeable drop in art and animation quality, particularly in the action scenes towards the later part of the series.

The story displays potential in the beginning but takes a sharp nosedive after following the Noa route, never quite managing to recover its initial promise. The progression maintains a well-balanced pace overall ... but the game duels is unreasonable rushed, leaving viewers confused and wishing for more from the central theme of the anime.

In terms of themes, the concept of game duels intertwined with school life is present, though not as deep or impactful as it could have been, largely due to the anime's shortcomings in execution. Characters fare somewhat better, with the two girls in the story featuring well-designed traits and supporting characters adding some depth. However, the main heroine's inconsistency can be jarring, as he oscillates between portraying strength and weakness without any apparent consequence.

The soundtrack, including both the opening and ending themes, manages to impress with its quality, and the background music effectively enhances the anime's scenes.

The overall enjoyment factor of Lair Lair remains somewhat intact, it's marred by numerous flaws in various aspects. The anime still offers moments of entertainment, but it's hard not to think about the untapped potential that could have elevated it beyond its average status. In the end, it's a watchable series, but it unfortunately has too many flaws.

"LIAR LIAR"

Genre- School, Suspense, Game.

In the hopes of finding that one person, Shinohara joins the 'Academy Island' where everything from money, respect, authority, etc. are waged in the form of games. With an infinite number of games, every student has the power to challenge others no matter their rank or class.

Academy Island has the concept of 'seven stars' which means the person holding the highest amount of stars is deemed as the most powerful. And the higher your stars count goes, the higher your chances of being a target for everyone else in the academy. The anime revolves around a lie that our MC must ... keep up from being expelled from the school. It has a setting similar to "No Game No Life" and "Kakegurui" where our MC must play a game to prove he is the strongest and win each and every battle to keep up the act of being the fastest ever seven-star. While the games are fun and enticing, the anime seriously lacks character chemistry. With just a little bit of thought on each character's involvement with others, the anime could've made them a little more wholesome and complete.

Also, the anime incorporates side characters that don't mean much to the show, so eliminating them will be a better idea to focus more on the MC's story rather than focusing its time on their build. Coming to its production, the anime has a really subtle/ budgeted animation, so it would be a good idea to up that a bit in case there was ever going to be a second season for it.

This anime is recommended for every "GAME" anime lover.
