After leaving her idol career behind, Fuuka Miyazawa finds herself on a spontaneous flight to Okinawa instead of returning home to her pity party in Morioka. Bearing a heavy heart and nowhere to go, she aimlessly wanders around the area until she stumbles upon Gama Gama Aquarium—an aging aquarium on the verge of closing down.

With a lack of visitors and costly but necessary repairs needed to keep its doors open, the director is faced with shutting down the establishment for good by the end of the summer. The director's aquatic life-loving granddaughter—Kukuru Misakino—cannot stand the thought of the aquarium closing and is determined to make enough money by the end of the season to keep the doors open.

Seeing the unique magic of the aquarium, Fuuka begs Kukuru for a job; however, she soon finds that her lack of experience makes her more of a hindrance than anything else. At the same time, Kukuru realizes that her ambitious goal might be more than she can handle. With mounting pressure from all around them, will Kukuru and Fuuka be able to save the one place they hold close to their hearts?

Let me preface this review by saying that if you're expecting some ingenious plot from this show, you're going to be left severely disappointed.

From the studio that made Angel Beats!, Charlotte, Another & Maquia, this is Shiroi Suna no Aquatope.

Story: 6/10

The plot is pretty straightforward. There's no real *excitement* or *twists* that leave you wanting more. It epitomises what we call "slice-of-life". One might call it tedious and generally lacklustre. That said, it's not bad. It's just there.

Art: 8.5/10

Aquatope is one pretty show. The opening scene is gorgeous. Its style (in my opinion) is somewhat reminiscent of Wonder Egg Priority. Colours are vivid read more

I usually don't watch slice of life animes like this one, I'm more to action if I'll be honest. But the trailer absolutely captivated me, and soon I found myself absolutely loving this series.

Story: 8.3/10. Your typical slice of life, except it's centered around an aquarium and people wanting to save it. The concept is something you see often, especially with the word 'save.' But i've never heard of saving an aquarium before, so it does sound a lot more personal. I'm hoping that we get to delve really deeply into the mian character's feelings and backstories. Rn on ep 6 they showed us a read more

The Aquatope on White Sand is the perfect summer anime, bringing us into a small aquarium with a lot of heart and some magic.

Story: After giving up her opportunity to be an idol, Fuuka Miyazawa travels alone and comes across Gama Gama, a small aquarium that will close by the end of the summer. She helps the acting director, Kukuru Misakino, to try to keep the aquarium open. 8/10

Art: The animation is gorgeous. Water tends to be animated beautifully—Free and Re-Main are some examples—and The Aquatope on White Sand takes it even further with a fantastical underwater world that some aquarium visitors encounter. Bonus points read more

Even if you don't plan to watch a slice-of-life anime. I highly recommend you just watching the first episode, it is the most impressive episode as it should be, and can be watched alone just for the sheer amount of quality.
Ironically, I'm going to spoil the first episode now. So you might as well watch it now.
Story starts with Fuuka, a young girl who just quitted her career as an idol, mostly because she isn't fit for it. At first, the atmosphere was quite light, after quitting, Fuuka decided to go on a journey to Okinawa, maybe to lighten the mood, maybe to avoid read more
